Re: Victimology

Nope, I'd prefer not to. Why did you ask me when all I've done is some history merging and importing of the article? Graham87 00:55, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Why not? Bearian (talk) 20:37, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

1 year block on mobile IP 109.78.96.156?

Seems excessive to me. User will just disconnect and reconnect to continue on other IP. Geraldo Perez (talk) 17:15, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Not to me. I make difficult blocks. Indef would be too much, a month too little. I didn't block them in any other way -- a person using the IP just has to register. I'll double-check to be sure I didn;t over-do it. Bearian (talk) 17:18, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Your call, of course. Just seems futile. Unless you block the complete range used by Vodafone Ireland Limited you end up playing Whac-A-Mole with this editor. Geraldo Perez (talk) 17:23, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Looking into the Special:Contributions/109.78.96.156, I see a lot of vandalism in the past 24 hours, all of the same type. This IP must be a time traveller or has a crystal ball. No, it's a vandalism-only account, probably some teenage boy from Ireland who just got his first smart phone for his birthday. I am not a big fan of range blocks, and have not done one recently, so itf that's needed, take it to WP:AIV. Bearian (talk) 17:26, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
I'm not suggesting a range block on any mobile ISP exit IPs - too much collateral damage possibility - just that is what would need to be done to stop this particular editor, if that is desired. Last time I saw this done to a mobile ISP a checkuser undid it with a warning not to do it again. [1] Geraldo Perez (talk) 17:34, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Well, I am not a checkuser. So I use the mop that I have, not "the nuclear mop" that I wish I had. :-) Bearian (talk) 17:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Your comment on the Talk page for user 75.27.42.188

Your original comment: "Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. If you have a dispute over content, please go to the discussion or talk page before deleting a whole section."

My response: Although you have a user name and customized talk page, you have no more right to edit, or revert edits, than any other user on Wikipedia. This is a shared IP address, as should be evident by the wildly varying subjects in its user contribution history. All of my edits have been constructive—supported by sound logic and good writing—and have improved their respective articles. Categorizing my edits as "vandalism" is a passive-aggressive personal attack, a kind of roundabout argumentum ad hominem.

Please stop.

75.27.42.188 (talk) 17:50, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Well ...
  1. Sorry, but, I do have extra duties and powers here, mostly unwanted duties. admins act as "moppers" for this website.
  2. If you want to contribute as a regular user, please register under a nickname/username.
  3. Somebody from Texas is being a vandal, possibly a neighbor of yours. Bearian (talk) 23:15, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices. Bearian (talk) 17:16, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Well ...
  1. Sorry, but, even as as administrator, accusing me of vandalism is inaccurate, and rude. I appreciate your enthusiasm for Wikipedia, but to extend your metaphor, your mop water full of cleaning solution is getting on my nice shoes.
  2. As I have already said, all of my edits have been constructive—supported by sound logic and good writing—and have improved their respective articles. As such, they cannot justly be considered vandalism, whether you personally like them or not. I cannot see any edits using this IP address that seem disruptive, but I admit, I'm not following them very closely, because, as I have already said, this is a shared IP address, and I don't really care about the edit history of articles I haven't even heard of.
  3. I'm in Illinois (in a workplace), and have nothing to do with vandals in Texas.

75.27.42.188 (talk) 20:20, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Interesting. Is AT&T your workplace IT provider? That company may provide access to you and the vandal. Bearian (talk) 20:42, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes. Mystery unraveled. 75.27.42.188 (talk) 21:25, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Mullingar

You asked me to remind you about a vandal at Mullingar. He's back. But as I said last week, no need to rush, it's a long term problem. Certes (talk) 00:26, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, that should keep him at bay for a while. Certes (talk) 21:12, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Semi-protection worked well for the month. The contributor is now back from his enforced rest, with more of the usual libel. I can take this up somewhere more general, but thought I'd mention it here first as you know the case. Certes (talk) 18:06, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Question

Hi Bearian, I am have noticed some behaviour that suggests an editor who edits under a number of I.P addresses but all in the same range is avoiding a likely block for disruptive/tendentious editing. Talk page warnings are almost always reverted and the editor tends to make dozens of edits to articles without using edit summaries which makes it very difficult to track changes. Is it worth opening a sockpuppet report when all the editors are I.Ps ? I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Flat Out let's discuss it 01:00, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Go ahead and report the IP. I have not started a sockpuppet investigation in years, and I can;t recall how to do so. Bearian (talk) 23:09, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
If an editor is being disruptive it makes no difference that they haven't registered. If you wish to elaborate your concerns at my TP, feel welcome. I'm no expert but willing to help out. RashersTierney (talk) 23:24, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello Bearian. I was led to the Iraq War article by this comment that User:Truthwillneverdie left at WP:AN3. I agree with your full protection, and Truthwillneverdie's block seems routine, but I wonder if there is any way to nudge the talk page participants and show them a way forward. Though User:CJK is defending his 12,000 characters of proposed changes on the article talk page at exhaustive length he does not appear to have support from others. Taking this to ANI would most likely go nowhere good. Any ideas for some sage admin advice that you could provide to the parties? I can imagine a well-structured RfC, and one could try to get CJK to agree to accept the result. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 03:53, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Oy veh. I have no clue: the older I get, the more I realise how much I don't know. I was just trying to get to a temporary solution. Bearian (talk) 13:59, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

