The titles of the books are in the article by Heinz Meyer that's in the references. I can send it to you if you are interested. I just checked, he writes "De celo", but that's probably also a typo. AxelBoldt (talk) 22:35, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Trouble.

I suggested caelo from caelum, which is Classical Latin (Cicero, Catullus).

At some time in the Dark or Middle Ages, there is a spelling transition.

Although I took 5 years of Latin, this matter was never covered at school. So I am hazy on the details.

Quite possibly, celo is correct at the time of the Fons.

(In Modern French and Spanish, we have ciel and cielo.)

But if we actually have De celo et signis celestibus on the page, anyone else with 2 years of Latin would say, "Shouldn't that be De caelo?"

Off hand, I don't know how WP handles this orthographic clash between older and newer Latin.

There is doubtless a WikiProject with an expert on this time period.

Maybe ask the guys over at lawiki?

Thoughts on the Olber's Paradox article

I believe you are the originator of the excellent article Olber's paradox. Having just read the current version of that article rather closely, I became curious to find out who started it. When I found and read your first version, I realized that it could serve as a good summary of the current version (both versions being, in my opinion, unusually good articles). But it also strikes me that your first version might be considered in some sense better, because of covering the ground while still being so compact.

There is different paradox (not Olber's), or at least a puzzle lurking here: articles are usually improved over time, but also lose brevity, an important virtue. This leads me to wonder where the Wikipedia process might be headed in the long term. Will many articles eventually become too complete, and therefore too long, for most readers to absorb? Yes, that's a danger. Ideally, every article would consist of a compact summary before the table of contents, followed by an exhaustive elaboration with several sections. Alternatively, an initial Overview section could summarize the rest of a long article. In this fashion, Wikipedia should contain a concise and essentially self-contained encyclopedia-within-the-encyclopedia. AxelBoldt (talk) 17:55, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

• However, I do not think the existing style of summary is likely to blossom unless writing and improving summaries becomes a project.

Dr. Boldt, as you are a highly respected long-time editor, I was hoping you might be willing to lend some support for the inclusion of the later history of one of #1 Japanese junior idol group's entry into the adult actress / pornography video industry. The problem is that the fan base (including on WP) is emotionally invested in the idea of squeaky-clean innocent girl idols, and dont' want to face the reality that these girls are on extremely controlling, extremely poorly-paying contracts. Britney Spears, by being the #1 pop idol in America, is a millionaire several times over. But the AKB48 girls, after being "graduated" (or removed from the pop scene in a formal ceremony), often times have little or no savings whatsoever, and so one has turned into 2010's #1 porn star of the year. The practical world application of Floor and Ceiling Functions

I don't wish to be as radical as what is stated Naked_assertion but I have not found practical world application of Floor and Ceiling Functions. The function is often found in Postal Rate slab, Income tax slab, Goods and Service Tax slab, Examination Grade, etc. I have even found this function in jumping of electrons from one orbital to another in a bound state. What I am asking is not these real-world scenarios where the functions are witnessed, but cases where properties of these functions are utilised to perform predictable forcasts or results. Hallo Herr Boldt! And happy new year! I am editor Colton Cosmic. Excuse me for block evading via raw IP on your talkpage. I claim to been non-policy and abusively blocked. I am looking for an administrator willing to do a fresh review, and one that favors evidence over accusations. Why you? It is January 1, and thus the year's begin, so I looked for an administrator whose username began with the alphabet's begin, and came across you. The background is I tried the standard appeal processes but I found them staffed by the same people hyperactively blocking editors, as if were all some online game where they increased their scores. I was blocked for socking, but never has evidence been provided of this. Much has been made of suspicion.

I had a single prior account that I abandoned for privacy reasons, never going back. In that account I was the original author of probably four or five articles. I contributed greatly to many more. After a negative online experience, I recognized I wanted a degree of online anonymity. So I switched to a new account. I believe this to be authorized under Wikipedia policy WP:CLEANSTART. I was 100 percent straightforward about it in my first edit[1]. My straightforwardness ironically led to my being blocked as a sockpuppet. This was the charge leveled by Timotheus Canens in May 2012. He permanently blocked me via button click without warning or explanation. I had edited Wikipedia making contributions, I say solid ones, for about six years. After that a great number of the WP:AN/ANI regulars descended on my talkpage, making all manner of accusations.

I appealed then to Arbcom. Silktork denied the appeal without explanation. Much, much later he said that he suspected me to be some notorious sanctioned user. I am not that user. He would not provide evidence or any reasoning, though he said that his suspicion was "reasonable," repeating the word "reasonable" three or four times. My position is that Arbcom's *declining to unblock* is not itself a *block* and thus I am free to appeal to any administrator in accordance with WP:UNBLOCK. An arbitrator himself told me this, though I remember not which one. He said "Arbcom has no monopoly on appeals." Okay, I have perhaps typed too much here already. I do not want to trap you in some super-long text. If you unblock me merely at my talkpage, I will answer any questions you have (and certainly cease block evasion via raw IP). Colton Cosmic.

