Sfax est une ville portuaire et industrielle du Sud de la Tunisie, située à environ 220 km au sud-est de Tunis sur la mer Méditerranée. Elle est aujourd'hui la seconde ville de Tunisie avec environ 800 000 habitants.

Sfax is a port and industrial city in the South of Tunisia, situated at (an) area 220km to the southeast if Tunis on the Mediterrean Sea. (Les deux points culminants de Sfax sont le Signal de Cheridi (132 m) et le Bogat El Beïda (128 m).) Is is also the second city of Tunisia with a about 800,000 inhabitants.

Histoire

L'antique Taparura fut construite par les Romains à environ 3 km de l'actuelle ville de Sfax, dont il ne reste aujourd'hui que très peu de vestiges. Les matériaux qui formaient la ville de Taparura ont servi aux Aghlabides pour construire la cité musulmane au IX^esiècle. La ville a très rapidement acquis un rôle économique important avecs l'exportation d'huile d'olive et de poisson séché. Cela a permis à la cité de résister aux Beni Hilal venus d'Égypte en 1057.

De 1095 à 1099, Sfax était contrôlée par un petit émirat indépendant. Elle est passée sous la domination du Prince normand Roger de Sicile en 1148 avant d'être réintégrée à l'Empire musulman par les Almohades d'Abd el Moumin en 1159. Fière de son indépendance, elle résista au bey de Tunis en 1864 (révolte d'Ali ben Ghedahem), puis aux français dont elle refusait le protectorat. En 1881, pour s'en emparer, l'armée française la bombarda. La nouvelle ville fut une nouvelle fois détruite par les bombardements alliés en 1943 (lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale).

Économie

C'est une ville industrielle mais son économie repose surtout sur son port, le premier de Tunisie : la pêche y est active, mais la part la plus importante de l'économie est l'export avec l'exportation de phosphates, huile d'olive, céréales... En outre, depuis la réouverture de la frontière avec la Libye, elle connaît un surcroît d'activité. Enfin, c'est dans la région de Sfax que se situent les immenses oliveraies de la Tunisie.

Stade de football, Taïeb-Mhiri, bâti en 1938, contenant 20 000 places.

Actualité

En 2004, la ville de Sfax a accueilli des matchs de football de la Coupe d'Afrique des Nations 2004 organisé en Tunisie. Notamment le match de quart de finale, Algérie-Maroc. En Janvier 2005, Sfax a accueilli quelques matchs du premier tour de la coupe du monde de HandBall.-MBA-2005

population

Currently in Sfax at the momment and chatttign o people about how big it is, they all say its much bigger than the 200,000 quoted inthis article closer to 1 mil they reckon, the french article also seems to have a much higher number. Dexcel (talk) 15:06, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
