Comment/question: Hello BracketBot, sorry for the inconvenience, I was updating the page and I made a mistake with the syntax. I wanted to ask you something, when I put a reference of a magazine pubblication I have to provide also the link (If the magazine have the article also online) or an external link with the images (scanned) of the article? Thank you so much in advance

Knightsbridger (talk) 00:04, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

If the magazine has an online edition, a link to that article will be a great convenience to our reader. Scanned images of the article, however, are likely copyright violations and should not be linked to. Huon (talk) 19:14, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

@Czar: If you check the reference list after your edit, you'll find that the fourth reference is a big red warning that says: "Cite error: The named reference Mother_2 was invoked but never defined (see the help page)." @Df2397: The All Eyez on Me article actually has a "reception" section to which the AMG quote could be added, but I don't see how "easily the best production 2Pac's ever had on record" could be seen as "it is bad". Convex_hull_algorithms Convex_hull_algorithms

Diffs are between the latest and previous version modified by (in order): David Eppstein, Eric Ouellet

I'm considering that David Eppstein went really fast to removed things. He probably never took the time to read the reference given. If he would have done that, he would never removed what I added although anybody could have seen that as self promotion. It is not a self promotion when facts are there to prove that what it is written is right and it reflects the truth. David Eppstein had everything in hands to ensure that added contents was appropriate and right. I personally wrote to Timothy Chan and Pat Morin given my link to my article to ensure to have their feedback from them before writing anything in Wikipedia. I received no answers. My algorithm and my sample is absolutely what's best to prove and support the new idea behind it. I did comparison with Timothy Chan algorithm. But more over, my algorithm offer a lots more than that, it is absolutely a new way of finding the the Convex Hull. They all do an initial sort while I don't do any. I don't do in-place modification of source points, I create an independent set of points to create the results. IT is a brand new approach that reveal itself as more efficient in the same time. To DAVID EPPSTEIN: you have the code, you have the chart, you have everything to validate my words. What do want more ??? How could you write "Unreliable sources" when you have everything in hands... not just a paper that no one could verify... you have the code and a working executable that prove everything. My algorithm is a wind of fresh air and more, I also included a Multithreaded version which, in these days, is something I estimate as essentials. No one has that actually. My code is also a benchmark for people to verify my tells... What's missing !!! Although, you're not a programmer, you have access to the code and verify. Although not perfect, it is nicely structured and easy to understand with a very light knowledge of basic mathematics. I did all that for the advancement of the science and for the community. Everybody should be able to benefits of my algorithm because it is simply the best for a majority of people (see advantages/cons). Wikipedia is the best door to let the world know about it. Yes, you could see it as Self Promotion if you wish, but what's bad in that, it is not only to promote myself I did not make a personal page to show my face in Wikipedia, I did the minimum to ensure people will have the chance to benefits of that algorithm.

I am: ouellet.eric@ireq.ca I leave you my email at work and hope you will at least take the time to explain me your decision because I really don't understand. Thanks you.

Eric Ouellet - Wally (talk) 13:45, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

You may want to check out Wikipedia's policy on original research. Wikipedia is not a "door to let the world know about something"; it only covers what has already been written about in reliable published sources such as textbooks or peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Your article was published on CodeProject, which is not subject to meaningful peer review and would probably be considered self-published. If you have developed a new, vastly improved algorithm, you should publish a paper in one of the major computer science journals, not on Wikipedia. Huon (talk) 21:06, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: I was notified of breaking the syntax of a link 13 sections above where I was editing. I didn't undo anything, and haven't edited that area in ages, yet it said the diff above caused a syntax break that I fixed here. I'm mostly just perplexed as to why BracketBot thought I broke this, as it was broken over a month ago, with about twenty edits from then to the one BracketBot notified me about.

Quick note, I've never had any issues with BracketBot prior to right now, and it's notified me countless times of little slip-ups. Thank you for this extremely helpful bot!