PS: To be clear, I have made similar requests of many administrators, who decline for various reasons, most often for hierarchy but others for "too much trouble" and "I don't want to get involved." It is I think a less controversial thing to unblock me at my talkpage for further evaluation, but if you end up believing in my innocence and unblock generally, that will be a very unpopular action among several admins and arbs. Okay. I need help, but there are others and I am not upset about your decision. I looked at your "real names proposal" essay yesterday. It was good to read. People should try to improve the system. I would be in favor of a policy of Wikipedia administrators personally identifying, because they exercise control over others. I do not know if I'd support real naming of common editors, but if it were done administrators first, we'd gain experience on the effects of such a policy, and be better able to judge where to go from there. If you want to look at a policy proposal I favor, it's the "universal optout" for biographical articles:[2]. Silktork stomped out that initiative because I touched it. Feedback needed on using special characters

Hello. Thank you for using VisualEditor! Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like ₥, IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters..." tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the '⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽' tool.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

• How often do you normally use Wikipedia's character inserters?
• Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
• How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
  • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
  • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
  • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
• The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like ℗ and ♀. Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
• Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
• Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes. Please leave your views on the central feedback page, or, if you'd prefer, you can contact me directly on my talk page. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how frequently you need to use special characters in your typical editing and what languages or other special characters are important to you.

Dear AxelBoldt, I am a French student in an engineering school and I am currently working on CFD equations. I want to solve the following equation: (x^2-4*x+6)*exp(x)=y (1) It looks a bit like the following equation: x*exp(x)=y (2) The solution of equation (2) is: x=LambertW(y) I think the solution of equation (1) uses the function LambertW. Since you have more knowledge than me in particular about the function LambertW, I ask you this question: Can you solve the equation (1)? I don't think you can solve that equation with the Lambert function. An equation of the form x^2*exp(x)=y can be solved (by taking square roots) to get x=2*LambertW(sqrt(y)/2), but the same trick does not seem to work for your equation. AxelBoldt (talk) 16:54, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

I wasn't the original author, I just contributed to the article. The Krull claim isn't from me. The very early history of old articles is unfortunately often incorrect, because the software and database structure changed a couple of times, article histories had to be reimported from database dumps, and this wasn't always done correctly and completely. Interpedia and motivations

Hi there,

I've been doing some research into encyclopedism and encyclopedists and came across your name when I got to Interpedia (via the usenet proposal/RfD). The discussions are, of course, fairly well documented but I'm curious to get your take on what motivations you perceived in those who worked on the project. There's a lot of evident early-Internet enthusiasm, explicit support for openness and access, and other such sentiments that carried over to Wikipedia, but were there other motivations or influences in play? Was this a political project for anyone? Did some people expect to make money through it? Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Hello! If you have just read through the old Interpedia archives you will definitely know a lot more about the project than I can remember now. I don't think it was a political project for anyone, except to the extent that providing free access to knowledge is a political project. Financial motives never came up as far as I recall. In fact, the early wikipedia.com had much more of a commercial flavor to it: it was run on servers owned by a private company, and the possibility of running ads on the site was implicitly there from the start (until Jimbo explicitly decided against it). I don't think we envisaged a central role for collaborative editing in Interpedia - the planned project was more alike Everything2 or Google's (now defunct) Knol project. Hi, I don't really know why it didn't catch on. I still think it was a good idea. (Famous last words...) Maybe the name was suboptimal; "wiki credits" or "appreciation points" or something like that would have been better. It could also be that people edit mainly out of an intrinsic motivation and need; maybe they don't like to be told what to do, because then it turns into a chore. Lastly, the system wasn't very visible: if you had missed the initial announcement, you'd never even hear about it. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, AxelBoldt. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi AxelBoldt.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Isha Upanishad "Edit War"

Disclaimer: I am new to Wikipedia and don't know how this place works. This request concerns a page on Hinduism. If you believe that this issue does not come under your domain, then please don't ignore this; rather suggest the name of another admin who CAN handle this issue.

I wish to inform you that there has been an "edit war" between me and the user Ms Sarah Welch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ms_Sarah_Welch). I put "edit war in quotes because it got resolved pretty quickly, and was in no way an actual conflict(look here-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Isha_Upanishad ,if you don't believe me). I only started nine days ago and she has been an established user for a long time. The reason for the "war" was that I had quoted from a non-RS based source, which was the version of the Isopanisad published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, which is also the publisher of THE MOST widely read edition of the Bhagavad Gita (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhaktivedanta_Book_Trust), in the whole world. Therefore, in no way do I consider this version to be a poorly known version. The other editors who have come before me have quoted the book, and the book is included in the list of references in the article itself! Still, I agree that mantras can be interpreted in many ways, but at the very least, I should be able to post the original mantras, IN SANSKRIT, without translation. The original mantras of course, cannot differ. Only the translation differs. Therefore, I request that you have a word with her about this issue. While I am in no way question the fact that she is an established editor, I will disagree with her over this issue. The "edit war" took place 9 days ago, and during this time, I have put much thought into this. I also believe that the opinion of other editors should also be taken, and that Ms Sarah Welch should not have a Monopoly over the page. I expect a courteous response, admin. Thanks, Lie Cleaner HK. Musical Set theory is it OR?

