Hello, Enterprisey. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

A&M redirects

Hello, Enterprisey. I'm writing to you because your bot is removing "redirect" assessement from WikiProject Anime and Manga articles (ex. 1, 2, 3). I'm not sure why it does this task, neither do I know how this is useful (it's really a doubt, not a critic). However, it's causing a problem: it's overpopulating the category Unassessed anime and manga articles, in which should be included only the new articles that were not assessed yet. Oops, sorry about that! When this bot task was going through the approval process, nobody really considered wikiprojects that weren't using the WPBannerMeta template. Looking at your project's talk page, it looks like the WP:A&M banner isn't going to be converted anytime soon. I think preventing the bot from removing the assessment when it notices that the banner is that of your project would work, so I'm going to make that change to the bot's code now. I'll also prepare a list of pages that were already affected in this way to see if we need a bot task to undo the edits. Enterprisey (talk!) 05:14, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

I am sorry to bother you again, but there is something I wanted to ask you, as you are the article's reviewer. I should be bold, but how would you feel about a section dedicated to new features in the individual Office XP applications (e.g., Outlook 2002) (similar to this)? I do not intend to list every feature, of course, but I feel that such information would be immensely valuable. draft-sorter.js and grade parameter

I've noticed that your draft-sorter.js script adds a 'grade' parameter whenever it adds any WikiProject banner. As far as I'm aware, 'grade' isn't a supported parameter for most WikiProject templates, and so it results in pages being added to cleanup categories (e.g. Category:Africa articles with invalid parameters). Hi Enterprisey, could you please make your bot check whether a user exists before making a talk page for them? Based on Template:Did you know nominations/2018 Gulf of Alaska Earthquake (check the history), it created User talk:Multiple, no one editor seems primarily responsible for the article as it now exist (now deleted). Well, I got bombed in my first RfA, and I too had an alternative account that I did not connect to my main account, till just before my second RfA. So at least we both have got that in common :D

Since your first RfA, the feedback I have from the community is that you've contributed to build Wikipedia in unique ways, which editors really appreciate. If there's someone who has already passed Kudpung's criteria, I would really want to know why aren't you considering running again, now that much time has passed since the earlier RfA. Thank you so much for your support! I would normally be interested in running again, but my current RL workload is incredibly high to the point where I can't do much else at the moment. If I had a week to spare, I absolutely would give it another try (after consulting a bunch of people, of course!) since it has been nearly two and a half years. ACTRIAL - next steps for the Future of AfC & NPP

Hello Enterprisey, thank you for your efforts reviewing New Page and AfC submissions and your support for the ACTRIAL initiative.

The conclusion to the ACTRIAL report commissioned by the Wikimedia Foundation strongly reiterates our long-time on going requirements for the NPP and AfC processes to be improved. Within minutes of the trial being switched off, the feed was swamped with inappropriate creations and users are being blocked already.
This is now the moment to continue to collaborate with the WMF and their developers to bring the entire Curation system up to date by making a firm commitment to addressing the list of requirements to the excellent suite of tools the WMF developed for Curation. Some of these are already listed at Phabricator but may need a boost.
The conclusions also make some recommendations for AfC.

Bot Error

I've just noticed that your bot seems to be making an error when notifying users of articles at DYK. If the nomination template's parameter (Template:Did you know nominations/[article title here]) is not an actual article title (e.g., Template:Did you know nominations/Marlon Bundo books), the bot sends a link to an invalid article title (e.g., Marlon Bundo books). sql as a programming language

if sql in general is a programming language (and I agree that it is) then it should be given the treatment all the others are. You have c, c++ etc all listed separately. Conversation on improvements to AfC process

Hi Enterprisey -- I'm Marshall Miller; I'm a new product manager at WMF with the Community Tech team. I'm currently working on a potential improvement to the Articles for Creation (AfC) process that I posted about here, and that's being discussed on the talk page.

I don't know if you've had a chance to check out that conversation, but I wanted to get in touch since a lot of the conversation has been around the tools that you've worked on for AfC. The discussion so far has narrowed down to a few leading improvements, and the work that the Community Tech team at WMF would do to pursue those improvements could likely involve enhancements to the AFCH script, or work that builds on things like the Pending AfC Submissions tool.

