Redirect considerations

Mattjs 22:48, 14 September 2006 (UTC)I suggested in the discussion on the Mindfulness page splitting the article or adding a Mindfulness-based Therapy page:[reply]

  • Although there is not a MT Therapy per se (but only MBCT et al) it is still an idea and a name that is useful theoreticallly ie. a useful theoretic label eg. Mindfulness alone without the CT/CBT or any other parts.
  • Alternattively maybe we or someone (as i dont know how to yet!?) should simply redirect Mindfulness-based Therapy to Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy.
  • Finally maybe a Mindfulness-based Therapies page could be created that summarizes and links to the appropriate therapies in detail eg. the second half of the Mindfulness page (see my comments over there) could then be put there instead...

Any ideas or suggestions??? User:Mattjs

Redirect like this? Mindfulness-based Therapy I ♥ ♪♫ (talk) 20:38, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Mindfulness-based Therapy needs to redirect to Mindfulness (psychology), and not to MBCT. makeswell (talk) 23:35, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've been working.

hi I'm Karley. I've been working on the MBCT page a lot attempting to clean it up. Would someone like to look at it and give me pointers? I'm not sure what clean up actually is but I've added references and lots more info. the original info was a webpage someone just copied and pasted on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karley1 (talkcontribs) 4 November 2006, 21:33

Hey this is Karley again. So, I've been working on this page for a couple of months and have made tremendous changes. Nobody has said anything so I am assuming it is okay. Let me know what you think and if more cleanup is necessary. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karley1 (talkcontribs) 7 December 2006, 01:57)

Hi, Karley — you've been doing a great job with this article! I've been doing some further edits to comply with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. Here are some further comments and pointers, hope you find it helpful:
  • The first, and most important issue: You mentioned that "the original info was a webpage someone just copied and pasted on". If this is so, it might be a copyright violation and needs to be attended to! Any remaining text that was taken from the webpage needs to be removed. Which is the website that was copied?
  • It's best if the first sentence of the first section is a sort of definition that sums up the topic. Maybe something like "Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a form of psychotherapy that blends cognitive therapy with mindfulness skills."?
  • I added some categories to the page, Category:Psychotherapy and Category:Cognitive therapy. Maybe there is (or should be created) a relevant category for topics on mindfulness that should be added as well?
  • Some parts of the text should be written from a more neutral point of view, an important policy on Wikipedia that is sometimes called NPOV. For example, take the sentence: "Depression is a more serious problem than how it is presently seen." Seen by who? And who thinks it's a more serious problem?
  • I'm not sure that the whole section on depression is needed — this article should focus on what MBCT is.
  • It would be nice to have more primary sources. For example, "The World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a study..." — it's best to reference this with that WHO study, not a secondary source. (However, a secondary source is of course better than nothing at all.) I changed the style of references to the popular <ref>, hope you like that.
  • When writing on talk pages, it's a good idea to sign you posts using four tildes: ~~~~.
Hope you will continue contributing to Wikipedia on this and other topics! /skagedal... 21:32, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mindfulness-based therapy

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is one of the therapeutic applications of mindfulness. Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is another. ACT is derived from these techniques.

Mindfulness-based therapy should no longer be considered a part of alternative medicine as it is widely used in mainstream (particularly psychological) treatment, especially for sufferers of chronic pain and severe depression. A lot of systematic, emperical research has been done, which has shown that it works.

Stigmatising this treatment by calling it "alternative" is possibly hazardous to the health of those who might gain from mindfulness.

This article needs expanding. The Wikipedia also needs an article on MBSR.

Here's another page which also has more information on MBSR. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Makeswell (talkcontribs) 00:04, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I created the page Mindfulness-based stress reduction, as JHvW suggested, because it is different from MBCT. I created this page on the basis of this research article, "Mindfulness-based stress reduction and health benefits: A meta-analysis" by Grossman, Niemann, Schmidt and Walach, available here. That article does use MBSR instead of MBCT, although I am not fully aware of the difference. We could certainly use an expert to help us distinguish between the two. For right now each covers almost the same material as the other. makeswell 17:45, 9 July 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Makeswell (talkcontribs)

If you wish to contact me, you can do so on my userpage, but DO NOT leave messages, as I will not read them (that is explained there as well). --JHvW (talk) 10:07, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In this section I refer to YouTube. YouTube is not regarded as a reliable source of information in Wikipedia and external links may violate copyright, you can find more information here.
It may also be usefull to read articles or books by Zindel Segal, John Teasdale and Mark Williams. Together with Jon Kabat-Zinn they are, in my mind the pioneers of introducing Mindfulness based techniques into mainstream therapy. If you want to see Mark Williams (and he is not the snooker player) speak on this subject, you can see him on YouTube by clicking here. In the video Williams refers to the NICE.
I will also try to answer the question about the difference between MBCT and MBSR. MBCT is a form of Cognitive behavioral therapy (generally referred to as CBT) which is based on mindfulness techniques. MBSR is a technique used to reduce symptoms that are caused by stress, especially in those who have been given up by traditional medicine. If you would have to reduce this to one short expression I would say that MBCT influences the way you think, whereas MBSR influences the way you feel, although I will hasten to add that that is not doing these techniques any justice.
There are many video's of Jon Kabat-Zinn on YouTube, but if you have the time, a really good video is here, although it runs for nearly 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is Jon's contribution to the Google Tech Talks. --JHvW (talk) 11:07, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I noticed that in the last paragraph of the first section, it mentions that research supports the idea that this type of therapy reduces cravings for those with substance use issues, yet there is no citation here. Does anyone know of a good source that can be used to support this claim? Mmnwilde (talk) 23:23, 19 January 2022 (UTC)mmnwilde[reply]

Since when was mindfulness and mindfulness meditation a "newer psychological strategy"? ;o)

Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation cannot seriously be described as being new or newer... 31.51.127.28 (talk) 17:24, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Opposing Data

This study compiles several studies and shows that mindfulness is not effective in treating depression or anxiety. I'm not good at editing Wikipedia, but this is rather useful IMO

Thank you for your link! However, the review was for mindfulness meditation, not for Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. Lova Falk talk 08:41, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hi everyone, I am working on this article for an assignment. I was thinking about adding in some information on MBCT practices and benefits that might stem from it. So far, I have been looking in particularly at mindfulness-based stress reduction and considering on adding a small section on that as well as expanding on potential benefits of MBCT Grgarcia5 (talk) 16:22, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I am reviewing this article and wonder if we could put more on the history of Buddhism and mindfulness? It says a lot about ICS and MBSR but no mention of the origins of mindfulness and crediting Buddhism which is how MBCT would have originated from as well. Does anyone have any sources we could add? Thanks! Charlibise (talk) 20:59, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
