Governor General Designate

Like resume tag

Article has a bunch of bulleted lists, clean that up. The Current positions and membership section is especially bad. In the career section, phrasing like «she assisted with the facilitation and write-up», « took the lead role in negotiating», « took the lead role in negotiating» is gibberish people write in their resume. needs to be clarified.159.33.10.190 (talk) 18:57, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Poor citation

I would like to draw attention to the poor quality citation: "McGill University Speakers Bio". Archived from the original on November 9, 2012. Retrieved September 4, 2017."

This citation included at least one error, which stated (and has been repeated in many other resumé blurbs) that subject has received "Gold Order of Greenland" - an award which does not exist.

Gold Order of Greenland

Many sources, including on the Canadian Prime Ministers biographical profile of subject, erroneously claim subject has received the "Gold Order of Greenland". (https://pm.gc.ca/en/news/backgrounders/2021/07/06/mary-simon-oc-oq)

The "Gold Order of Greenland" does not exist.

An award similar to the "Order of Canada" exists in Greenland, the Nersornaat: "[T]he Greenland Medal for Meritorious Service (Danish:Grønlands Hjemmestyres Fortjenstmedalje), is awarded by the Greenland Home Rule government. This is the correct name of the award which subject has received, and I have updated Wikipedia article to reflect that, including citation directly to the Parliament of Greenland's website where it states subject received the award on July 24, 1992. Inuktitut Name

I've made two changes to how Simon's Inuktitut name is presented in this article (before edits: "ᓂᖏᐅᑲdᓗᒃ, romanized: Ningiukadluk").

First, the cited source from CTV gives her Inuktitut name as Ningiukudluk, with a U, not an A.

Second, I've removed the rendering of the name in syllabics. The syllabic alphabet doesn't have a letter D, so online transliterators leave it in the latin alphabet (hence, ᓂᖏᐅᑲdᓗᒃ). The Government of Nunavut's transliteration software suggests rendering D sounds with symbols for T. I think an actual source for how Simon would write her name in syllabics is needed.

@Peter Ormond - the name used here, "ᒥᐊᓕ ᓴᐃᒪᓐ", comes out in Latin script as "Miali Saiman". It's a transliteration of her English name into Inuktitut, not a syllabic spelling of her Inuktitut name. Madg2011 (talk) 00:18, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

References to work at CBC

The multiple, prominent references to her work at the CBC are given far more weight than her other past work, to the point that it feels political. There is so much more to her story than a brief job there over 40 years ago, and it seems designed to feed cynicism about prominent CBC journalists being appointed Governor General. Past GGs were indeed noted as being prominent CBC personalities, but this individual does not qualify as such, both because of her relatively minor role there, and how far in the past it was.   • Really? Even though, I assume, you followed the instructions on the site which says "To obtain permission for non-commercial reproduction please complete the copyright form (pdf — 918 Kb) and forward it to photo@gg.ca."? I fail to see why the use here wouldn't count as allowable non-commercial reproduction. User:Enigma00
    • Images only licensed for non-commercial use aren't allowed on Wikipedia because "we" want the encyclopedia to be reproducible as much as possible, including images. Basically unless someone goes out and takes a photo of her we're stuck with the blurry image. Free content is prioritized over providing readers with useful images on this site. It's better to exclude a non-commercial image even though it's a non-profit site because of the off-chance some entity might want to reproduce everything commercially? It never makes sense to me, but Canada is also to blame. The US and UK can have usable images but we can't? Like seriously the person taking the official images is being paid through public money, but the public can't reuse the stuff they paid the person to do?! It sucks but at least there is an image, albeit blurry. But hey, if Canada wants the current image to be the representation of the governor general on a popular web page then so be it.       • I would like to understand how this is an issue with this particular photo, yet the photo in the article for Julie Payette (which falls under the same license and is taken by the same photographer) remains up and was allowed to be uploaded.         • From some digging at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Johanie_Maheu the Payette photo was uploaded by the original photographer themselves, who possesses all the rights and was able to release it.
        • There was some discussion on their talk page regarding this. Perhaps someone can try and get in touch and see if an alternate photo from the shoot can be released like was done for Payette. —WildComet talk 05:35, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

When was the RM?

I understand the rationale but it would have been nice to have a discussion as she is only referred to as "Mary May Simon" very infrequently until now. As seen in the published works section, she mostly credited herself as Mary Simon, not Mary May Simon. It is arguable that her WP:COMMONNAME is Mary Simon, not Mary May Simon. Whoever moved the article was probably jumping the gun. But 'Mary May Simon' has since been adopted by the major news organizations (example), and per WP:NAMECHANGES, we give extra weight to reliable sources written after the name change. If the reliable sources written after the change is announced routinely use the new name, Wikipedia should follow suit and change relevant titles to match. It appears to have been moved due to a tweet the mover noticed about a press release mentioning the name change. I presume since the gg.ca website had also been updated at that time to say "Mary May Simon", the mover did not see the move as being controversial, and as stated at Wikipedia:Requested moves, was bold and moved the page without the need for a discussion. Criticism section should be added

Recent investigations have shown frivolous spending on oversees trips by the gov gen's office (rideau hall). There should be a criticism section added and maintained with these updated, journalistically verified facts.
