Bearclaw Coffee Page

Now that the Bearclaw page has been pretty much wiped clean, any chance you could get rid of that COI tag? I know I dont have anyting to do with the company, they are just from my town, I don't know about any one else who contributed. There's just not very much information on the page, so I don't see how the information can portray COI. Thanks.

Basque page

Dont worry, I wasnt insulted or anything, i just saw the word "hillbillies" as unensyclopedic and unneccesary for the sentence considering it alreay talked about them being mountain people. --Joebengo 23:24, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Adding and wikifying

Sorry about the slow response! By all means edit any article in any way that will improve it. You can certainly add people you know, but be careful that the article is neutral and not a Conflict of interest. The best way to avoid any problems is to cite your sources. See WP:RS. You cannot put in information told to you directly by the article subject. It has to have been published in a reliable source. Again, sorry I took so long! Your note did not have its own header and I thought it was part of

another message. You can start a new section by hitting the + sign in the tabs above. Jokestress 00:11, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

I am not sure that the source for the statement on David Standish Ball's opinion on same-sex unions is properly sourced, i.e., it is from Integrity, the LGBT group within the ECUSA, which is (properly) biased (I am a member). Should I remove that statement and sourcing as POV? Bearian 14:25, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Sandi and the Sunsetz

In case it's deleted later, here's today's info on this page:

Sandii & the Sunsetz - Japanese band -- This looks like a good article -- can anyone tackle it? If not, I'll try on/after 3/30/07.Bearian 18:59, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

I'll start, but please do add to it when you can. Pkeets 03:07, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Why was this article deleted? Bearian 18:58, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

I saved it before it was complete, and it had a some text that was copyright infringement in it. Also, there was a comment that it lacked in "notability." However, I've worked this out with Centrix and you can now find it safely in place. Check it out and see what you think: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandii_and_the_Sunsetz Pkeets 22:46, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

SUNY New Paltz

Hey man - nice edits.

The only thing I was calling "vandalism" was the removal of legit text, such as the link to WikiPaltz. I know that you did not do any of this.

One thing I notice about your edit: Poskanzer was Vice Provost, not Counsel, when he worked at SysAdmin. RadicalHarmony 19:10, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Correct, I think his title was Vice Provost, but he was really SUNY Central high legal advisor, counsel, and potentate. :-) 20:13, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Visual Kei bands

Hi, B. Hi, I've written some articles on Visual Kei bands that are in danger of deletion for lack of proper references. If you read Kanji, could you help find me some? Here are the links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missalina_Rei http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliene_Ma%27riage

Here's another I didn't write that also seems in danger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noir_Fleurir

Also, I see complaints that "notability" has not been established, which would be evidence of national hits, national or international tours, awards, etc. I'd greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.Pkeets 21:47, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

I can't read Kanji. But I'll see if I can help. I'll cross-post this comment on your page. Bearian 23:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, B. I notice you're put Sandii and the Sunsetz in the Visual kei list. I think they seriously predate the Visual kei movement. Do you think this is a better list for them? List of J-pop artists Pkeets 13:28, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Dealing with vandals

Thanks for checking in on this. Vandals can be very annoying, but we have ways to deal with them. You can read about the policy here: Wikipedia:Vandalism. Be sure to read about types of vandalism and what isn't vandalism.

After you correct vandalism, warn the editor on their talk page. We have a bunch of templates for warnings that you can use. If you copy this:

{{subst:test1}} ~~~~

You can paste that onto an editor's talk page for a template. I usually make a new topic heading with the name of the article for reference. If they vandalize after the first warning, change "test1" to say "test2." Using "test4" is a final warning, so use 1, 2, or 3 first. If you have warned people repeatedly on their talk pages, you can report them here. Please note that you have to have warned them according to policy before reporting them here.

