TRANEXAMIC ACID (LYSTEDA) is a new drug approved by the FDA to treat cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding and its mechanism of action is to prevent plasminogen conversion to plasmin. It therefore acts as a antifibrinolytic. Marketing ads tout this as a non-hormonal way to treat cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding but it poses serious risks of blood clots, especially in women using hormonal contraceptives, and for this reason it is contraindicated in that group.
