Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Auntof6! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Can you copyright biofacts such as job titles or express them in different words?!

2nd AfD nomination for article

I see you created Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Maged N. Kamel Boulos (2nd nomination). However, I can't find any first nomination anywhere. Can you give a link to it? Or is this a mistake? JamesBWatson (talk) 12:00, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Angarrack viaduct

Hi Auntof6, I have removed the orphan tag you placed on the new article Angarrack viaduct because five or six articles now link to it – that seems a reasonable number for an article of its length and nature. Andy F (talk) 11:35, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi again Auntof6, IIRC I put either one or two Wikilinks to Angarrack viaduct when I created it. Then I established the other links after I saw the orphan tag. So I doubt if Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser is misbehaving – it encouraged me to put in the links so it was fulfilling one of its functions. My bad. I wasn't familiar with attribution and sources that can be quoted verbatim. I will definitely read up on that. Budapest String Quartet

Hi Auntof6--

I notice you undid the links I had placed in the section titles for HMV/Victor and for Columbia - is this because links in section titles are considered bad form? I think it would be a good idea to put those links in somewhere - most people will know Columbia, but His Majesty's Voice might be a problem. And Victor was the US subsidiary of HMV. I didn't post any of the History section (and haven't even read it), but even if HMV or Victor are discussed there, and possibly linked, I suspect no one jumping down to Recordings will ever see it.

I'm not sure it was there already when you went through but you'll notice I have a ref footnote attached to the main Recordings section title. It sort of sticks out at you because I couldn't make it work other than in the same larger size print. But it pertains to both the HMV/Victor and the Columbia subsections, and it's pretty necessary information.

BTW I'm still working my way through adding to the Columbias, so there may be a bunch more added. It wasn't I who set up the page formatting, but I'm trying to stay as consistent as possible. I thought it was important to put in the italicized "(see HMV/Victor, above)" for the few Beethoven quartets done in England, because it's well known that the group made three complete sets of the Beethoven, and the HMVs missing from the Columbia section seemed strange and wrong. There won't be any more like that to be added.

Looking around now, I find this in the style manual: "Section names should not normally contain links, especially ones that link only part of the heading; they will cause accessibility problems." But "normally" implies exceptions may be made, and I don't know of a better place to put those two links for HMV/Victor and Columbia. (I'm not sure how they might cause an accessibility problem.) Hi. Yes, my changes were because of that practice. The tool I use, AutoWikiBrowser (AWB), automatically makes that kind of change. The reason I edited that article was that it was flagged has having headings that ended with colons, but I use AWB's ability to make "general fixes" as well, and that's why the links were removed. I see those links in the introductory paragraph; maybe that's sufficient, since there's also a guideline that any given item is usually linked only once in an article. I'm not sure exactly how links in headings cause accessibility problems, either: maybe it doesn't render properly in some browsers.
Yes, I looked at the AWB and saw that's what happened while you were taking out the colons. The links are indeed in the intro, but I'm thinking that people specifically interested in the recordings will just skip over all that and then be puzzled by "what can HMV/Victor possibly be?--never heard of it." The basic problem here is that someone interested in recordings just isn't going to bother with looking at anything else on the page, so it's a somewhat different situation from most WP articles. And that's why I inquired about the possibility of an exception. I thought about adding a line of text beneath the subsection heads, but that info is already up in the intro, and would be duplicated--far worse than just duplicating a link. So really, I'd prefer to put those two links back in.
As for the ref footnote, maybe you could just put it as a paragraph right below the heading it's attached to. Otherwise, it seems OK to me as it is, even though it looks a little funny.
I thought about that, and actually it's probably a better idea to put it directly under the main Recordings section head, so people will presumably know right away what the asterisks mean without having to look down at a footnote--which they won't anyway, just on principle. I'll work on trying to do something presentable with it. But my problem here is that I'm not being "neutral", because the Sony discography I'm working with is a real POS. I was hoping I could get away with guessing at their rationale in a footnote, but that's not going to work in the main text I shouldn't think. I'll work on it some more--maybe put the caution & explanation of "*" up under the head, and my speculations in a footnote? Not sure how to word it so that it's helpful but will also pass muster. And I need to make sure the book's author isn't blamed for Sony's many errors.
Question: "HMV" is "His Majesty's Voice" to you? I've always thought it was "His Master's Voice". It would be interesting if it were different in different countries.

URGENT PLEASE HELP

Hi Auntof6 I was wondering if you could help mediate a dispute between myself and a user called Anonymous on the "Institute for Policy Studies" Wikipage. He is blanking out all the contributions I am making on that site on the grounds that the sources are "from a blog" or "from biased sources" even you these "biased sources" come in the form of government websites, memorandums and established newspaper outlets. Henri Bertini: needs translating?

