This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

What's happening?

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.

Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

  • Swedish
    Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
    Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
  • Dutch
    Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
  • Polish
    Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.

  • Arabic
    The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

Wikidata citation bot

Hi Lane, a few of us at the Wikimania Open Scholarship wekend have started a project to import citation data into Wikidata. There are a few details on the weekend's etherpad and Mitar has started a github repo if you want to take a look. OTRS medical question

As my go to medical expert, I am fielding an OTRS query, which I cannot answer. See User_talk:Arcadian#Odontoma

but Arcadian seems inactive, and Talk:Odontoma

which seems even less active.

I don't expect you to answer it, but I bet you know where to go next (is there a wikiproject Dentistry, or should it go to the Med experts?--S Philbrick(Talk) 22:24, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Sphilbrick WikiProject Medicine covers a lot of dental topics so I would say send anyone there. The question is factual and requires research because probably both statements are correct in different senses. If a person wants help researching this themselves then I could help them or actually better to send anyone who asks these questions to WP:MED. Thanks for pinging me. Comment on the need for wikipedia subject recruitment review process

Hey Bluerasberry, there's a discussion on wiki-research-l about the need for a subject recruitment review process for recruiting Wikipedians for studies. Would you mind chiming in on the thread? Photo Replacement Help

Aloha Blue!

I'm trying to replace the photo of Shwayze- but I am having a hard time. When I try to replace the current photo with my photo it links to on his album covers.

What even gets weirder is that when I try to hot link it in this message- it doesnt seem to work right.

Peterchiapperino It is always a pleasure to help anyone who donates such high quality photos as you do.
The problem was that there were multiple files named "Shwayze". This should not have happened and this was the first time I have seen this problem. It could be totally prevented in the future if you had a unique filename, like "Person in Hawaii August 2014", but no one would have expected you to fix this and the problem was on this end.
It might not be totally sorted out - if it looks okay in a day then everything should be cool. Come back anytime. There is no need for you to look up solutions to problems - come here and ask anytime. Thanks for visiting. Blue Rasberry (talk) 02:14, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Mahalo Blue! I appreciate the compliments and the help! Expect more photos of some sci-fi actors in the upcoming months and maybe even a new article on Hawaii Con if its article worthy (I have to check the criteria first). I get hired to take concert photos for magazines and events, but I always keep Wikipedia in mind and save a few shots to post. I always tell the musicians to watch their wikipedia page, they usually respond with a laugh, and they say "Wait, you're serious?!" followed by a quick brush of the hair and straightening of the shirt. My one wish is that I didn't lose my high res shot of Tony Bennett, the photo I have is low res- but it would have been perfect. Sigh... Peterchiapperino (talk) 02:36, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Peterchiapperino Many people do not take Wikipedia seriously but I have no idea why. It is the most consulted source of information on almost every topic and every person. A few years ago a Wikipedian in NYC tried to take lots of celebrity photos as shown at David Shankbone. He became the most popular photographer in the world both in terms of how many people have seen his photos and how frequently his photos are republished. If you can really find a way to work Wikipedia into your life and job then your work would get around. There is not really any fame or money to be had in doing this, but photos on Wikipedia get seen and used. I am going to Wikimania soon and will be busy till late August, but if you ever want to talk more about celebrity photos and Wikipedia then let's talk sometime after that. I have wished to meet more people who would say what you just said but even with all the Wikipedians looking everyone for more people like you and Shankbone, it seems there really just are not people interested in donating even single photos of their work. I agree with you Bluerasberry! Everyone knows what Wikipedia is! Anyone whos picture I have taken and have posted remembers me and gives me better access the next time and sometimes gives me a mention twitter or instagram with the photo. I think the main issue for photographers is the worry that people will take the picture and print it and use it for personal/commercial purposes with out credit. I admit its definately a worry of mine, but about once a month I do "reverse google image searches" along with "Bing Image match search" to find out whos giving me credit and who isn't. About once a month I send out a few emails letting them know that the CC license allows them to use the photo for any purpose, but that they must give credit. Nine times out of ten, this works! Whats even an added benefit is if the photo credit is hotlinked to your offical webpage, and your google SEO is in order for your website, you can dominate a given search. Currently, I'm working on dominating searches about "Honolulu Concert Photographer" and "Honolulu Nightlife Photographer." I have a ways to go yet before I get there, but I'm certain I will. I never thought of "Honolulu Celebrity Photographer." Thanks for the idea! I am sure I will run into an SEO wizard eventually. Peterchiapperino (talk) 00:30, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

SSRI discontinuation syndrome

Hi. Thanks for taking a look at this, its much appreciated. On the Talk page you left the comment

"References 7, 8, and 10 above are not reliable sources by Wikipedia standards for asserting the existence of adverse events. Why not just use reference 9?"

Was hoping you would take another look and make sure that these are the correct numbers you are referring to, as reference 8 is the one that is a secondary source and I'm guessing that is the one you meant to recommend. But I certainly don't want to put words in your mouth, and appreciate your taking the time to look at this in either case. I wouldn't ask except that the discussion to date has been pretty polarized, thus my need to ask for outside input to avoid 3RR.

I suppose that I could start planning do organize something in Mexico for Wikimania, and perhaps that could start now with any contact of yours who wants to meet the international community of medicine editors. We had about 10 talks this last Wikimania and considering the importance of Spanish language, I expect there would be just as much interest next year. Thank you for cup of coffee... I am currently committed to contribute more and more articles about Gujarati culture especially Gujarati literature and authors. It is true that, due to Modi, more people are interested in Gujarat nowadays. Gujarati authors are not covered well in English wikipedia due to lack of English citation sources and committed contributors and we have about 270+ articles on Gujarati Wikipedia about Gujarati authors. Student organization

Hi Lane,

I am Matt from the Ohio State Evolution class. As a TA, I have to grade student contribution, but the current setup on the course page has all students listed in a giant string, organized by how recent their enrollment was. Can we reorganize this list, or in some other way make it convenient to find students on the list? Alphabetical would work, but I'd prefer to sort them by the section of our course that they are in.
