Move back the article to "Whang-od"

WP:MOSBIO is about article content and not about article content. As per WP:COMMONNAME, use recognizable name as title. Whang-od is known by multiple source as simply Whang-od and barely mentions "Onggay." Actually, we aren't sure if Onggay is part of his first name or a surname. I think indigenous people have different naming conventions. So, before you move it back to "Whang-od Onggay", let have a consensus first here. --Jojit (talk) 01:37, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment Are you this article's creator? It appears from my quick search on reliable Philippine media news that this person's common name is actually "Whang-od Oggay" (not Onggay as what is written here). 1, 2, 3, 4,

5. As for Category:Igorot people, its taken from its main article at Igorot people, which refers to all ethnic groups in the Cordilleras including the Kalingas. So unless that article is renamed to a "less offensive ethnonym", then this Category:Igorot people is a perfectly valid category that fit this person's bio.--RioHondo (talk) 02:16, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you are correct. It's "Oggay" and not "Onggay." I already changed it. But still she is commonly referred as Whang-od and not by his full name. --Jojit (talk) 02:33, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
About the "Igorot" term, it's okay to have an article about "Igorot people" because we have articles about derogatory terms. But I think that having a category about Igorot is not appropriate. Do you see any category that refers to African Americans articles as N** people? I think there is none. So, I think that the Igorot people category should be removed. --Jojit (talk) 02:38, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is an article on Negro and a category for it can be created. But as you said, people use common names in WP so they use Category:African-American people. I'm guessing Igorot is more common than Cordillerans that's why the article is at Igorot people. As for this person's common name, for someone who isn't as famous as Erap or Balagtas (which still have their full names in their article titles btw), who only appeared in the news recently, I'd say it is too early to tell what the common name is for this person. I've only learned about this person from the news articles above, and all of them uses the full name, including the Senate resolution honoring this individual .--RioHondo (talk) 02:48, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
8 out of 13 sources that I provided in the article do not mention Oggay. So, the common name in English sources is still "Whang-od" based on the sources that I provided. --Jojit (talk) 02:49, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that the reason behind having Category:African-American people is because of WP:COMMONNAME. Do remember that in Wikipedia, we avoid libelous content on biographical articles. If we use derogatory terms in categories of biographies then the article would be libelous. --Jojit (talk) 02:58, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to see a full discussion on this to rename Igorot people and Igorot society to Cordilleran people and Cordilleran society, if indeed it is extremely derogatory and libelous as what you are suggesting. Even the Tagalog Wikipedia uses this ethnonym, not as a derogatory term but academically to refer to this ethnic group. As you can see, every reference to the ethnic group here in WP is "Igorot people" and almost none on the "politically correct" Cordilleran people. Btw, the name Wang-od Oggay without an H appears to be commonly used in RS as well.--RioHondo (talk) 03:55, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Her age is NOT accurate.

The lead states her birth year as 1917 and has the Jessica Soho documentary as a reference, but her age is based on an unverified birth certificate. Unfortunately, articles on the internet keep parroting that she is over 100 years old. But according locals in Buscalan, she is only in her 80’s. This information is not found in published references so I cannot add this info per WP:RS and WP:NOR but at least let it be known that her real age is disputed by locals in the area. I'm inclined to believe she is over 100 years old HOWEVER the birthday used is not accurate... 2600:100C:A211:7F18:BBD8:CB96:F703:DA91 (talk) 05:21, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