Once you have more experience, there are even special tools you can sign up to use that let you automatically revert and warn vandals. It sounds complicated, but you can revert and warn a vandal in seconds after a while. Let me know if you have other questions! Jokestress 01:03, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

The previous block expired and the IP editor returned to vandalize, so the IP editor has been blocked a second time. If they persist, they may be indefinitely blocked. Jokestress 20:40, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I have accidently failed to log in, and edited articles from, IP 71.245.156.223 ... which means I can be traced to Bryant and Stratton ... which means I need to declare my potential conflict with editing that article. OOOPS. Bearian 23:33, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Kevin Granata - hangon tag

Just a tip -- the {{hangon}} tag means that you are objecting to an article's being tagged for *speedy* deletion. The Kevin Granata article is not so tagged -- it's at AFD instead. The hangon tag is unnecessary for AFD'd articles, because AFD debates are supposed to last a minimum of five days. All the hangon tag does is make the page show up at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, where it doesn't belong. Thanks, NawlinWiki 19:33, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

In Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tim Bowles (4th nomination), you supported deletion and listed as one of your reasons as "no other clients, as far as I can tell". Why do you find this article sounding as an advertisment? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Digital_Planet Why do you think it is not neutral? Moving content to user pages

Hi there! See Wikipedia:User_page#How_do_I_create_a_user_subpage.3F for the basics. Usually, I am absolutely certain an article is an autobiography that will probably be deleted, I will move it to (as an example) User:Bearian, making sure to to erase anything that's already there. However, I believe the safest bet is to move it to User:Bearian/Sandbox. To create that page, go to their User page, type "/Sandbox" right after their Username in the URL, then paste the content you wish to move into the box and hit save. Be sure to let them know the new address and why you did it on their talk page. If the content has anything inappropriate (such as an attack on an editor or libel about an article subject), you may wish to edit that out and make a note of it, too. Glad I could help! Jokestress 03:27, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

LGBT Project To Do list

Hi, Bearian! I noticed your edits to the LGBT to do list. Just FYI, that list is automatically generated every night, so if the article in question has a cleanup tag, it will be put on the list. Thanks for your help! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:29, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Just as an added note, there's no need to actually add to the "to do" list, since it's automatically generated every night :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 04:33, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

About the article Duane Otani

Hello. Sorry, I am not Duane Otani. I'm a newbie student who's just trying to learn how to make Wikipedia articles. I thought I had to register a username under his name because I thought that was going to be a title of the article. Otani is my music teacher, so I thought it would be a load of fun creating an article about someone I know. Also, I was still learning how to maintain a neutral point of view, without using any first person or second person pronouns. So far, I thought I was good at editing, and I thought I could make a great article. I'm sorry I posted resumes; I didn't really read thoroughly through the sources. I thought those pages were those references. And I had no intent on advertising either. So, again, sorry for my big mistake. I'm not going to edit the article any further, so you can delete it if you need it. Thanks for reading. 5/29/07

About the article Duane Otani

I understand and am aware about the fact that anybody else can edit articles (I've edited to a few other articlees so far). I already saw another person edit the article. On to my question:

How do I do anything to make the article more "notable"? I do use search engines for sources to prove the facts are true, but I know there are other ways. Can I please have more tips? Thanks!

Edit: Random question: Are you one of the Wikipedia staff members? I see you have the power to put up tags delete articles, and monitor almost about anything on this site.

Duane Otani student. 23:01, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

You have exactly the same powers as he has. It is a case of how you use them. ArtLit 14:11, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Donald Meltzer article