If you have time to weigh in on the conversation, or for us at the Community Tech team here to ask you questions about your work -- or if you want to collaborate on some of these improvements, please let me know! We would appreciate any bandwidth you can spare.

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

Delsort with Cricket

Hello there! I have been using the delsort script but have been noticing whenever I choose "Cricket", the AfDs aren't actually going to the collection page. – TheGridExe (talk) 18:34, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Gadget-afchelper.js loading user JS

Hi there! I noticed MediaWiki:Gadget-afchelper.js sources User:Enterprisey/afch-master.js. This poses a security risk, since (while probably unlikely) your account could be compromised and someone could insert malicious code in your user script which affects everyone who uses Wikipedia. I noticed you're a sysop on testwiki, do you have two-factor authentication turned on? Doing so there will also mean you have 2FA here. Even if you do have it turned on, under principle it would be good to move the AFCH script to the MediaWiki namespace. As it is in the notability guideline, although technically a list is a type of article, probably "list" is "differentiated" from "article", otherwise, why mention "list" and "article"? Remove deletion from catagories

I looked into this and Fashion is also listed twice in the main list of delsort pages by topic (WP:DST). The list in the script should probably be kept the same way. I believe the reasoning of the original tool authors was that a merge is an indication that the content is unsuitable as a standalone article, but a keep is an indication that the content should largely remain at its current location. XTools edit counter

Hey there, I saw your comments about XTools on IRC. So you know, you can get just the namespace totals with XTools (example). This is still imposed by 350,000 edit count limitation, though. The issue obviously is users with a really high edit count can slow down the tool tremendously, for everyone else who uses it -- if not fail completely. The same is true for any tool with long-running queries. We have a few tasks to mitigate this, namely phab:T188677 and phab:T182182. I hope to get to them soon. I do have an older tool that just does the namespace counts, with no edit count limitation: toolforge:musikanimal/namespace_counter. It will run on Oshwah [2], but be prepared to wait ;)

Finally, I wanted to remind you XTools is open source. If you are interested, we'd absolutely love to have more contributors, even if it's just technical suggestions for improvements. Docs on how to contribute are at xtools.readthedocs.io. Cheers — MusikAnimal ^talk 13:57, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

You should learn PHP! Not just so you can work on XTools, but because you are a talented developer and Wikimedia projects are predominantly PHP-based. I didn't know one lick of PHP two years ago, and somehow I've grown to love it. Learning it opened up the door to work on MediaWiki itself.

Back to the edit counter -- if you do decide to build your own, you will run into the same issues all the other tools have. Perhaps you're already aware of this, but namely, you have a hard limit of five database connections. So if five people are running the edit counter at the same time, the sixth person will be greeted with a "exceeded max connection limit" error. For this reason it's important to set some sane limits. You can do away with an edit count limit (a bad solution, admittedly), and instead set a max statement time so that queries gone wild are automatically killed. Failure to do this is why the old XTools and Supercount suffered from so much downtime. If you need more help in this area, feel free to ask. Block afch on WP:AFC/R via gadget instead?

Is there a good reason for this instead of editing the gadget itself to include:

cnbc.com: isn't primarily about Pointy, doesn't contribute to significant coverage
forbes.com: quite good actually, I don't know how I missed it during the search; if we had another source of this quality I'd probably keep the article, to be honest.
sfgate.com: doesn't seem to mention Pointy that much, unless I missed something
youtube.com: YouTube cannot be used as a reliable source
irishtimes.com: also quite good, bit of a PR piece though (IS concerns)
businesspost.ie: paywalled, can't comment on how good it is, although I suspect I would have the same notes as for the irishtimes.com article

