Requested move 10 November 2015

The result of the move request was: moved to Motorized tricycle (Philippines). Bit of a compromise, but most people seemed to at least be OK with it and there was a clear consensus to move away from "Auto rickshaw". Jenks24 (talk) 13:43, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]


Auto rickshaw (Philippines) → Tricycle (Philippines) – The common name policy should be applied here. This vehicle is commonly called as tricycle and nobody calls this as auto rickshaw in the Philippines. Evidence of the commonality is the transport organizations that end with TODA or the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association. You can find these TODAs in every barangay that have tricycles. Nobody calls them Auto Rickshaw association. If you ask someone in the Philippines that you want to ride an auto rickshaw, they will be clueless. Jojit (talk) 11:26, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to search usage outside the Philippines. How the motorized tricycle or auto rickshaw in the Philippines are referred to in foreign media.
    • An article from Al Jazeera calls the vehicle "motorized tricycles"
    • Asia One too (notice how pedicabs and "tricycles" are used)
    • Also USA Today
    • Interestingly, Fox News used the term "tricycle taxi"
    • A 2003 article of BBC News used the term "motorcycle taxi"
Motorized tricycle is a better term to refer to the vehicle. Although riding a tricycle in the Philippines similar to riding a taxi (You board a tricycle and the driver can drop you at any reasonable nearby point). "Motorcycle taxi" or "tricycle taxi" seems to be more uncommon than "motorized taxi".--Hariboneagle927 (talk) 04:12, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • See auto rickshaw for a country-by-country breakdown. "Auto rickshaw" strikes me as an odd thing to call them. They are taxis with two-stroke engines. The numbers of wheels they have is incidental. "Tuk tuk," the Thai name, seems to have caught on internationally. Gulangyu (talk) 14:18, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned by Philg88 the modifier "motorized" is needed since outside the Philippines, "tricycle" by itself has a different connotation. This is what exactly I am implying. Although I got to add that "tricycle" is a term in Philippine English used to refer to motorized tricycles popularly used in the country as a mode of transport. The Philippine media uses "tricycle" alone to refer to motorized tricycles even Philippine legislation uses the term. See here. Also this, although there were instances that "motorized tricycle" is used instead of just tricycle. "Motorized tricycle" seems to be a longer alternative term for tricycles in the Philippines. However as compromise to speakers of English outside the Philippines which uses the term to refer to children's tricycles by default use "motorized tricycle". Using "rickshaw" reduces the cultural flavor of the subject like calling the calesa, "calash (Philippines)". According to MOS:TIES, "motorized tricycle" may be preferred over "auto-rickshaw". Even "Tricycle (Philippines)" may be sufficient since the word has a different cultural context in the Philippines. Those searching for the generic tricycle usually used by children would most probably search using the term "tricycle" alone and they get directed to Tricyle and not Tricycle (Philippines)Hariboneagle927 (talk) 16:50, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    • Comment: There is already confusion with the current name. Please read my move proposal carefully. In the Philippines, nobody calls this vehicle as auto rickshaw. I'm open with moving this to Motorized tricycle (Philippines) as long as the qualifier "(Philippines)" is there and the term "tricycle" is included. --Jojit (talk) 10:30, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Auto rickshaw" is apparently the British and Indian name for this vehicle.[24][25] Neither Americans nor Filipinos are likely to be familiar with it. The current title suggests it is the Filipino name. The purpose of a title is to tell the reader the name of the subject. The title can't do everything; That's why we have articles. It is not reasonable to expect the title to explain the differences between tricycles in the Philippines and tricycles elsewhere. Gulangyu (talk) 00:15, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
