Number of deaths in November 22 attack

I'm confused. The anniversaries page for November 22 says over 100 people died in an attack aimed at Miss World contestants, but the Miss World page says, in a general tone, that over 200 people died. Were there separate incidents that added up? I need some answers. (Note: I only found this page because it's on my birthday) Maui Psyko

Technically, both could be true. For example, if 201 people died, that is over 200 people, but it is also over 100 people.  :) --Cromwellt | Talk 17:01, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Cite it or drop it

Several entries in the article for Miss World are deficiently stated needing citations. If you can't produce a reference - with numerous existing web pages searchable on the Internet, then it has no business being in what is ostensibly an encyclopedia. Cite it or drop it. Period.

Miss Earth as one of the Rivals of Miss World

Mr. Angelo De La Paz, you cannot undo the following statements in the article about Miss World: "Its rivals, the Miss Universe and Miss Earth pageants maintain equal popularity in some parts of the world, notably the Americas and Asia, and also by virtue of the fact that most countries in the world send the winners of their major national competitions to Miss Universe and Miss Earth pageants."

The word "rival" means a competitor, one who attempts to equal or surpass the other; it does not denote the state of being superior.

With your statement: "Only Filipino fanatics recognize Miss earth is equal with Miss World and Universe but mostly beauty experts are still not!", Your statement is based on your opinion, however, the statements that you're trying to undo has cited plenty of different references, as cited below.

Take note that Miss Earth's worldwide television broadcast in Star World gained the highest rating ever on any beauty event getting a phenomenal popularity rate. Elsewhere in the world, the pageant’s popularity has continuously increased. With more women wanting to become Miss Earth, the number of national Miss Earth pageant has grown on every continent as well. At present, Miss Earth holds the record of having the greatest number of national-level contests, and continuously growing.

  • I agree with you that is Miss Earth is one of Grand Slam pageants (others are World, Universe, International and Tourism Queen International) and Miss Earth is growing but only Miss World and Miss Universe are two most important, long-history International pageants and only these two pageants have been live broadcasting around the World with over 1 billion viewers per each.How about Miss Earth...live broadcast in the Philippines only and delayed broadcast after 1 months and only in some parts of Asia!And remember Star World is a cable channel and it is still not popular in some parts of Asia!

Miss Earth must do many things to gain more experiences, popularity, cash prizes, etc...because quality of Miss Earth pageant is still same level with Miss International and Miss Tourism Queen Int'l only.

Miss World Winners List

It seems that someone has confused the winner of Mrs. World 2005 as Miss World 2005. Miss World will not be crowned until 10th December 2005 in Sanya. Sima Bakhar of Israel was crowned as Mrs. World in January in India. ---- Wexine

2005 Pageant Info

it appears that this article has been bombarded with so much information about the 2005 edition. this is not a bad thing since it might have just been due to the hype by pageant enthusiasts before the event took place. a suggestion is to place this in a separate article (i.e. titled "2005 Miss World") and just hyperlink it here through the text "2005", similar to the olympic games articles in wikipedia. in that way, it can also be a "tradition" in pageant articles here to write about the yearly editions, but not to the point of choking the main article with a specific edition's data and information.

That is an excellent idea. It should also receive a better observable link though, e.g. the full name of the article at the bottom (see also). When there are more of these links, a standard referencing system can be made. gidonb 12:23, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

What happened to Bob Hope? The article states that he was "temporarily scared by a flour bomb"... Should this be scarred? Or was he really just temporarily scared?

Does anyone have any information regarding the composition of the Miss World crown? I think it will be best if we devote a section about the crown.

2 billion viewers?

The reference for this statement is a redirect to the official miss world web site. I'm skeptical. Unless a more reliable source is available, I think that statement should be cut. I find it pretty difficult to believe that 30% of the planet's population tunes in to watch the miss world contest. Northern Bear 16:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

There's a weird tradition of heavily inflating the viewer figure for these kinds of events. It's event more common in sports. Google "billion viewers myth" and you'll find plenty of sources. 62.203.97.92 22:11, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
When I tried searching the net to find for a reliable source to the claim of 2 billion viewership of Miss World, numerous articless would come-out, the problem is, these articles do not appear to be truly reliable sources, but merely just reiterating the claim in this Wikipedia article, rather than detailing the specific statistics of viewers distribution to establish validity upon which the claim is made. These sources are simply regurgitating this very article's claims. The 2 billion viewerships is a hazy declaration to uphold; in order for the source to be reliable, it should be from a trusted source that clearly elucidates the basis. A reliable source should be able to establish the basis of the claim such as this [2]. A claim that shows the final figure without going into details is not a valid source for this 2 billion viewers. Trivia section

Though I can appreciate the motives of User:114.78.39.32 / User talk:114.78.39.32 for removing the trivia section, actually this is one of the best trivia sections I have ever seen. It is well organized, with details and references and relevant to this article (instead of say the James Bond movies' articles). See the diff for the information in question. Yes, it could probably be better integrated into the text of the article instead of being bullet points, but having it all handy is better than removing it completely. What are the criteria for awarding the prize?

How is it decided who will win the Miss World-prize? How is beauty measured, i.e is there an ideal woman, and can a beatiful, but bald woman win, how many negative (or positive) points are given to a contestant with a space between the front teath? I'm told that onlye contestant who comply (and sign) to a ethical and moral code including not posing for nude photography can participate. Is this true, are there more rules, what about contestant convicted of criminal activity, maybe a speeding ticket? More than 200 countries?

