Problem with IP editor

Hi. I really need some administrator-to-administrator advice. Can you offer your opinions on Question 2 - 5 that I've posed at the top of this discussion?

Everyone else participating there is only focusing on Question 1, which I thought would be answered more quickly and straightforwardly, and is already being discussed at Talk:Kobe Bryant sexual assault case If you want to offer your insights on Question 1 as well, can you do so there? Your response to questions 3, 4, and 5 here would be useful. Since that discussion is archived, you can respond to me on my talk page, I guess.

And btw, fisking merely means a point-by-point rebuttal. But this does not require, by definition, inserting the responses inside the original post. I myself employ fisking, which you can see in my posts on Jimmy's talk page and the article talk page, but I just place my responses afterward, sometimes quoting the passage I'm responding to. I note that you had an opinion on this article during an AfD discussion which was closed as no consensus and wanted to suggest that you open another such discussion. If you look for his book, you'll find it's selfpublished through Smashwords and is an expansion of his Ph.D. thesis, which was from University of Wales Lampeter -- a rather dodgy university that apparently had great difficulty in maintaining academic standards. MSU Interview

Dear Bearian,


My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Dogs Against Romney

I undid the following edit of yours because it seems too far removed from the topic of the article, which is about Seamus: In February 2012, a Dogs Against Romney protestor was Terry stopped by police on suspicion of animal abuse, but he only had a stuffed animal in the carrier on top of his motor vehicle. While I understand the interest of this story among animal lovers, I think the story has more to do with the campaign against Romney than it has to do with Seamus, or the original 1983 incident. If you strongly disagree with my decision, feel free to restore the edit, or possibly rewrite the sentence so that it is more closely tied to the rest of the article. Thank you. Metriorrhynchus

I noticed that you created this redirect about four years ago. Yes, this genus of beetles lives! A redirect would be nonsense, redirecting to a fish genus, and thus hurt the project. Yet deletion of the page would also hurt the project, as virtually all genera of living creatures are notable. Bearian (talk) 17:49, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Nice work! The spelling Metriorrhynchus is an occasional lapsus calami (slip of the pen) for Metriorhynchus, the Jurassic crocodilian. But obviously, a nice article on the beetle genus of the same name is preferable, especially with redirects in place on both articles, as you've done. Nice work! AfD for romney neologism

Although I initially voted for Keep for the article on the romney neologism, I now lean toward merge with the Seamus article. You stated on the AfD page that we can merge the info in another article before the AfD is closed. I'd be glad to do that, but I'm not sure how to do that merger without getting complaints that I violated WP:NPOV, WP:NOTE, WP:UNDUE, WP:NEO, etc.

The info about the romney neologism previously had a sentence on the Seamus page, and it was removed. If you look at Talk:Seamus (dog), the introduction of any new info onto that article has been very contentious. Do you have any advice? Debbie W. 23:38, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Dr. Mario (HELP)

Hello. Two users, one who recently created an account and the other who is under IP, are constantly undoing constructive edits on the Dr. Mario article. Messages were left on the article's talk page as well as on users' talk pages for explanations of their edits, but no answers were provided. Since the edits are unconstructive and quite disruptive, not contributing to ameliorate the article in any way, I would ask to semi-protect the article, or do any other action to stop the users from constantly undoing modifications. San Jose Hospital & Trauma Center article

Thanks for taking the time to try to get someone to take notice of this article. I could not find much info on the hospital, but I have seen it and know it is the only hospital in the vicinity. I think the powers that be would do better to leave the article as a stub. There is surely someone who can find info on the article. Hi, I think there might be some {{db-move}} actions you performed where you deleted the page but didn't carry out the move. In looking at the logs, I see for instance Glossary of textile terms is a redlink. -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 16:08, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

I am confused. Actually, I have avoiding getting involved in any moves personally. Someone else deleted Glossary of textile terms and I deleted Talk:Glossary of textile terms because there was no mainspace article, per WP:CSD#G8. No move was neeeded. There was one case, Saint-Paulin_(cheese), which I deleted to make room for a move by another editor. When I delete the one page, I see it as a conflict of interest to make the move in such cases. What do you want me to do exactly? Bearian (talk) 18:05, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I was the person who asked for the Saint-Paulin (cheese) move. The point is that in situations like this, the deletion and the move usually should be done atomically, ie, either both or neither. If I proposed to move United States to United States of America (ie, to reverse the current redirect), the administrator who handled it should not simply delete United States of America and leave it as a redlink; it has many incoming links. There is no notification to the requester when the deletion has been done, so they would have to remember to check for it in their watchlist; if they fail to remember, it remains a redlink indefinitely (and it really shouldn't remain a redlink even temporarily). -- P.T. Regarding Glossary of textile terms, the log seemed to indicate that you delete both the page and its talk page (17:34, 29 February 2012). Anyways, I don't know the circumstances of it, I just noticed a redlink in conjunction with a G6 page-move edit summary, and wondered if it was a similar case to the cheese page. -- P.T.