Corvoe (speak to me) 11:40, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

This is a false positive, but one that will be very difficult to avoid. You edited the page, you added a closing curly bracket without a corresponding opening bracket (to fix the table), and afterwards the bot thought were more mismatched brackets on the page than before (because one of the closing brackets from the broken link was no longer "matched" to the opening bracket from the table). Thus the bot notified you. Something like this may happen when a page has multiple bracket errors that, in the bot's eyes, cancel each other out - fixing one will be interpreted as causing the remaining one. 68.97.173.205 (talk) 18:19, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

The orange "You have a new message" notification is just that - a notification that someone else left a note at your talk page (in this case, an automated message left by ClueBot NG, an anti-vandalism bot). You can get rid of the notification by clicking on it - that will take you to your talk page so you can read the message, and it will mark the message as read so that you will no longer get notified about it. If you get notified again, that will only be when another message has been left.
The main problem with your edit to the McDonnell Douglas YC-15 article is that you did not cite any sources - how can our readers tell that your numbers are better than the ones they replaced? Please provide a reliable source so others can verify your changes.
BracketBot also is an automated program, one that notifies users about possible bracket mismatches. In the edit BracketBot notified you about, you added a closing parenthesis without a corresponding opening parenthesis, a rather minor problem which you had quickly fixed yourself. I'm sorry about the confusion. Huon (talk) 17:02, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Ttaylor80 (talk) 17:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

@Ttaylor80: BracketBot does not edit articles, it's an automated program that notifies users of possibly mismatched brackets. John of Reading has fixed the reference problems. However, you should take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest. Editing an article about yourself all too often is problematic because it's difficult to maintain a neutral point of view when writing about oneself. Often it's a better idea to suggest an edit on the article's talk page and let uninvolved editors decide on its appropriateness. Huon (talk) 17:02, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

@Eagle4000: The default character for that purpose is either just a space or an asterisk. Compare for example Category:High school sports in the United States whose subcategories use both methods. Unfortunately Wikipedia requires published sources, not personal testimony. You did add such sources, but references should be provided "inline" so our readers can easily check which source supports which of the article's statements. In short, the <ref>...</ref> code should be added to the article text itself, right after the statement that source is cited for, not in the references section (which ideally should only contain the {{reflist}} template that will display the footnotes created by the <ref>...</ref> tags. For example, "He is possibly best known for playing the role of L.P. Everett on the HBO series Treme" - says who? Huon (talk) 02:10, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: I tried one more time to edit Specifications on McDonnell_Douglas_YC-15. I thought I would give more data and be more informative.

This was a mistake because no matter how you add data you get a distracting orange bar stating a new message on last edit. The only way to get rid of the bar is to remove the added data; making for a less informative article.

What I did was to go to another article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-5_Galaxy, to the specifications. I hit edit, then copied the same material that was there onto a word file.

   |range main=2,400 nmi
   |range alt=2,760 mi, 4,440 km
   |range more=with a 263,200 lb (119,400 kg) payload

The last line from this copy I used as it was used in this article with the new data added.

   |range main=2,995 mi
   |range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km
   |range more=with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload

After saving the page, it appeared like this: Range: 2,995 mi (2,600 nm, 4,810 km) with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload. This is the way it should appear.

But this caused me to get the orange bar. The instruction page stated:

· item doesn't apply, like capacity, leave it blank. For additional lines, end your alt units with )</li> and start a new, fully formatted line with <li> · |range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km )with 38,000-pound payload

So, I followed the line, "|range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km )with 38,000-pound payload" (the ) was red indicating to use it), and I did this precisely. What resulted was:Range: 2,995 mi (2,600 nm, 4,810 km)) with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload. Notice the double end parenthesis.