I removed the statement in the intro that the pageant is viewed in more than 200 countries for the following reasons:

  1. The sources provided don't state that it is viewed in more than 200 countries. One says "nearly 200", the other one says "200".
  2. There aren't 200 internationally recognized sovereign countries in the world. List of sovereign states says that there are "193 sovereign states with general international recognition". So "200 countries" would require the inclusion of some non-recognized countries and/or dependent territories.
  3. I know of at least one really large country where the pageant is not viewed at all because the pageant hasn't had a television contract for years: the United States. And I suspect that a nontrivial number of countries which don't send delegates to the pageant and are not major proponents of beauty pageants don't broadcast the pageant either, particularly countries in North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. See File:Miss World 2008 Map.PNG and notice all the grayed-out countries which didn't participate. I'm not saying that those countries all refuse to broadcast the pageant, but I doubt that they all do, as would be needed to get close to 200 broadcasting countries. It would be easier to confirm the pageant's real broadcast situation if the pageant would put their international broadcast schedule on their web site, but they didn't even start to do so for 2008 (despite having a link on their web site for that). --Metropolitan90 (talk) 04:32, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

It has been dropped from TV in most western countries, as it is seen as degrading exhibition, and an insult to 50% of their population. Orphaned references in Miss World

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Miss World's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Patriotic Bias

Shouldn't one mention the patriotic bias exhibited by the Miss World and Miss Universe contests?

7 winners have been crowned Miss World on their home turf. In particular, all of the 5 British winners won the title in the UK (where the contest was founded):

Remarkably, all of the 6 Miss World winners and 7 Miss Universe winners from Venezuela won their titles abroad. That is, despite its small population, Venezuela is head and shoulders above everybody else in terms of wins outside their own country. What does this tell us? I know that you are going to accuse me of ad hominum attacks, but you are really giving me the idea that you have a conflict of interest here. The way that you are edit warring to get irrelevant and dodgy sourced info in the article is sad. If the info was notable, it would have kept its own article. You give it a massive undue weight.   • I really do not care about these articles, in fact the whole beauty pageant idea turns me off, but I also can't just stand by and watch this without at least commenting. I appreciate the effort you have put in doing the merges and finding sources, however it has turned this article from a bad one to a terribly undue one. There is more information on the winners of the preliminary events than the overall winners. The list of hosts and invited articles can and should be summmarised in a few sentences, a paragraph at most, instead it absolutely dominates the article. Merging is a tricky process and requires a good understanding of the appropriate weight, where the information fits and how to present it. It is not simply a case of copying the entire content from one article to another. This is a perfect example of a poorly thought out afd resulting in a merge. Anyhw now that the merge is completed we can enter the normal editing processes and I would suggest that the lists (except for the winners) should be removed due to undue weight. Consensus at the AfD discussion was for a merge. Perhaps the nominator should have considered the potential of a merge outcome before nominating the article for deletion in the first place. The nominator could have participated more at the AfD discussion, but instead, chose to only state four words in the entire two-week discussion. So, the nominator did not realize their desired outcome, and then twice redirects the List of Miss World hosts and invited artists article to this one without performing any merge (diff, diff), against the consensus and editorial decisions of other users at the AfD discussion. This type of unilateral decision making is inappropriate in this case, because consensus was for a merge, not a redirect.

Then, the nominator performed more unilateral actions against the consensus and spirit of the AfD discussion, twice adding the importance section template to this article (diff, diff). If other users agreed with this viewpoint, they likely would have !voted to delete the article, but this did not occur.

Lastly, I'm then accused by the nominator here and in their edit summary here with nonsensical, highly inappropriate aspersions of having some sort of COI, which is absurd, nonexistent, and will be ignored.

Regarding the content itself, I think the list format is functional to organize it, and the content benefits Wikipedia's readers with the provision of factual information about the history of the Miss World pageant. I also agree with the points made by Atlantic306 above regarding the content.

This content would work as a separate spinoff and spinout article, and I would be fine with splitting it back out into a separate article titled List of Miss World hosts and artists, so perhaps this notion can be discussed herein. North America1000 22:55, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

And often (not this time) you use pageant-websites as Angelopedia, Pageantopolis os Missology to back up your statements with the excuse they source the statement. How about a serious trim of the list and converting it into a paragraph of prose. For example:

There have been many different hosts of Miss World over the years. The creator of the event Eric Morley hosted it himself from 1951 to 1958. Bob hope, Michael Aspel, Simon Dee. Keith Fordyce and David Vine all hosted the event at sometime between 1952 to 1974. Notable hosts after 1974 include Germaine Greer, Pierce Brosnan, Jerry Springer.... [add as appropriate]. Taiwanese-Canadian actress Angela Chow hosted the pageant from 2003 to 2015. From 1980 invited guest artists would also perform at the event, including .......[add as appropriate].

Almost all the host images need to go. This article is already overloaded with winners images and the images of the hosts are nowhere near significant enough to include verbatim. You need to be careful of the non-free ones too (not sure why they are here at all) as they need rational as to why we use them and there is virtually no good rational to use non-free images of living people (unless the policies and guidelines have changed since I last dealt with images). "Deesset Mundi"

Someone who apparently knows no Latin attempted to make up a Latin name for Miss World and produced Deesset Mundi. Deesset is a form of the verb desum 'to be missing' and mundi means 'of the world', so it's a nonsense phrase meaning "might be missing - of the world".
