Is there such a thing?

Is there such a thing as a "Potable water diver". In my part of the world, there is no such specific occupation, qualification or registration. Any suitably equipped contractor can put a suitably competent commercially registered diver into potable water providing that the equipment and safety requirements are met. This may differ internationally, but unless there is a reference available to verify that the occupation formally exists, the article should be renamed to "Potable water diving".

More like 5,600 GHits for the whole phrase "potable water diver". Nevertheless, that still seems pretty conclusive proof of its existence. It's quite possible that the phrase has been coined by Ron Perrin, whose blogs, adverts and book (ISBN 9781477160763) make up most of the highest ranked results, but it's also in use elsewhere like the "Contaminated and Potable Water Diver Training Program".

Having said that, I wouldn't argue with renaming the article to "Potable water diving", as we often tend to name articles after the activity, rather than the person, e.g. Archaeology vs Archeologist. --RexxS (talk) 23:01, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Right. Like we have Baking instead of Baker, and Electrical construction and maintenance instead of Electrician. Or we could just do a redirect from plausible phrases that mean the same thing. --Wtshymanski (talk) 20:29, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Agreed, there's no consistent rule, but examples like Banker vs Bank, Carpenter vs Carpentry, Egyptologist vs Egyptology are common enough on Wikipedia – especially for rarer occupations like this – to make the suggested page move a reasonable idea. In any case, we should always have redirects from the other relevant phrases, no matter which one we pick as the article title. --RexxS (talk) 15:02, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

I agree with the general principle of title to follow the activity which is the de facto standard for underwater diving topics on Wikipedia, with the usual redirects, so will do this. Also potable water diver would in most countries not be a specific qualification or job description, just a commercial diver who does that work, and has the subset of skills and experience. · · · Peter Southwood ^(talk): 07:59, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