Next I tried, "For additional lines, end your alt units with )<?li> and start a new, fully formatted line with <li>".

   |range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km )</li>
   <li>|range more=with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload

What resulted was: (with a bullet at the beginning of each line)

   Range: 2,995 mi (2,600 nm, 4,810 km)
   ) with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload

Then I tried:

   |range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km </li>
   <li>|range more=with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload

The result was: (with a bullet at the beginning of each line)

   Range: 2,995 mi (2,600 nm, 4,810 km)
   ) with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload

Then I tried:

   |range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km </li>
   <li>with a {{convert|38000|lb|kg|abbr=on}} payload

What resulted was: (with a bullet at the beginning of each line)

   Range: 2,995 mi (2,600 nm, 4,810 km
   with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload)

Notice the end parenthesis after payload. With the additional end parenthesis being added, it makes it look wrong, besides getting the orange bar.

So following the messaged instructions did no good, except to give it an inaccurate look and an orange bar.

While following what was done in another article gets the right look, but an orange bar. The only way to get rid of the orange bar is to remove the |range more=with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload and remove the necessary data of with a 38,000 lb (17,000 kg) payload.

This process and the writing of these messages cost a great deal of time that I could have used doing work and research. It makes giving information that adds to the article, not worth the effort.

It also appears that you do not want any data added by the run around that one gets when they add data by using and following an example of how another article is structured, with the article getting no orange bar orange bar, and get a orange bar saying an error was committed on a following page, as well as following instructions given on that following page to having the page look incorrect and getting an orange bar.

All of this leads one to the questions: How does one add data without an orange bar appearing?,Why is the structure used in one article not right for others? Do you want additional, informative, completing data added, or not? 68.97.173.205 (talk) 23:22, 21 June 2014 (UTC)·

Orange message notification example
Just so we're talking about the same thing: The "orange bar" was something like the image I added here, only at the very top of whatever Wikipedia page you looked at, right? Such notifications are not directly caused by your edits, but by someone leaving a note at your talk page.
In this edit of yours you added a mismatched closing parenthesis at 16:50, 19 June 2014 (UTC). Ten minutes later, at 17:01, 19 June 2014 (UTC), BracketBot left you a message about the potential issue, causing the orange notification to appear when you next reloaded a Wikipedia page. Unrelatedly, the very minute the bot left you the message, you fixed the bracket issue it had notified you about. So it seems likely that you first saw the notification after adding the code that worked on the C-5 Galaxy article to the McDonnell Douglas YC-15 article (where it worked just as well), but that's pure coincidence. Fixing the bracket issue (or in fact doing any edits whatsoever to an article) will not remove the notification about the message on your talk page; only looking at your talk page (for example by following the liink within that notification) will.
BracketBot's note on your talk page listed the mismatched parentheses on the article at the time the bot wrote the message. The parentheses in red are not ones the bot thinks you should use (it's simply not smart enough to make suggestions), but ones it thinks are mismatched and may be problematic, such as the one you had added in your edit of 16:50 (and which you apparently fixed before seeing the bot's message). When the bot thinks there's a problem, it lists all mismatched brackets on the page, not just the ones added in the edit that summoned the bot. In particular:
  • item doesn't apply, like capacity, leave it blank. For additional lines, end your alt units with )</li> and start a new, fully formatted line with <li>
If you edit the page, you'll find that this mismatched bracket is hidden within a HTML comment with instructions on how to use the {{Aircraft specifications}} template; it's not visible to the reader. I believe the bot is smart enough not to notify users when mismatched brackets within comments are added, but once it notifies them, it really lists them all, including those that are commented out. I am not quite sure what those instructions refer to, but I don't think they were relevant to the issue at hand.
  • |range alt=2,600 nm, 4,810 km )with 38,000-pound payload
This was the parenthesis in your 16:50 edit, the one that summoned the bot and the one you fixed in your 17:01 edit.
So in short, this was a case of unfortunate coincidences and miscommunication. Copying working code from another page will work (and, as you noted above, did work), it will (usually) not cause a bot to leave you a message, and it definitely will not directly cause the "You have new messages" notification.
That said, as I mentioned the last time, you should provide reliable sources for your changes so our readers can verify that your numbers are correct and you aren't just making them up (unfortunately some people do so). See WP:Referencing for beginners on how to easily cite your sources.
Again, I'm sorry for the confusion, and I hope the above explanation clarifies the issue. Huon (talk) 02:10, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Your edit has been reverted because it was of only marginal relevance to the article's topic if any, did not cite any reliable sources, and seemed more designed to promote the artist than to provide encyclopedic coverage of the genesis narrative. Huon (talk) 19:02, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: I was notified that there was an error, which appears to be that a source was now abandoned. When I went to "fix" it, there was no demonstrable change being applied. Wouldn't it make sense to have the "fix" be commenting out the source, or removing it altogether?

