This article needs a new name
I have rewritten this article which was created two years ago by an anonymous editor (80.168.224.63) and expanded last month by Mikael Häggström, who also added an "Adverse effects" section to the Progestin article for "progestin-induced virilisation".
The article needs a new name because:
- There have been no published reports of cases of "progestin-induced virilisation" of external genitalia of female fetuses since the indications for treating threatened abortion and preventing habitual abortion with high-dose androgenic progestins were removed and contraindications to using high-dose androgenic progestins in pregnancy were added 43 years ago.
- The virilisation of external genitalia of female fetuses by high-dose androgenic progestins was due to their androgenic effects, not their progestogenic effects.
- In the past 30 years, the only drug reported to have caused virilisation of external genitalia of female fetuses is danazol, an androgen, not a progestin.
A more accurate and meaningful name for this article would be something like:
- Fetal masculinization of female external genitalia due to maternal use of androgenic steroids
Current endocrinology medical textbooks use the term female pseudohermaphroditism instead of fetal masculinization of female external genitalia, so a shorter name for this article could be:
- Female pseudohermaphroditism due to maternal use of androgenic steroids
but the Intersexuality and Pseudohermaphroditism articles say that pseudohermaphroditism is a "problematic" term "now restricted to the technical literature, having been replaced by intersex in most public discussion."

- Fetal masculinization of female external genitalia due to maternal use of androgenic steroids seems like a very long name, but all readers probably come here by redirection anyway, without having to type it in themselves, so I find it a good name. Mikael Häggström 05:33, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- I find the edits to this article to be problematic. It implies that it is safe to give a pregnant mother progesterone and other androgenic steroids to prevent miscarriage. Research has shown that is it not safe to give these drugs to women to prevent miscarriage. My mother took those drugs along with DES and it had epigenetic changes that persisted from my children to my grandchildren. Leave the speculation and the comments about this disorder to the experts.