Can you tell me in detail (with specific examples) why you put those tags on my article? ArtLit 15:40, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Your comment on my talk page does not answer my question to specify in detail your objections to my article. You describe yourself there as an 'experienced editor' but I note you have been contributing for 4 months. I have been editing and writing for books and professional journals for 26 years. The way you have wikified the article I wrote shows you do not understand the purpose of the words and have not even checked the links, one of which is red. Eg, 'supervisor' in the article refers to an academic supervisor not to a factory supervisor as in the Wikipedia entry under that heading; ‘the Tavistock’ refers to the Tavistock Insitute as already linked, not to the town in Devon. Wikipedia guidelines for making links are: "If I were reading the article, would the link be useful to me?" On that basis I have reverted your links apart from the date link for which there is a special guideline, and I have retained the original links I put in, which would actually help a new reader to get a grasp of the subject. This is the function of any encyclopaedia. The article will look less wikified but the links will actually be meaningful.
  • You say you are worried about the effect on a 'possibly uneducated public'. At the top of your own user page is a non-grammatical and meaningless sentence. Perhaps you should edit your own work more carefully before correcting other people's on behalf of the non-educated.

Put me down with the others on your list of people (are they all professional women writers?) with whom you have a personal conflict of interest. ArtLit 14:11, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Tags

At Fierce Beast-Fist Beast Arts, the various tags you put on the article make absolutely no sense. There can be no conflict of interest, as it is is a fictional martial arts school that appears in a Japanese TV series. There are multiple references that verify the information within the article. Additionally, notability is covered as it meets the notability guidelines for fiction. As such, I have removed these tags you placed on the article. Unless I am missing something here, tell me why the tags were necessary.—Ryūlóng (竜龍) 21:10, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Immigration law

I'm almost inclined to nominate it for deletion. Right now the article really doesn't say anything. It's hard to write general articles on topics that are so inherently national. I did see that it's part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Law, so I've added it to their "to do" list. ·:·Will Beback ·:· 01:20, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Donald Meltzer

Dear Bearian, I want to tell you, that I did not want to be disrespectful. I am sorry, if this was the case. I recieved an e-mail from Artlit, who was desperate, because there were these tags on her article and did not know how to reach a user the usual way. She could not understand the reason, why these tags were added to an article, she thought to be scientific correct. For her, this seemed to be a personal attack. She did not know, how to react on these tags. The only thing I wanted to do, was to explain, that adding such tags does not have to say, that her statements are wrong, but usually are the automatic reaction on certain standardized impulses. By telling Artlit, that the usual user, including me, is to stupid to have a knowledge of his own of Donald Meltzer and therefore is not able to relly judge the content of the article of someone who made scientific research, but reacts on impulses, just like Palov´s dog, I wanted to make sure, she understands, that adding these tags does not say what she wrote is wrong, but there are certain aspects which make the usual user suspicious, without knowing about the correctness of these suspicions. That´s why I explicitly included myself to these idiots, unable to review such an article in its scientific depht, because they lack information. I do review articles within several projects. There at least I have a limited knowledge, but do not have any doubt about my person. Compared to the editor, who in case of doubt made serious research to write an article, I am an idiot, who tries to rate contents, he does not understand completely and therefore especially looks for such things as the words our and we and reacts on them like Pavlov´s dog. I would have reacted the same way as you, in my case without thinking, which desperation I could cause in a newcomer. My coure against this kind of thoughtlessnes is help for newcomers. I was lucky not to be discovered until i began to understand the ways of wikipedia. I can assure you, they make you think about your ways. I only hope that everyone, who was the object of one of my misjudgements understands about it, does not care about this guy and goes on editing. Perhaps you are an expert on Donald Meltzer, but this would be very unusual for the average user. I would never dare to make statements about a special user, because I do not really know him. I make comments on the typical user and do not expect him to be much more intelligent than the usual human beings, who seem to try to prove our ability in stupidity every day.