czar  00:29, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

ReferenceBot isn't smart enough to suggest a specific fix (which could also be re-adding an accidentally removed source, for example). It only notifies humans and gives them links so they can easily fix it - but they'll still have to determine themselves how to fix it. Huon (talk) 18:28, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

@Sheilaarora: Are you aware of Wikipedia's guideline on conflicts of interest? My advice would be to suggest specific changes on the article's talk page and to provide reliable sources to back up the changes you propose. Huon (talk) 18:28, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

@Jiminycricket55: This page is the talk page of the operator of BracketBot, an automated program that notifies users about possibly mismatched brackets. The bot notified you about a missing parenthesis back in March; that has long since been fixed. More urgent may be the notification about a problem with File:Portrait of Dr. Shlomo Kalish.tif, where a copyright email supposedly wa sent more than two months ago, but hasn't been received. Comment/question: After getting another orange bar, and giving another post(which I had change to this), there came up a page showing an answer to my questions. I did not understand that this was what the orange bar was informing me about, due to it saying first: Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to McDonnell Douglas YC-15 may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

This lead me to believe that it was informing me of an error again, not an answer. I thank you Huon, whoever you are.

I am letting you, Huon, know I would not make up information (the ones that do should be hung by their thumbs).

The range came from http://www.theaviationzone.com/factsheets/yc15_specs.asp. The deleted information on service ceiling is from http://www.boeing.com/boeing/history/mdc/yc-15.page. Both were verified by books (I have over 100 on planes alone, and am unwilling, at this time, to go back and find which ones) that I have .

Also, http://thelexicans.wordpress.com/2013/04/23/mcdonnell-douglas-yc-15-part-1/, has a good diagram of engine/flap flow and a cutaway of the YC-15 that is very good, except I do not want to infringe any copyright rules by installing them on Wikipedia. 68.97.173.205 (talk) 15:26, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

OK, thanks for providing the sources. I'll add them to the article if you haven't done so already. The engine/flap flow diagram would probably indeed have copyright issues, and it would probably be better-suited for the blown flap article anyway. Huon (talk) 18:28, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello BracketBot . I am new in editing an article in Wikipedia. I thought I had done it well, after reading the instructions. So sorry to have caused any situation. I tried to correct some info, that was not accurate and add the most recent ones. When the name Sonia Noemi Gonzalez comes up in a Google search for ex, the date of birth is seen immediately, and it's not correct. Every detail that was changed or added by me is correct. I added the most recent work in the creative field too, that I thought was important,as a Self Published book written by Sonia Noemi "El Camino De La Serpiente." Apparently I did not do it correctly, but it was not my intention to do any vandalism. Thanks for your interest in maintaining the highest standards in something so wonderful as Wikipedia. I really do hope the information I changed or added can be permitted to be in my story, though now I don't know how to revert what TRLovejoy did to fix it. Nemigonza (talk) 18:09, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