Delsort no longer visible on AfD pages

Hello Enterprisey, I use the delsort tool for occasional AfD discussions (in User:GermanJoe/vector.js). Usually the tool is shown in the "More" tab on top together with other installed tools such as rater, redirect highlighting and dash fixing. But now it's no longer showing (all other tools are still visible, I use Firefox 52.9.0). Maybe it's just some kind of loader issue or my clumsy call definition (I am not really experienced with more complex details of Wiki-functionality, and am just copypasting the installation instructions usually). I have other tools also installed at User:GermanJoe/common.js (just fyi). If you got some time, would you mind taking a quick look at the function call and possible issues please? GermanJoe, I located the problem. Your vector.js contains a call to mw.util.addPortletLink that isn't wrapped in the proper call, which means that all of the lines below it (including the line that imports the delsort script) won't run. You should copy the code at User:Enterprisey/vector.js (which is just the code at your vector.js with one modification - i.e. wrapping the addPortletLink call) to your vector.js, which should fix the issue. Sphilbrick, sure - once you install the script, navigate to any talk page or Wikipedia-space page with discussions, and after each signature you should see a new (reply) link. Thanks for the explanation. While it doesn't help me with the task that I'm working on, I wonder if it has the potential of addressing a feature I think is missing and have asked for but haven't seen it built yet.

When I respond to someone, I'd like to include a ping if I'm not on that person's talk page as you just did. The problem is, I have to manually add a template, then go up to the previous reply and look carefully to make sure I get the username. In some cases this is straightforward but some people's username is not exactly the same as the text and the signature. I copy and paste that into the template and sometimes mess up. Once I hit publish I may realize I messed up because it's red but then it's too late. Even if I fix it, the ping feature doesn't work unless I add the template and sign in the same step.

My assumption is that your script must be able to detect that there is a signature and presumably could access the username. From that, it ought to be straightforward to have an option in the reply form to start the reply with username. I wouldn't have to search to make sure I get the username exactly correct, it would pick up the username of the message I'm replying to. @Tyw7: It is because your talk page link in your sig is a link to User:Tyw7/t (a redirect to your talk page), rather than a link to User talk:Tyw7. The AfD stat tool looks for the talk page link for !votes (presumably because a lot of people have no user page link in their sig); because of this odd linking, it only seems to count your AfD !votes if you are the nominator. I changed the link in your sig at that AfD and now it shows up in the stat tool. I'd suggest fixing your sig? — Insertcleverphrasehere ^{(or here)} 02:02, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

reply-link

I've only had a quick tinker with this script this morning, but it seems to solve a really obvious requirement. I don't know if you remember the debacle with Liquid Threads and Flow, but I remember reading that and thinking "what we need is to keep it simple, have a nicer user interface but keep the back end exactly the same so there's a backwards compatibility route". I've been around the block with software development enough now to know that if you try to solve a problem by throwing out the old system and replacing it with a new one, you are screwed. Bug in afch-dev.js: Decline reason is posted when rejecting draft

Hi Enterprisey, thanks for maintaining the AFCH script. Currently, there is a minor bug in User:Enterprisey/afch-dev.js that causes the decline reason to be posted when I'm rejecting a draft. Here is a summary of what happens:

The user clicks the "Decline/Reject" button.
The user types in a decline reason.
The user decides to reject the draft, and chooses the "Reject" radio button.
Since the reject reason field is empty, the user types in a reject reason.
The user clicks on the "Decline submission" button.
Both the decline and reject reasons are posted on the draft page.

A couple of changes would improve the user experience:

The decline and reject reason fields should be in sync when the user switches between the "Decline" and "Reject" radio buttons.
When rejecting or declining, only one comment should be posted on the draft page.
The "Decline submission" button should be renamed to "Reject submission" when the "Reject" radio button is selected.