I noticed you had a comment on the Talk page of Set_theory_(music) asking if it was OR. I had the same question as I looked at it. Your comment seemed pretty dated though and there are several references and I do think there are some interesting things one can say about set theory and music. Although I checked one of the sources, a book by Howard Hanson and I did a search for "set " and only found one reference and it had nothing to do with set theory. So that makes me wonder about the other ones which I don't think are online. If you think the issue was resolved and there are good references I'll just drop it but if you still think it may be an issue I will follow up and get some of the references from the library to see if they really support the claims in the article. Just FYI, my background is I'm very strong in set theory, I'm taking a class right now on Modal Logic and I also know how to read music and know some very basic music theory. @Richard L. Peterson: Your edit has clarified the caption considerably, thanks! It took me a while to understand the Bayesian vs. frequentist graphs, but it all makes sense, especially with the given example. Unfortunately, I don't know how the estimate of doubling the median compares to the given estimates, but I'd assume it's worse. thanks for kind words!..i’ve been dry running the two estimates with N=511 and k=4 by flipping coins, and as you said doubling the median is indeed worse than the frequentist formula x=max + max/4 -1. Chaitin's constant is normal

Back in 2003, you added to Chaitin's constant the following revision: "Furthermore, Ω is a normal number." At the time, it was not unusual for facts like this to be added without a source. However, the page has since kept that fact unsourced for the last 16 years. When I came across it today, I was surprised, as I was not previously aware that it was normal. So I tried to do a quick search for a source on this. I found a paper by Brendan Saxburg that just mentions it as a known property of Ω, but he also gave no source. I see some papers by Cristian Calude that also mention it as normal, but again, I found no actual paper establishing it as normal. What I actually found when doing this search were several posts on both math and cs stackexchange where people are citing the wikipedia article's claim that it is normal and asking why this is so. ex 1,ex 2, ex 3

Now I don't doubt that Ω is normal. I certainly trust your and others expertise on a topic I know almost nothing about. But I was hoping that you could add a source to this on the wikipedia page for Chaitin's constant, given that you're the person who added this claim originally. I think having a source would help with the constant stream of questions on stackexchange and the misunderstandings that arise like in this numberphile video. Of course, you should not feel an obligation to honor this request; after all, I'm complaining about something that has sat there for 16 years without a source. If it's inconvenient for you to provide a source, I'm sure it won't actually matter all that much if it waits until some grad student or other finally adds it in one day. @Eric Herboso: thanks for alerting me to this. I don't remember where I read that Ω is normal, and indeed it is not normal in all cases. As your math.stackexchange ex 1 convincingly shows: it's normal only if you pick the right encoding for Turing machines. I'll see if I can find a source for this claim that's not math.stackexchange. Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

Appreciation and Question

Hello AxelBoldt. First I just wanted to say, as literally the longest serving admin here, you are basically a Wikipedia God and your tireless work speaks for itself. Thank you for all you have done. I also come here with a question that I am hoping your vast knowledge and experienced can help with.

When it comes to conflicts and conflict resolution about editing/adding new content, I was wondering what the procedure is for what has happened in this instance. What has happened is, I made an edit that I thought would improve an article (with the plan of editing a bunch of articles in the same category to standardise them). Someone else, almost immediately, reverted it. I started a dialog with that person (I am a reformed character and I believe I should not be treated based on my past blunders and transgressions) and had a few back and forths with them. After my last post raising good and valid points they went completely silent. Does this count as consensus? Do I have permission to edit again?

I would really appreciate if you could help me in this, I know you are a very busy individual, as I just want to make Wikipedia and the wider World a more informed place (even if it is just within my extremely specific sphere of interest). If a page is locked, there's typically a reason for it, for instance some political controversy leading to aggressive back-and-forth editing, or the danger that an ill-conceived edit could lead to widespread disruption, as in the case of widely used templates. ich hoffe, ich gerate hier an jemanden, der die Richtlinien des WP:COMMONNAME durchsetzen kann, ich weiß nicht mehr weiter, der Kern der Diskussion, wann und wo denn bewiesen wurde, dass Nur-Sultan im Englischen benutzt wird (der neue Name der Stadt seit 2 Jahren, benannt nach dem undemokratischen Diktator Nursultan Nazarbajev) wurde schlichtweg nicht beantwortet /die Diskussion abgebrochen.

Aus irgendeinem mir nicht ersichtlichen Grund, richten sich aber einige Aktivisten hier auf Wikipedia wohlwissentlich nicht an die eigenen Richtlinien, vermutlich aus politischen Gründen.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