You're aware that the footnotes you added say, "wrong content"? That doesn't really inspire confidence in the accuracy of the content. What you should do is provide reliable published sources that are independent of you, such as articles about you published by newspapers or reputable magazines. I see no indication that you are notable by Wikipedia's standards, and the content youb added wasn't any more verifiable than what you removed. Thus I've proposed the article for deletion. @Zz11765: At the moment there's no indication Bienne is notable enough for an article by Wikipedia's standards. The sources either are not the reliable third-party sources Wikipedia content should be based on, or they mention her only in passing without confirming our article's content. The incorrect birthdate was just one example; the rest of the content largely isn't verifiable either. Thus I'll propose the article for deletion. Huon (talk) 22:52, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

OFTedit (talk) 16:52, 30 June 2014 (UTC) Hi BracketBot,

thanks for finding my mistakes ( on brackets - nomes est omen) on the Hara (Tanden) page. I find the editing format of Wiki very tedious, because one can't see the wood (text) for the trees (references). I have to add something in anyway and, in the process, will mend the broken syntax. As your seem to be highly knowledgable, I wonder if you could help me turn this page, which - as I understand - is not an article proper, into one. The title as it is (Hara (Tanden)) seems to have been determined by the fact that in its present form, it needs to be distinguished from other "non-articles" on or references to "Hara". The basic entry seems to have been started by someone from the martial arts community and very small. I don't think they would object to having it up-edited in this way, as I kept their main statements. I would prefere the title of the article-to-be to just say Hara. The intro and the list of content can take care of the reference to the Tanden/martial arts part, which reflects the original entry. If you cannot do it yourself or ask someone in charge, maybe you could point me towards anyone or explain to me - in very simple language, please - how to do it myself. The HELP page on the topic is not very helpful to me, because it has too much Wiki insider lingo. I would also be grateful for a hint on categories.

Many thanks for all help

OFTedit (talk) 16:52, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

@OFTedit: Hara (tanden) is as "proper" an article as they come. When there are multiple meanings for one and the same term, such as Hara, we create a disambiguation page that lists them all, and the individual articles are distinguished by a parenthetical qualifier in the article title, like "(tanden)" There's no reason to expect that people looking for "Hara" will overwhelmingly be interested in the Japanese medical term and not the name, the Biblical character, the band, the film or any of the other meanings listed at the disambiguation page; thus there's no reason why this article should get pride of place.
Categories are a method of sorting articles by essential, defining characteristics of the topic. Like article titles categories on Wikipedia don't use title case, but unlike article titles, category names tend to use the plural (thus we have Category:Martial arts terms, not Category:Martial arts term or Category:Martial Arts terms). Usually categories are only created when there's a sufficient number of articles to be so categorized; for example, I doubt we have enough pages on Japanese anatomical terms to make a category worthwhile. When you're looking for appropriate categories for a page, it often helps to check articles on similar topics for categories. In this case I've added the categories "Abdomen" and "Japanese alternative medicine" and removed all the redlinked ones. I've also fixed the bracket issue. Huon (talk) 23:37, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Some of those were false positives; BracketBot keeps an eye on "<>" because they're used in HTML tags that, if broken, can easily disrupt large parts of a page. If they're used as "less than" and "greater than", as they were in the uremia article, the bot mistakenly thinks there may be a problem. You already fixed the others; thanks for that. if you could get back to me then we can email communicate as it would be much easier

many thanks

BracketBot is an automated program that isn't smart enough to fix problems; it only notifies human editors so they can take a look. I have fixed the reference (and I've rewritten the sentence so it's more in line with what the source had to say); references must end with a </ref> tag, not with another <ref> tag. You may want to check out WP:Referencing for beginners on how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes. Regarding the amendment of articles, the way you did it for Flowers - by citing a reliable source - is the way it should be done. Huon (talk) 01:07, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm trying to add my name to the list of Broadway performers who appeared in the Palm Springs Follies and I need help. I have legitimate credits but I am not listing myself correctly. Can you help me? It's difficult for me to understand. Terri Homberg Olsen‎ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kioto1936 (talkcontribs) 14:08, 2 July 2014 (UTC)‎

