Managing a conflict of interest

Information icon Hello, 95.67.102.245. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Draft:Tigran Maytesian, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:12, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits, consider creating an account for yourself so you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

Hello Justlettersandnumbers,

I appreciate your concern about compliance with Wikipedia policies but I have no close connection to Mr.Tigran Maytesian or any other people, places or things in the article to be accused of any conflict of interest by you or any other editor. The information in the article is provided with a neutral point of view as pure facts with unbiased approach and it has no flattering or disparaging content. I am acting here as volunteer with no financial interest and no compensation from anyone. So, I don't think you personally have a right in finding fault with me for contributing to Wikipedia. Moreover, I don't believe I need to make any excuses for my sincere and free of charge, voluntary contribution to the Wikipedia list of living classical violinists with the information about an internationally recognized and prominent person really worth to be placed there.

I am certainly familiarizing myself with the content policies and guidelines you mentioned above and I appreciate your advice to exercise great caution when creating or editing. I am grateful to all concerned reviewers, editors and administrators, their recommendations will be very helpful in making improvements to the draft of the article.

Best regards, 95.67.102.245 (talk) 22:14, 8 February 2015 (UTC)95.67.102.245.[reply]

I'm sorry, but there seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding here. I simply cannot reconcile your statement on this page, "I have no close connection to Mr.Tigran Maytesian", with the statement you made here, "I am the web content manager of www.tigranmaytesian.com". That website is Tigran Maytesian's website; if you are the content manager of it, how can you not be connected to Maytesian? Whether or not you receive payment for that work makes a difference to your obligations here (if you do, you are obliged to declare that fact), but not to anything else. According to your own declaration, you appear to have a clear conflict of interest; you should not do anything which gives the impression that you are promoting Maytesian here. However, you don't have to take my word for it; if you wish, I can take this to a noticeboard where it will be reviewed by other editors. I'm confident that they will tell you the same thing, though.
We have more than four million articles, many of them about musicians; why not contribute to one of those, if that is your interest? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 23:07, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Justlettersandnumbers,

Actually, I have already explained you my voluntary role and unbiased intentions in creating an article – see my second message written at 12:02, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Tatiana of the user talk: Diannaa (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Diannaa&oldid=646026787#Tatiana_Antonchenko_2 and lines 204 and 225 in the user talk at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Diannaa&diff=646267284&oldid=646026787 ). I am not a paid employee or a family member / friend of Mr. Tigran Maytesian. I have no personal connection to him to promote him commercially and no financial interest from contributing to Wikipedia in this case.

Actually, I had no idea of Mr. Tigran Maytesian until I visited his concert two years ago and learnt more about this outstanding musician and scientist from international media. As Wikipedia contained no information about such a prominent person, I wanted to contribute to the Wikipedia list of living classical violinists on my own initiative, without any expectations of any reward or recognition from his or anyone else’s side. I started to create an article in 2013 having no personal connection to Mr. Tigran Maytesian. Since that time, the draft has been amended several times as commented by other editors.

Until 2015, there were no claims or threats of deletion for an unauthorized usage of information. To create this article I certainly had to use information from his website and other sources. Recently on February 5, 2015 my article draft was deleted by the editor Diannaa on account of the copyright infringement of Tigran Maytesian's website. I contacted Mr. Tigran Maytesian using his official contact information and asked him to give me an authorization to use his website content for Wikipedia purposes. As a website copyright holder he agreed and provided me with the above authorization with the declaration of consent sent to Wikipedia OTRS team.

In this declaration of consent, my name was indicated with regard to my right to use his website content. Therefore, I explained the editor Diannaa that I have the right to use the website content provided to me by Mr. Tigran Maytesian. It was later proved by OTRS team ticket for authorization. The access to my article draft was officially restored for me to edit and resubmit the improved article.

I admit that I casually and unconsciously made this misinterpretation of my role naming myself the website content manager, although I am a volunteer on a free of charge basis but not his employee or any acquaintance of him. Actually, at that time I could find no other suitable term to explain my authorization to use the website content other than saying that I am a website content manager. Sorry for this embarrassing mistake but I did not know how else I could specify that I have received the right to use information from his website. It is very frustrating that my statement at here was misinterpreted by you as I have no personal or professional connection to the subject of this article. If you have doubts to my role here, please name what evidence of my honest and voluntary contribution I need to provide you to convince you that your accusations are unfair and your claims sound rather offensively to me as disparaging my intentions and me personally.

