eMedicine webpage restructuring

Previously eMedicine structured pages by field and topic-number

<code>Hence: http://www.emedicine.com/<<field>>/topic<<topic number>>.htm and then optional sections of #section~<<section>></code> Example, for the paediatric orientated article on [[Pityriasis alba]]: :<code>Coding: {{eMedicine|ped|1813}}</code>

Gives : ped/1813 at eMedicine

However, eMedicine now internally redirects the above link to its /article space as http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/910770-overview seemingly without ability to link to headers within that page but offering fairly consistant subpages of say http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/910770-treatment

So the old <<field>> <<topic number>> style still works, and indeed we need to allow for this preserved backwards compatability usage where this template is still so used. I have though now modified the coding to accept the new style where the 1st parameter (old <<field>>) is defined as "article" and this will link to the top-page article suffixed as "-overview" where the optional 4th <<section>> is not specified.

This template still therefore takes the mandatory 2 parameter value input (to preserve backwards compatability), but now must use the new eMedicine URL structure whenever the first <<field>> parameter is given as "article"

Hence: http://www.emedicine.com/article/<<topic number>>-<<section>> where section defaults to "overview"

Hence for our paedicatric-orientated pityriasis alba link (if we had not known the old page-style of "ped/topic1813") would now be directly given as:

Coding: {{eMedicine|article|910770}}

Showing as: article/910770 at eMedicine

The optional 3rd parameter for alternative display name remains:

Coding: {{eMedicine|article|910770|Pityriasis Alba}}

Showing as: Pityriasis Alba at eMedicine

and likewise the alternative final optional 4th parameter for sections:

Coding: {{eMedicine|article|910770|Pityriasis Alba|treatment}}

Showing as: Pityriasis Alba~treatment at eMedicine

Link failure

It is to be noted that the links with eMedicine_subj other than 'article' (like 'med', 'emerg' etc.) are not working. Any suggestions on how to resolve the issue or how to replace them with working links in the eMedicine article space? Diptanshu^Talk 14:57, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

It looks like the links were working in June 2013 and are archived on archive.org, so they could be resolved and converted to the article/number form ie ped/1813.

Given the old links are broken, restructuring the Template may be worthwhile. RDBrown (talk) 10:36, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