You will note that for every other featured performer mentioned in that list we have either a Wikipedia article or a reliable source such as a newspaper article or a published book. The IBDB, which comes with quite an impressive disclaimer, is not such a reliable source, and it doesn't say you were a featured performer of that show anyway. I should also repeat what S. Rich said at your talk page about writing about yourself - that's usually not a good idea due to the inherent conflict of interest. Huon (talk) 18:27, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

So this is original research that was deleted at the Italian Wikipedia because it was deemed too promotional? Why then should the English Wikipedia have that content?
Wikipedia content should be based on reliable sources that are independent of the subject, such as travel guides or newspaper articles. 98.235.185.13 (talk) 06:08, 8 July 2014 (UTC)I apologize for the editing mistakes. Although I am certain of the premise but don't want to make the page an Orwell fan page. Although I think Hemingway readers might be interested in knowing why the book may have departed slightly from the truth. Those who are fans of Stalin today might disagree with my premise, but I am sure that what I have said is correct, although feel free to edit. I have a wonderful copyeditor who is my boss, as in "the boss of the house" and she might be able to clean up the page when I am employed again and she has free time to devote to it. But I am and would be a terribly copyeditor although my ideas are generally sound.

That would require reliable sources such as mainstream historians or literary scientists explicitly discussing the book. We cannot base content merely on what you are sure of if there's no way for others to verify it. I have thus reverted your edits. Huon (talk) 19:45, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

@DHeyward: On second thought, since we're dealing with living persons and potentially libelous content, WP:BLP would apply even to the test case page, and references should be in order. It might be a better idea to use dead criminals as test cases unless a feature needs to be tested that will only occur in BLPs. Huon (talk) 17:21, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Other bots (i.e. DPL bot) create more descriptive headers, such as this edit. May I suggest you code BracketBot to do the same?

Ivanvector (talk) 15:29, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

That heading, with the association with warnings, was chosen deliberately - the idea was that if a bracket issue is caused by vandalism, vandal-fighters might more easily see the BracketBot message and might decide to check out and fix the issue. DPL bot is much less likely to be triggered by vandalism. The BracketBot offers the option to switch to daily headers if you prefer, though - see User:BracketBot#Daily Instead of Monthly Headers. That heading follows DPL bot's style: Example. Huon (talk) 16:30, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

I somehow deleted or added a bracket.. I received the error message of "List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page". Computer programmer here so I know how critical brackets are; however, there is no debug option to show where the error lies..

I tried to comment out notes about my changes with 4 tildas at the beginnings of paragraphs that were notes, but there was another message referring to the four tildas being a signature... Dmanhart1 (talk) 17:04, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

HELP!!!!!

@Dmanhart1: Four tiles (~~~~) indeed turn into a signature; that should be used to sign messages on talk pages (such as here), not in articles. If you want to comment about content or changes, the article has a dedicated talk page for that purpose. Editorial comments should never be included in the article itself. Worse, you faked numbers. According to a 2011 Pew Research poll, 68% of Americans say "yes" when asked the basic question "Do you believe in God?" - that's just plain wrong. As the article said before your edit, more than 9 in 10 Americans asked that question in the Pew Research poll said "yes". Misrepresenting sources in that way is not acceptable. I get the impression that your point of view on this topic inhibits your ability to edit neutrally.
Regarding the brackets, there's a "show" option at the top right of that "List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page", which will expand the collapsed box and show the list. Two are false positives, a part of a quote that contains only an opening parenthesis and a "<" that's used to mean "less than"; the third was caused by your edit, which I have reverted due to the problems noted above. Comment/question: Please note that there is a broken link in the #70 citation. I had nothing to do with that broken link. I made no edits to that link, nor the paragraph where it is cited.. My only intent is to update the poll numbers of the religiously affiliated to the latest poll numbers (using 2012/2013 polls instead of 2004 polls). I believe the trend in the rising numbers of "religiously unaffiliated" over the past decade should be noted, as it is a major trend. I only included respected sources form the Pew Research Center and UPI/Harris polls, provided the exact links, and quoted, verbatim, the articles from those sources. I didn't even change "one third" to "1/3" in one article (which used bad form by using specific percentages in the other demographics of that paragraph instead of a numerical percentage when it came to the under 30 category).

