Total Attendance

I don't understand the relevance of showing total attendance. It's obvious that in general that the leagues with the most games are going to have the highest attendance. Total attendance makes sense. Less frequent games will improve average attendance just like more frequent games will improve total attendance. You need to look at both to judge popularity. If you start going by average attendance alone, how will you account for venue size with popularity? For example, Fenway Park only holds 35,000. 68.99.246.211 (talk) 14:21, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with 68.99.246.211. Some leagues, which have one of most attendance of sports leagues have smaller stadiums than other sports leagues. For example, the dome stadiums of NBA and NHL are mainly about 20,000 seats. Sincerelywikis (talk) 15:19, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Segregate between indoor and outdoor?

Naturally indoor arenas have smaller capacities than outdoor arenas, so it'll be interesting what is the largest indoor and outdoor league. --Howard the Duck 14:32, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For example, I've grouped all sports played on grass outdoors, although some stadiums can be closed when it rains, the sport - and the league - is primarily outdoor. Everything else is indoor. --Howard the Duck 12:12, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are more than a few stadiums in the NFL and CFL that are exclusively indoor (ie. non-retractable, closed roof stadiums... off the top of my head BC Place, Olympic Stadium, RCA Dome, Metrodome, Superdome, Edward Jones Dome, Georgia Dome), and probably some in the other leagues as well..? Domes for football are typically as big as their outdoor/retractable roof brethren, in some cases bigger. All NFL stadiums are at least 50,000 seats, I believe. It's still a worthwhile distinction, however, because football, like baseball, is meant to be played outdoors on grass, not in a sterile dome with Astroturf (or Fieldturf these days, as the case may be).
Yes, this Indoor/Outdoor section has the problem as you all pointed out. Seeing objectively as a viewer, you cannot say the dome stadiums are outdoor. Main article, List of sports attendance figures doesn't divide this list into Indoor/Outdoor.(they only divide in championship event but that also has some dome stadiums into outdoor section, while some domes into indoor. Move NFL Europa?

Nothing against this particular competition but don't think it belongs here. The number of games played (30) is half the number of the next fewest of any league, and 5 to 10 times fewer than most. It would be better off under International Club Competitions on the main attendance page. These competitions have a similiar number of games, and technically it is an international competition anyway, with one team in Holland.

I disagree. By that logic the Celtic League, A-League, MLS, MLB, etc should all be moved also as those leagues are in more than one country also.--otduff t/c 07:19, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NPB has conflicting numbers

In the Outdoor table, it has the NPB's records from 2006, whereas in the Top 10 it's from 2005, which conflicts with all the other leagues in the Top 10 which are from 2006. I'm really bad at editing Wikipedia so I won't go ahead and change it, but I just want to bring light to that.

Rugby Union National League 1?

I searched for this in the table after spotting the English NL2 near the bottom of the list. The NL1 in English Rugby Union has a higher attendance I ma sure, but since the website which gives us the figures for NL2 and lower don't cover the NL1, it is absent. Checking out the official website for it also fails to garner results.

Where's the attendance figures for the Mexican primera división? IPL

Guys, does anyone know what the average attendance for the Indian Premier League (cricket) is ? Judging by this source [1], I calculated about 58,000 (just averaging the stadium capacities), but I cant locate a definitive source for it. If anyone can, can they add this ? Thanks. 2nd in Top 10?

I was under the impression for total attendance the IPL should come 2nd in the list. Does anyone know of a website that details their total attendance last season? Koos (talk) 16:56, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Economist ran an article on June 5th 2014, stating that the IPL had average attendance figures of 23,763 per game (though the stats are for 2009?) with 1.4 million spectators altogether, this would place it 10th position overall. I'm not sure what the recent numbers are? However, I reckon the average at least, would higher, even though some of the earlier fixtures are played overseas. Also, what about sports such as Formula 1, Superbikes, Diamond League Athletics, they are leagues after all?

Scottish Premier League Attendance Figures for 2007/08

The figures supplied for the SPL for 2007/08 are incorrect because the source (football365.com) has made mistakes in recording and calculating attendances at both Celtic and Rangers (e.g. the Rangers home game against ICT on 3 Nov 2007 is listed as having an attendance of 4,898 and the average attendance for Celtic is clearly far too low given the crowds recorded during the season). An alternative source of statistics is [2] Working with the data supplied on that site, the average attendance in the SPL for 2007/08 is 15,483. Include Regular Season games only?

The 2nd bullet point of the intro says some entries are regular season only (I think this includes NFL) whilst the last bullet point confirms that seasons with a knockout phase are also to be included (AFL given as example). Would it be easiest if only regular season attendance figures are included in this list, or at the least there ought to be text included if attendance figures do not include the knockout phases. Why is NASCAR / motorsport not included?