Hi Auntof6, I think maybe in your enthusiasm to keep our encyclopedia clean, you might have been a bit quick to tag this section as needing translating. The items in French are a list of Henri Bertini's works, and are the titles of his compositions. ASFAIK there is no policy requiring such titles to be translated. If I am wrong, please point me in the right MOS direction; However, if in doubt over such tagging and you are able to recognise the language, it often helps to first confer with a registered Wikipedia translator. I have removed the tags in case some trigger happy deletionist just delete the section when the tag's time limit expires. --Kudpung (talk) 06:59, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

You might be right about what the text is. Parts of it just looked more like narrative than titles, maybe because of the formatting (and I do speak French). I don't know, either, of any policy about translating titles. Go ahead and take the tags off if you want: they're still there in the sections I thought needed work. Did you try going to the Options tab and pointing to or checking/unchecking some of the options, then returning to the Start tab and hovering around the border of the Summary field or on the Summary dropdown button? I think the orphan tag could be removed. I use the AWB function that automatically tags articles as orphans if they have under a certain number of pages linking to them: I don't remember offhand what that number is but, in my opinion, this article now has enough. It would be better if they weren't all list articles (List of poets, List of essayists, etc.), but looking at just the number I think it's enough.
One other thing you might do: for any of the external links or references that aren't in English, indicate what language they're in. It would be better if they were in English, but it would be nice to indicate those that aren't. (Some editors think non-English references shouldn't be used at all.) For example, if one of them is in Macedonian, put "{{mk icon}} at the end of it. If you need any other languages, you can find them at List of ISO 639-1 codes -- use the code in the column marked "639-1". If you want, I can mark one of them for you as an example, if you tell me the language (I'm only guessing about the Macedonian!). You can see an example of what it looks like in the article President of the Republic of Macedonia if you look at the 3rd and 5th references at the bottom of the page.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog article

Thank you soooooo much for helping to clean up this article. I've spent the past couple of weeks revamping the existing article and feel I'm pretty much done, except for finishing the info box. Previous authors did the info box; I've never done one, so I need to research how to do one properly. I doubt I would have ever caught the errors you did. I truly appreciate the help in making this a better article!!! PS I haven't looked this up, but what is DMOZ - the info box at the beginning of the article?Bettymnz4 (talk) 19:35, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome, but I can't take all the credit. I use an editing tool called AutoWikiBrowser (AWB), and that tool found and fixed most of the errors for me. I found the article on a list of articles that have a category specified more than once. I edited the article with AWB to fix that, and AWB does other fixes at the same time.
I don't know exactly what DMOZ is, but it has something to do with the Open Directory Project (which I'm also unfamiliar with). You can read about that template at its documentation page.

That category was in there twice. I removed one, but it was still there because of the duplication. Armorial_of_the_Communes_of_Nord-4

Running the bot on Armorial pages mostly removes white space, which makes the source next to unreadable for editing. So I reverted your change, and moved the language link to the bottom, which SEEMED to be the only substantive change the bot did. David V Houston (talk) 01:18, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

The orphan tag means that no other Wikipedia articles link to this one. You can check what links to an article by going to the article and clicking on "What links here". Your IDN ccTLD move spree

Dear Auntof6, you have recently renamed Arabic top-level domains to their phonetic transcriptions (السعودية. to .alsaudiah, مصر. to .masr, and امارات. to .emarat). Although I am sure you were driven by good intentions, your actions demonstrate that you have abolutely no idea how internationalized domain names work. To put it bluntly, there ain't no such TLDs as .saudiah, .masr, or .emarat. If you click on http://الشيخ-محمد-بن-راشد.امارات/ in your browser, you get a website, but if you click on http://الشيخ-محمد-بن-راش.emarat/ you get an error message, and that is because .emarat is not a valid TLD.

I am going to undo your moves. If you are so allergic to Arabic that you insist on banishing it from the URLs of articles that are (ironically enough) about making the Arabic language fully usable for URLs, then at least rename them to something technically valid — i.e. punycode (.xn--mgbaam7a8h etc.) --Tetromino (talk) 05:46, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

I am not in the least allergic to Arabic or any other foreign language. I made the change per WP:MOS ("Article titles should conform to Wikipedia's Article titles, including Use English.") and WP:ENGLISH. I'm sorry if I used the wrong English, but in any case they should not be in Arabic. I assumed good faith combined with a lack of technical knowledge of the subject :) I did not realize that the English Wikipedia banned all use of non-Latin characters in titles (I do most of my work in the Russian Wikipedia, which is significantly more tolerant of foreign scripts). Unfortunately, naming TLD articles following a phonetic transcription results in invalid TLDs in the title that will be guaranteed to mislead the reader; naming them using punycode encoding results in titles that are accurate, but rather ugly. Do you by chance have any advice where I should discuss adding an exception for internationalized domain names to the general article title guideline — Wikipedia:WikiProject Internet, or perhaps somewhere else? --Tetromino (talk) 06:15, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'll admit to the lack of technical knowledge. Some of your phrasing was just a bit sharp.