The updated poll results from 2004 to 2012 and 2013 should be updated on this page as it reflects the changing demographics of the religiously unaffiliated.

This would be exactly like saying only 38 percent of americans support gay marriage (per a 2004 poll), instead of updating the numbers to reflect that a poll conducted in May 2014 found that 55% of americans now support gay marriage (per your Wikipedia website).

Current accurate nonpartisan poll data from respectable sources should be reflected on Wikipedia, as it is the most trusted website on the internet. Dmanhart1 (talk) 14:24, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

I think this is a lot more tricky: The portal at random transcludes one of Portal:Fictional characters/Film/1 through Portal:Fictional characters/Film/4, and the first of those had a broken reference. I'd guess that when the bot checked your edit to the portal, the "before" version transcluded something else, and the "after" version transcluded the broken reference - thereby giving the appearance that your edit caused it. I have deleted Step Up All In(soundtrack) which was lacking a space between "In" and "(soundtrack)". Step Up All In (soundtrack)is nominated for deletion and will likely be turned into a redirect to the main film article. That album hasn't even been released yet, and your past edits to the article have included promotional, untrue claims. You're clearly unable to maintain a neutral point of view when writing about that album. Huon (talk) 15:08, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

What you added to the article in this edit was copy-pasted from the New York Times, a copyright violation. This is another copyright violation, this time from France-Antilles.fr, and... it's French. This is the English Wikipedia, and articles should be written in English. Even without the language issue, however, that content should be removed on copyright grounds alone. Also, the persondata at the end of the article is supposed to provide machine-readable information about the subject of the article, not about his PR team. You should definitely take a look at WP:COI, our guideline on conflicts of interest, and the terms of use, especially the part about paid editing, which lists the appropriate methods to disclose such paid editing. For now I'll revert your changes, but leave a link to the NYT article. You should summarize in your own words what that review says about Dédé Saint Prix, or better yet, suggest specific changes to the article on its talk page and let uninvolved editors decide about their appropriateness; the {{request edit}} template is designed to highlight such talk page requests. You seem to be misinterpreting the bot messages. BracketBot notified you because when you added the YouTube video, you added an opening parenthesis, but no corresponding closing parenthesis. XLinkBot, an entirely unrelated bot, notified you because YouTube links are almost never appropriate for Wikipedia articles and XLinkBot removed it (and in doing so also fixed the parenthesis mismatch). To be blunt, highlighting your own YouTube video on the Hail Mary article smacks of self-promotion. --IseeEwe (talk) 20:18, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

@IseeEwe: Actually there's a syntax error precisely where BracketBot said it is: There's a closing parenthesis after the British strength without a corresponding opening strength. Giving a date for that strength would also be helpful; I don't think there were a million troops of the British Empire fighting in Burma in 1941. In fact, that number sounds like a grand total of British Empire troops that ever were present in that theatre of war, combined, not like their strength at any given time. Thus it's not really comparable to the other strength entries, which are snapshots at specific times. Huon (talk) 20:46, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
I did not see it. Did you fix it? Thanks. This article is a general overview to the whole campaign, not to a particular season, battle or year. The number provided corresponds to the service numbers with the British forces serving in this campaign. 14th army alone had 260,000 troops etc.. see the references. More can be provided. The other national troop numbers should be revised similarly. As it stands using numbers from different years is comparing apples to oranges.--IseeEwe (talk) 21:08, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