Without getting into the debate about whether or not it's a sport, it falls into the same category as tennis and golf, where there are exhibitions and tournaments and touring events. Vietnam Football numbers

I couldn't access the Vietnam Football Federation link, but the numbers cited don't make sense. 182 games at an average attendance of 10,000 would give a total attendance of 1.8 million, not 180 million. Agreed, someone can't do math. I'm removing the 187 million number and will leave it blank until someone else can put in a referenced number. I'll leave the average (it seems about right from what I did see), but I'd rather not simply multiply the average by the number of games and put that number in there because it is likely off slightly due to rounding. Completely useless list

Well, if you notice, these are all sports that have home teams and away teams, with a recurring number of games at each venue each year. Touring sports like auto racing, tennis, figure skating, and golf usually have only 1 or 2 events at each venue each year. It's a special event in that area, as opposed to a regular event that happens 1 or more times every 2 weeks. Therefore, it's not comparing apples to apples. That said, there's nothing to stop anyone (you?) from adding that information in a way that makes sense (ie. a separate table in the article, or perhaps a separate article would be best). This table includes attendences at competitions with matches that take place between two teams only. In golf, motorsport, sailing, weightlifting, ski-ing, and many other sports, the events include all competitors. Maybe the title or lead of this article should reflect that. Several Pointless Inclusions

Why are things like the "Rugby Union National League 3 (North)" included in this list? A league with barely over 200 average attendance hardly merits inclusion in this list. There are recreational roller derbies that get better attendance. IPL

When first reading, the attendance figures for the IPL seemed a little high to me. After checking the sources provided, I found neither of them supported the figures reported in the article. In addition, there are other outside articles I have read that have said the 58,000 average figure was based on every game being sold out and filled to capacity. If this is the case, I believe the article should either clarify this for readers or present the figures for the IPL separate from others. Does any one else have info or opinions on this? There appear to be no relaible figures for the IPL on the internet, and I have read journalists say the same. For whatever reason the IPL don't want them public, or maybe the franchises haven't kept track of their figures, although this is hard to believe given the investment involved, but you never know with Indian Cricket. Simply from viewing many games there is no way every one is sold out so the 58,000 figure was a bogus one. In fact 58,000 seems far too high even if every game is sold out as the typical capacity of the stadia is around 30,000 to 40,000 rather than 60,000. Nevertheless the average would be very respectable for a newish competition in a developing country, guestimate 25,000 - 30,0000?, but unfortunately, being an encyclopedia, there is not sufficient information to list the IPL at the moment so it is probably the correct decision to leave it out of the main list. Regarding IPL I would like to say that the average capacity of the stadiums is around 48000. The stadiums are more or less packed in every game. Let us take 80% attendance figure which, I can say with every certainty, is on lower side of the estimates. Since equal no. of games are played in every stadium, we can safely assume a minimum average of 40000. This certainly puts it among the top sports leagues in the world. League types

Premier League

Why does the Premier League list both England and Wales as countries? Yes there is 1 Welsh side in it, but it is the English Premier League, run by the English Premier League Association, under the English F.A.

There is a separate Welsh Premier League.

US Baseball

In this list, MLB is listed as a league. This is fair, but note that it is the conglomerate of two leagues, the American League and the National League, the winners of which meet in the World Series. Similarly, you should consider combining together various minor league baseball leagues. You could use the largest, MiLB. I suggest, alternatively, that you should combine together the International League and the Pacific Coast League. Together, they are called Triple-A Baseball, and include one team for each team in MLB. The winners of these two leagues meet each year in a championship game, and also play an all-star game. Triple-A Baseball would then be in the top ten leagues in total attendance, with 13,589,496. Yes, Triple-A Baseball should be on the list like Football League Championship in total attendance. Next, in US sports like MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL, they all have two more inner-league/conference in each of league. e.g. Eastern/Western conference or American/National League. Their inner-leagues are the part of the league. They play against other division teams in a season. So the league itself is MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL. if you combine leagues then could combine all European football leagues under Champions League. So either combine, or never combine. Some guidelines needed

Just updated some numbers for Sweden. I am unsure whether to include end-of-season playoffs or just use the basic season, this makes quite a difference to the numbers. The article only says that some figures include this and some do not. Perhaps it should say which should be used in preference and/or provide a way to indicate this. Another thing: I think having a minimum number for inclusion would be a good idea. I suggest 1000. Top leagues in total attendance: Serie A and Ligue 1

The Ligue 1 had a higher total attendance than the Serie A last season. I therefore intend to replace the Serie A with Ligue 1 in the table "Top leagues in total attendance", but there is one problem: how do we calculate the average capacity when RC Lens played at two different stadiums during the seasons? It can be done by taking into account the number of matches played at each stadium, but that is complicated and I am skeptical towards including figures from that kind of complicated calculations in the article. Minimum Attendance Standards?

Just wondering if there's a reason why the indoor sports table seems to have a minuimum attendance of 2,000 while the outdoor sports table seems to have no standard, with some numbers at just a couple hundred? I know indoor sports had a number of inclusions some under 2,000 a while ago, one of which I had added. National Basketball League of Canada at around 1,900. I'm not sure when they were removed, or if a reason was posted. I plan on doing the same to the outdoor sports table soon to be consistent, unless I hear about a valid reason not to.