One of the strong points of wikipedia is the equality of all users, but as a result of this equality especially newcomers have to understand that revisions do not have to be done by a person with better knowledge of the topic. Reviews, comments and tags are made on many reasons, most of them not have anything to do with superior knowledge but refelces on learned situations. This case proved me right, because here a bot made the first tag and the programmed reaction of a bot really is the ultimate case of Pavlov´s dog. I just wanted Artlit to understand this and to take it easy. Perhaps my usual ironic way was a problem here. This expression of doubt against the abilities of the typical user (including me)schould set up Artlit, but it should not offend someone, especially a particular user, in this case you. I only can repete, that I am sorry, if I should have offended you. I did not want to do so. I hope you can forgive me. In future I will try to use a more civilized and a more polite way of expression, but I hope you understand that my only purpose was the support of this newcomer.

There is one thing I want to ask you. Please be patient with newcomers. Pride on your knowledge and research mixed with a lack of experience on wikipedia can generate terrible results. We all should try to help them. The worst thing we can do is to evict good editors form wikipedia, because we do not want to understand them. Sometimes a simple, "I do not know about your research or about your motives, so please explain me to enable me to react on your edit" may be a big help. I have the experiance to understand, that you only want to improve wikipedia but this really is not important. Newcomers like Artlit have to understand this too or wikipedia will lose them. Please do not let this happen. Have a nice day and many happy edits. --Thw1309 17:54, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

The vandalism now is not very bad (comparatively). If it gets worse and there are multiple vandal accounts, try WP:RFPP. After you revert the vandalism, warn the user using a warning from WP:UTM. You don't have to start with the lowest level warnings, see WP:VAND for some guidance. Users and IPs are not usually blocked unless they have vandalized after receiving a level 4 warning, such as {{uw-vand4}}. Pages are not usually protected unless there are multiple instances of vandalism by multiple people in a short timespan. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 20:09, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi - As you know, I agree that there are COI issues with this page (heck, I tagged it that way originally), however, I am not sure that I agree with your speedy tag. The guy's on MTV NZ and SKY - those are both pretty notable. I don't disagree enough to {{hangon}} the page myself, but I think this one should go to AFD if you're determined to delete it - not Speedy. - Philippe | Talk 22:37, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Terrell Newman

What right do you have to tag the Terrell Newman page with the comment about this fictional detective being "not notable by any means"? This is a very sweeping and arrogant remark. What are your grounds for saying this, apart from sheer ignorance? The novels have attracted a yahoo fan club that has a larger number of members than most writers. The screenplay of the first Newman novel, "The Deliverer", has attracted high praise on Francis Ford Coppola's screenplay workshop as well as the interest of an award-winning movie director. There is movie interest in two other novels in the Terrell Newman series.Siebahn

Thanks, Bearian, for removing the tag and for noting the improvements. That shows a good spirit. So many would have taken umbrage and dug in their heels after my indignant comments. I note your profile says you are gay. There is a one very sympathetic gay figure, and one not-so-sympathetic gay figure, in the novel "Innocent on The Hill", and a moving portrayal of a woman trapped in a very macho man's body in "Death of An American Idol". Gender becomes a very blurred concept in the BDSM trilogy that begins with "House of Correction". You might like them. If you email me at Siebahn@aol.com I can give you details of two other books that might be of interest. Siebahn

P.S. I am confused about the question of citations and references. What exactly are you asking for? BTW somebody removed the loglines for these books, claiming that they were copyrighted. However, they are now in the public domain, having been published on numerous open websites, and I have Taylor's permission to offer them free of copyright. Siebahn

Hi. To answer your questions: 1. Example: Find a review from the NY Times Review of Books, and cite it with day, date, and page #, and author. Then click on this for more ideas and to get the correct order or style. 2. I have no idea why they did that, but I do know you must have the publisher give Wikipedia the permission under GNU, or use "fair use" -- a short quote or a cover of a book. Or post the URL -- the web page address -- of a PDF file with a copy of the license. Bearian 20:19, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Theater under the stars COI case

No 3RR, just garden variety vandalism by the article author. The bots have warned him, so we don't need to follow up there. Since the author removed the WP:PROD notice, the next logical step is to list the article at WP:AFD. I could do this myself, but I'd like to give you a little more experience.