Hello, Ent. I made a toolbar script yesterday that links to Special:RandomInCategory/Category:Pending AfC submissions but I can't seem to change the displayed text. Is there a way to change the text "RSu" to an image, for example - File:Book with Lens Flat Icon Vector.svg? This is the code:

You could probably write a CSS rule to set the background-image to that image, and then set the font-size of the link to zero to hide it. User:Enterprisey/reply-link is SUCH a good idea, the only problem is that the people most in need of it won't have it and will have to learn to reply the hard way (new users and logged out users). Not sure where to put this, so I might as well mention it here: the same idea behind reply-link was apparently implemented on ru.wp back in February of this year: ru:Участник:Jack_who_built_the_house/convenientDiscussions.js. Recently Active Users

Hello Enterprisey. I was recently observing the recently active users log and noticed that the link for myself leads to a blocked sock impersonating me (User:HickoryOughtShirt). This seems to be a similar problem for "Cote d'Azur" (turns to User:Cote d). On the help desk, it was pointed out the tool may have problems with percent-encoding of special characters and links. I am not very familiar in this area and of course this is not an urgent issue, it was just a problem you may want to address. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 20:11, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

An issue with your unblock-review.js script

Hi Enterprisey! I gotta start off by saying: I definitely love your unblock-review.js script a lot! It definitely saves a good few minutes of time messing with the template and it's (mostly) been working just fine. I ran into an issue with it, however, when attempting to respond to an unblock request where the user used {{unblock-un}} to add a username change request alongside their request. If you look at the diff here where I used your script to respond to the request, it overwrote the template with {{unblock}}, which will obviously cause issues there ;-). But I also noticed that your script adds the "decline=" to the first default argument instead of the last one at the end of the template as well. When users copy the instructions to request an unblock and with a username change request, they're told the exact location to put each argument (1=, 2=, etc). I think that this will also add issues and in this exact situation... but now that I think about it while I type this out... that also doesn't make sense... but it does... I'll need to test it. Anyways, thought I'd let you know about this. Thanks again for writing this script! As you can see, I've been editing a lot less recently, partially due to IRL stuff and partially due to this new thing I'm coding; it should make every script that works by inserting new things into wikitext a TON more accurate, and should resolve this particular issue entirely. Script/tool request

Hi Enterprisey

I have used several of your tools and know you have technical wizardry. I have a relatively simply request for a script or wmflabs tool which counts "bad" AfC acceptances. The basic operation is as follows:

Scan the history of Wikipedia:Articles for creation/recent for articles accepted by a user.
Check to see if the articles exist.
Return a percentage of exist/doesn't exist and a list of articles which no longer exist.

If possible:

Also check the articles to see if they are redirects.
Check the move log for the titles to detect if they were moved in to a new title.
Check the move log for articles moved to the draftspace.
Parse the deletion rationales to return the deletion reason and list it with the articles.

It may be possible to use timestamps of acceptance/move/deletion to reduce false positives with old move log entries that are not relevant. And perhaps check the deletion log to detect recreated articles even if there is an article at the title.

Bug in AFCH beta script

Hi! Recently, I declined Draft:Lalon Geeti, according to the edit history, the script should be notifying Neverdie1672018. However, it notified Enamur Syed instead (diff). The user has been renamed on 12 Nov, but the draft was submitted on 5 Nov. Maybe the script notifies the user who submitted the draft without checking if the user has been renamed or not. Have you ever thought of expanding your CopyVio RevDel request script to include all Revision Delete criteria? After all, someone made the template {{Revdel-rd3}}. His user scripts are immensely useful and powerful and include such pillars of the project as the AfC helper script (used by all Articles for Creation reviewers – its current version alone has been used over 41,000 times), the delsort script (which makes sorting AfDs easier, used over 14,000 times, reply-link (a script to make replying to talk page comments easier, used over 1,000 times), and countless more. His labs tools are part of many workflows and include such things as xfd-stats (used to generate statistics about editors' XfD votes) and vote-history (which shows the progression of votes in discussions over time). Unlike many technical editors, though, he's also diligently at work writing articles – among his 14 article creations and 4 DYKs is everything from Convolutional neural network to Gallimathias musicum. AFCH cleanup and CSD tags