With regard to your suggestion of my contributing to one of other four million articles in Wikipedia, I was thinking of doing this in the future but first I would like to finalize what I initiated with this article. I feel very frustrated that my two-year efforts and time spent for contributing to Wikipedia are being neglected and disparaged by your comments. If authors of the Wikipedia article are really free to choose the topic of their article, why, to your mind, I cannot make an article about this person but instead have to contribute to other musicians you name???? Is it an obligation or a free choice of topic or creativity??? Does that mean that the articles placed in Wikipedia are created not on a voluntary basis but actually as invited contributions and you offer me to promote them???

If Wikipedia editors are really a community of volunteers, I hope that they support and guide instead of making obstacles and outcasting such volunteers like me who spend efforts and time with a sole purpose of contributing to the Wikipedia encyclopedic database.

Dear Justlettersandnumbers, I respect your volunteer job of an editor and your desire to exclude any discrepancies and incompliance, but I hope for your unbiased attitude to me as an author who receives no financial compensation or interest from the subject of the article.

I would appreciate if you withdraw your unfair charges and claims (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_talk:Tigran_Maytesian ). They are the obstacle that makes my free contribution to Wikipedia senseless and all my further efforts are now useless and discouraged. Moreover, I appeal to you to quit this boundless and unfruitful discussion but instead to spend our time and efforts on collaborating in contributing to Wikipedia bank of knowledge. I highly respect your expertise and your valuable experience at Wikipedia

I hope for your understanding and sincere support and will appreciate if you exercise friendly attitude to and helpful guiding of such newcomers like me.

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes, 95.67.102.245 (talk) 13:43, 9 February 2015 (UTC)95.67.102.245[reply]

Dear editor (t) Josve05a (c) ,

It goes about Articles for creation: Tigran Maytesian. I have got your notification at my User’s Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:95.67.102.245#Your_submission_at_Articles_for_creation:_Tigran_Maytesian_.28February_20.29) that my submission not been accepted because it included copyrighted information, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. Actually, it seems to be either some awful mistake of yours or some strange personal attack from your side on my volunteer contribution.

First, there is no copyright violation from my side as there has been received a permission from the copyright holder to release this material under both the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license and the GNU Free Documentation License. Both licenses may be used. Evidence of this has been confirmed and stored by OTRS volunteers, under ticket number 2015020610023567. I have permission to use copyrighted work (information from http://www.tigranmaytesian.com) as it goes in the Draft talk: This template is used by approved volunteers dealing with the Wikimedia Open Ticket Request System (OTRS) after receipt of a clear statement of permission at permissions-en wikimedia.org. ) (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_talk:Tigran_Maytesian)

Second, you claim that my article submission to Articles for Creation (i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Tigran_Maytesian) has been reviewed and has not been accepted. If so, please explain me why the Draft:Tigran_Maytesian is still among the submissions currently (i.e. on February 20, 2015) waiting for review as a Pending AfC submission (see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Pending_AfC_submissions&pagefrom=P201502100944%0AA.+Testoni+S.p.A.#mw-pages)???? How should I understand your statement then???

Moreover, the AFC notification at the bottom of my article submission says that "If the submission is declined, then the reason will be posted here" (that means at the Draft:Tigran_Maytesian page but not on my User’s page!!!). The Wikipedia AFC notification further goes “Please check back here (at the Draft:Tigran_Maytesian page!!!) later to see the outcome of your request.” Tell me, please, how shall I understand this ambiguity, discrepancy between the Wikipedia notification and your statement???

To avoid further misunderstanding, please be aware that as a contributor to this article I am a volunteer with no financial interest or personal relation to the subject of the article, i.e. to Mr. Tigran Maytesian. I have never declared a personal or professional connection to the subject of this article. I have placed there reliably sourced information with the neutral point of view. Any accusations of the conflict of interest, autobiography or as you stated, copyright violation, with regard to my volunteer contribution are groundless and unfair. Should you need any proof of my volunteer, fully free and unbiased contribution and of my entitlement to use this copyrighted information, please, tell me what evidence I need to provide you to prevent such groundless accusations.

I would like to thank you in advance for your clarification and hope that you will settle this issue in an honest and positive way so that you will let my draft of the article be reviewed for acceptance without any prejudice and obstruction.

Best wishes, 95.67.102.245 (talk) 21:34, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