None of those sources, including the ones in the "external links" section, satisfy the three basic criteria a good source should meet: They're either not indepenent of Trevena, or they are not reliable, or - this goes for People and US Weekly - they do not cover Trevena in any detail. These sources do not suffice to establish that Trevena is notable enough for an article in the first place - basically, the most reliable sources only cover him as "the guy Laura Vandervoort is engaged to", which isn't really a claim to notability. On the other hand, claims to notability such as "modeled in major campaigns" or "wrote music with many major Artists" are not based on what the reliable sources report. Thus I will nominate the article for deletion. Huon (talk) 18:59, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

@KevinBree: My advice would be to take a look at the tutorial, maybe just the cheatsheet, and at WP:Referencing for beginners; the video at that page explains how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes for references. And that's the current article's main weakness: It does not cite any sources. Wikipedia content must be based on reliable published sources; your personal knowledge is not enough. Sources need not be available online; you can cite the newspapers and magazines your collection of press cuttings comes from (provide the name of the newspaper, the publication date, the page number, the title of the article, the author and so on, and our readers can look it up in a library archive). Articles that do not cite their sources might be tagged for deletion. Huon (talk) 20:19, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

That article cites not a single independent source. While Hall may well meet our notability criteria, that article desperately needs work. For example, there's no need to list his publications unless they're highly cited works that others have discussed in some detail - and then we should summarize what others had to say about them, not just list them. The biographical content should not be based merely on his own website and his employer's. Huon (talk) 21:04, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

@Billy Hathorn: You didn't, but Teblick did. That's why the bot left the notification at User talk:Teblick, not at your talk page. Teblick fixed the issue with this edit. Huon (talk) 14:37, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: The preview option is not working for me. A Wikipedia page shows up but then quickly (0.5 seconds) disappears & is replaced by the edit page upon which I just made the changes. I am using Chrome (auto-updated) on an HP ProBook S-series running Windows 7 Home Premium. As you can see from the change history I submitted a second edit to fix the unmatched bracket. I am a new contributor.

@Jimbitz: This is far beyond the purview of the bot operator. You may want to ask at WP:Village pump (technical); maybe the people over there can help you. Huon (talk) 14:37, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: Actually mostly information. Thank you very much for leaving things as they were and enabling me to finish my painstaking edit at my leisure. Internet or not, I am usually quite pernickety about brackets, but of course in this particular case they were of quite vital importance. As I remember the situation, your bot intervened while I was in the middle of what I was doing with that sentence, and my mistaken assumption that some Besserwisser was about to destroy my edit made me simply abandon everything in despair. Can you tell me whether or not AV was ordained to the priesthood and even to the episcopate? The reason I ask is that the best-known of Cöllner Churfürsten, Clemens August geb. v. Bayern, took years after taking up the job here even to be ordained priest, and it was only under strong pressure from the Pope that that took place – well out of the way in the parish church of Markt Schwaben! You mention that his third successor never married. (CA never did either, but he maintained a mistress in Schloß Brühl.) If AV did take orders, it might be an idea to look for a picture of him in some variant of ecclesiastical regalia rather than in k. k. officer’s uniform, becoming though the one you have used is. Congratulations on the page in general. My quotation of the original French title of the Reichstag committee report is from the Recueil de traités, which is the nearest I could get to an original. The original of the Act as signed by Francis II in 1803 ought to be filed somewhere but I have no idea where (Ratisbon? Vienna?). Get in touch with any such information and of course with anything you’d like to dispute. NB Mozart refers to Max Franz in his letters usually as <Se. Churfürstl. Durchlaucht v. Cölln> o. Ä. BracketBot is an automated program that looks for mismatched brackets and notifies the users who created the mismatch about the potential problem. It does so without understanding what the articles are about. Personally I hadn't heard of Anton Victor before today and cannot help you either. Since Anton Victor reigned as Prince-Bishop of Münster from 1801 to 1803, I would expect him to have indeed been a bishop. However, since he spent much of his life as an Austrian official, for example as viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia, the image of him wearing an Austrian uniform seems more appropriate.