CJK has the same problems everywhere he goes. Here is what is being said about him on the Alger Hiss talk page:

Ok, I'm going to propose another compromise. Since, as WP:Consensus(!) makes clear, any agreements regarding article content do not have to to unanimous, and since CJK is clearly going to continue with his endless repetitive tendentious behaviour until the cows come home, I propose that the rest of the contributors to this talk page just ignore him, and try to reach a compromise between us. It seems to me that Collect for one is willing to make moves in this direction, and I suspect that others may well see this as the best way to break the impasse too. I'll leave this proposal for others to think about for now, and return to the topic tomorrow. AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:05, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Speaking to the larger question, Yes as a matter of fact I have been thinking of writing up a possible compromise. Good suggestion and thank you for making it. I have limited Internet access this week and can't give this full attention. Peace. Joegoodfriend (talk) 01:11, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
I'd say that's a good idea Andy.Capitalismojo (talk) 01:55, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Excellent suggestion Andy! As a wise man once said, “Never wrestle with a pig -- You'll both get dirty, but the pig will like it. Never try to teach a pig to sing -- It wastes your time and it annoys the pig” 76.182.40.135 (talk) 02:41, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

I think the whole WP community would be very happy if some administrator just took the courageous step of blocking CJK permanently from WP. Truthwillneverdie (talk) 14:16, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Davison

Hi. If you're interested, and sorry to drag you into this, there's also the article Davison Design & Development where there's been a low level edit war for 2 years.

If you look at the talk page, I don't make any secret of disapproving of other involved editors. I personally feel like I'm stuck between people who are trying to push POVs on both extremes and am trying to keep it balanced. Hopefully this deletion discussion will bring in some more neutral people who can make a better attempt at finding a balance than I can manage alone. Thanks! Request for page unprotection

Regarding Iraq War, all of the users who were reverting my edits have ceased responding to me. The only person who has responded in the last few days is a user who followed me there from a different dispute for the purposes of obstruction and seems to have little interest in legitimately debating my edits.

My edits are extensive, yet all of the users have chosen to quibble over small details. Even assuming there is a response from users legitimately involved, it would take up to a year or so to resolve all the arguments at the rate we are going.

Energy Law

Bearian, you have been doing a lot of good work on the various Energy Law articles. I am concerned that the main article, Energy Law, although international in scope, is becoming overly dominated by the lengthy section (~ 1/2 or more of the article) on US energy law. Would you object to leaving a brief US summary in Energy Law, and letting me move large parts of it over to the US-specific articles? Thanks. Plazak (talk) 20:41, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

O.K., Plazak, but I think a larger article at United States energy law would be better. I can start one in a few days, or you can be bold and do it yourself. Bearian (talk) 20:48, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

CJK reverts of Iraq war

Can anyone do anything about all the CJK reverts on the Iraq war? I thought there was a 3 revert limit, he has done at least 9. Here are the last three, each undone by a different editor.

(cur | prev) 02:09, 21 July 2013‎ CJK (talk | contribs)‎ . . (244,466 bytes) (+16,061)‎ . . (Restoring my wrongfully deleted contributions) (undo | thank)

(cur | prev) 17:17, 8 July 2013‎ CJK (talk | contribs)‎ . . (244,466 bytes) (+16,580)‎ . . (restoring my blanked edits) (undo | thank)

These are all reverts of the WP:Consensus version of the article to a version supported by CJK alone. Please see talk page under heading “WP:Consensus – CJK’s edits contain original research and move article to a less NPOV” for more details. Truthwillneverdie (talk) 13:24, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Since I can't even claim to be an expert in the matter, I am not getting involved in the substance of this dispute. That having been said, can you take this to formal dispute resolution, such as WP:AN? Bearian (talk) 16:11, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

New Jersey Copyright Dispute

Bearian, We need your assistance regarding a dispute about whether works of the New Jersey state government are in the public domain, and thus useable on Wikipedia. Template:PD-NJGov states that pictures and documents from websites of the executive branch of the New Jersey government, and from public record requests (i.e., FOIA requests) are in the public domain. The disagreement lies in whether the works are truly in the public domain and may be modified, or whether they can merely be copied and distributed. Here is the template and deletion discussion in question. DavidinNJ (talk) 20:53, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
