Shimla

Shimla, the summer capital of the erstwhile British Raj in India, is nestled in the middle Himalyas, in northern India. The city has had a chequered past during the British Raj, and is now the capital of Himachal Pradesh, which is considered to be one of the most progressive states of India. Shimla is dotted with monuments, mainly imposing buildings dating back to the Victorian age, which are often considered as the hallmark of British rule in India. The Kalka-Shimla rail link, one of the few narrow gauge tracks still operational in India, bears testimoney to the indomitable spirit and engineering excellence of the British. Shimla (previously known as Simla) is also home to Bishop Cotton School, the oldest public school in Asia. Originally established to educate the children of British Army officers, the 170 year old institution has a strong network of old students across the globe. The school has contributed a number of professional in every sphere of public life — people have reached the pinnacle of their careers, and in the process have made significant contribution to society. However,General Dyer, the British officer who perpetrated the Jallianwalabagh massacre, remains the most (in)famous personality who has passed through the portals of this esteemed institution.

Section

I think a re-arrangement of sections of the article and repositioning of pictures at appropriate places would enhance the appearance of the article. Further edits may be added as required. Further, such arrangements on the lines of Featured articles like Goa will be still better. I will try to proceed on these lines - Ok. --Bhadani 9 July 2005 14:05 (UTC)


Heart of the City

I have removed the following statement from the section Heart of the City: "When you are there, do not miss a coffee at the Park Cafe. It is listed on the international tourist guides. The food here is just as great as the music". This statement though true, does not seem appropriate for an encyclopedia.

Sports

Places of interest

I have moved some of the descriptions and am going to put it in detail in the child pages. These pages already exist so there is no reason to put paragraphs in the main article. Makes it less cluttered and to the point. In addition, there are several more that either need to be added here or created anew. Will keep doing so in the next few days. rewrite

In an endeavour to make this article more along the lines of featured articles on Wikipedia I am going to change the layout. This may include:

  • Removing places of interest and creating a separate article, say, tourism in Shimla, with all of the material in child pages and detailed descriptions (this may require deletion of child pages like, Mall road, Shimla etc. I don't feel that that should be a separate page for each of those on an encyclopedia. Any thoughts??)
  • No need to delete child pages. This article is just a summary article. More detailed info can be put into child pages. Mall Road, Shimla has a historical significance of its own and thus deserves a separate article — Lost(talk) 01:45, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Getting more stuff (supported with sources) on Culture, Economy, and Demographics. You can help here!!

  • Some other sections like politics, market places, either need to be merged or removed.

I have edited the Places of Interest section to remove much of the advertising and guidebook aspects, as per the advice given above. Please do not replace unencyclopaedic material: WP is not Lonely Planet and only a mention of those places bearing their own pages or internal references should be placed here. Why the change from Simla to Shimla? And when?

North Indian Languages such as Hindi often Aspirate Consonents, which English written in Roman Characters, does not do unless an "h" is deliberately added. Thus the word for snow is "Shima" and so Shimalaya is "place of snow" and has come into English as Himalaya and Shimla is a shorter form, and came into English as Simla. ---- the Reverend Peter M. Christ Church, Shimla or St Michael's Catholic Church, Shimla

Why are the pictures of the stained glass windows in Christ Church, Shimla, and the exterior of Christ Church, Shimla identified as St Michael's Catholic Church, Shimla? Similarly, the article on Christ Church, Shimla was altered in 2011 to remove references to Christ Church, Shimla and replace the longer description there with one sentence referring to St Michael's Catholic church, Shimla. If, indeed, Christ Church is now St Michael's Catholic church, that information needs to be sourced, and an appropriate explanation given in the text about the historic parish of Christ Church, Shimla. Is the elevation range correct?

Hindi शिमला

That Hindi is pronounced shi-ma-lā, in theory.
Losing the 'a' from the middle syllable should require the conjunct of मल.
So, is the pronunciation correct? Is the 'a' not pronounced at all? Pronounced very lightly?

NPOV issue.

@Arjayay, I did not said that that you meant it was unsourced or something. I removed the terms "goddess" because is does satisfy WP:WIKIVOICE. We already introduced to readers that in "History" section that Kali in a goddess in hinduism. The "Etymology" section comes before the "History" section, so we have not "already (my bold) introduced to readers that in "History" section that Kali in a goddess in hinduism".