Hardwood Ski and Biked - Deletion because it was not considered Notable

I created a page and it was deleted with the reason that it was not notable. This location is a mountain biking area and the facility will be where the 2015 Pan American Games mountain biking will be held. I'm not sure but the Pan Am Games are a notable event and if you would be able to help me better understand why the page was deleted it would be appreciated.

There are guidelines that describe what makes an organization/company notable for Wikipedia purposes. You can read about them at WP:COMPANY. The main idea is that the company should have been significantly covered in the press, not counting the company's own news releases, publications, advertising, etc. Does that help? --Auntof6 (talk) 15:52, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

My understanding is that there should be only enough description to allow a reader to distinguish between the different entries. (Per WP:DABMOS: "The description associated with a link should be kept to a minimum, just sufficient to allow the reader to find the correct link. In many cases, the title of the article alone will be sufficient and no additional description is necessary.") It seems to me that indicating the year should be enough for that. That may be correct, but many readers' knowledge of a particular storm is that "It was named John and it hit my area", and the year is useless to them. On the other hand some may know year of a storm, but not its name. Tropical cyclones are a slightly unusual subject and difficult to write about, so it's necessary to bend the rules a bit in order to make navigation and research easy for casual users. (Outdent) OK, I can see bending them a bit. Some of the descriptions were really too long, though -- 2 or 3 lines worth. I wonder if there's a way to shorten them but still leave more info. Maybe something like "Made landfall in X, Y, and Z", or "Threatened A, B, and C, but never made landfall". (With none of those countries being linked.) What do you think?

By the way, there is one good reason for not linking extra things on dab pages. Have you ever used the navigation popups? They have a function that displays all the links for a dab page so you can do a one-click disambiguation. That would work for me, and it seems like a good compromise. Re. the linking, I've never encountered that issue, as far as I recall, and while it sounds like it would be irritating, I would argue that the vast majority of readers do not use popups, so the benefits of linking complex terms outweigh the downsides. As far as the linking on dab pages, dab pages are specifically not intended to explain anything: they are purely for navigating between different articles with same or similar names. The "WP ck err" refers to error IDs from WikiProject Check Wikipedia. (That page is actually a bit out of date.) That is a project that scans Wikipedia articles for syntax and style errors, and stores results in a database. Editors can look here to find things that need addressing. Those specific error IDs are:
  • 7: Headlines all start with three "=" (partial BOT)
  • 19: Headlines start with one "=" (partial BOT)
  • 83: Headlines start with three "=" and later with level two
I combine those in the edit summary because they all have to do with heading levels and I work on multiple ones at the same time. If you think the edit summary isn't clear, I'm open to suggestions on how to make it clearer.
The policy about heading levels is in the DAB manual of style at Wikipedia:DABMOS#Organizing long lists by subject, in the second paragraph.

You're welcome! Take another look at my edit on that page: the song title was not italicized, it was put in quotation marks. (Quotation marks are used for song titles, episodes of TV series, and some other things. You can find more details about that at WP:MOSTITLE.) False positive report

The other day you submitted a false positive report because you found yourself unable to edit someone's talk page. If you have not already seen, it was due to an accident in the code of a particular edit filter which was quickly fixed by the MediaWiki software itself. The code has been reverted to the last good version and this should not happen again. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, however; if people hadn't reported it we wouldn't have known there was a problem.   • If the Italian article has sources for the data you need references for, you could use the same sources. English-language references are preferred in the English Wikipedia, of course, but sources in other languages are also used.
  • You could do a web search to see if you can find more resources.

Not sure, but it looks like it they might acted intentionally with malice by trying to sneak in false information under the guise of "constructive editing" (as opposed to generic vandalism). In everything I have read, I have never seen evidence of a 5th child. And while its true that each kid received $10 million it was only after a very lengthy court battle. However, the size of the estate at his death was around $400 million (not 200 million)...plus the money wasn't "donated" to the foundation, rather Mr. Moody's will stipulated the transfer of the bulk of the stocks/money to the foundation upon his death... An improvement

Thanks for your contributions to Timeline of the Turks (500-1300) and the Timeline of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm . But I had to improve your contribution to diasambiguate Laodicea. Because Laodicea is not Latakia. Laodicea (near Denizli) is in Turkey and Latakia is in Syria. The highway distance between the two is approximatelly 1,000 kilometres (620 mi). Happy editting.