I've spent the last day or so going through drafts tagged as G11 without being declined out of the AfC queue and noticed an odd behavior with AFCH's cleanup routine: it forces all of the AfC templates to the top and moves the CSD tag down below into the draft itself. This makes sense for other templates like maintenance tags, but for CSD tags wouldn't it make more sense to move them to the very top above the AfC templates so patrolling admins and reviewers can immediately see what criteria it's been flagged under? Well I was wondering if we could get a option to add a CSD to the vandalism decline reason. However I was looking at it this morning and thought it would be a bit complex as you have vandalism, negative BLP, and attack pages all rolled into one in that decline reason. Hi, the AFC for singer “Glenn Mena” which was created a month ago by me and accepted by you after much delibration at the Kiwi chat and one of the query you specifically stated was the article looks similar to the one previously created and I clarified my position on that, you also gave me guide on how to improve mine with the new sources, I woke up this morning and saw that another editor nominated it for speedy deletion per WP:G4 I thought I should notify you on this. Lantern Entertainment is different from The Weinstein Company

Hi - I posted this on the Lantern Entertainment Talk page and saw you had undid some of the corrections, based on the below conversation was hoping you could assist in making the necessary corrections to the page/create a new Lantern Entertainment page. I haven't heard from user DGG since he agreed to make the split and as you are able to make edits and are a neutral party was hoping you could help.

Disclosing that I am an employee of the company Lantern Entertainment, I am noting that this article is incorrect in saying Lantern Entertainment is the new name for The Weinstein Company. The correct information is that The Weinstein Company has effectively dissolved and sold its assets in a bankruptcy court to Lantern Capital for $289 million. Lantern Entertainment owns those assets, but is an entirely separate company. How can this page be edited to reflect the accurate information?

The Weinstein Company is by far the better known at present, and the principal article should be at that name, and will give the information about the sale of the assets. Suggestions to quick-before

Could you use something like encodeURIComponent(pageName.replace(/_/g, " ")) (or whatever the correct code is) so that a space substitues an underscores in the search string? Cv-revdel idea

Many thanks for cv-revdel! If one has Preferences → Recent changes → Number of edits to show in recent changes, page histories, and in logs set to a high number, Fred Gandt's responsiveHistoryCompare that dynamically moves the Compare selected revisions buttons next to the selected revisions on action=history pages eliminates scrolling up or down to find the button again. A really neat function. Unfortunately, responsiveHistoryCompare and cv-revdel conflict; cv-revdel still works fine, but both its Add range to revdel template buttons are displayed at the end of a history page when responsiveHistoryCompare is loaded. Hi Sam Sailor and Enterprisey. I have added code to my script to move the Add range to revdel template buttons along with the Compare selected revisions. It works after making selections i.e. causes them to follow along, but doesn't affect the erroneous (when conflicted) initial positioning. That can be solved by editing:

Just wanted to put out feelers

for a script for {{2nd chance}}? The current process is that we expect users to follow all the steps listed in that template on their own, which is... not exactly practical for almost all new blockees, to put it charitably. How practical do you think it would be to write a script that handles the technical aspects of that template, added to the common.js of users who have their unblock requests tagged with {{2nd chance}}, triggered by a user typing a pagename into a box on their user talk page? 1989, you mean editing meta:Special:MyPage/global.js, right? If so, that sounds like a pretty good idea. I can list installed scripts over there pretty easily, as well as provide the ability to move scripts to your global.js page. I haven't come up with a good user interface for installing a script directly to a specific target (i.e. something besides your common.js), but when I do, it'll support global.js pages from the beginning. New script suggestion

I saw your RfA. A few years ago, I mooted the possibility of generating something to flag-up non-active users (perhaps over one year); added to that could be an optional last-edit date. The first programmer suggested to me turned out to be blocked, and the second I approached directly I don't think was capable (stated to be an IT worker but may not have been a programmer), but suggested it could be achieved via a Javascript. Is this general suggestion viable? My primary reason was prompted by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Motorcycling, where there are (now) 161 members (I am not a member, and do not intend to be) the majority of whom are inactive, some are blocked, some have never contributed; notionally, at the time, around 20 or so were active at any one time (with the majority never directly interacting), but the member list needs to be examined one entry at a time to ascertain activity. The original suggestion that I picked up on was the large amount of MediaWiki messages being delivered to dormant, un-accessed Talk pages, occupying server space (although the latter seems limit-less). A few years have elapsed, so I am unsure if this has been addressed. No urgency, but thought I'd run it past you for consideration. rgds,--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 02:55, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
