Talk:Isabel Hampton Robb

I will be editing this page for a project for a seminar on the history of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for the Spring 2015 Semester. The page could use more information overall. There is important information pertaining to Hampton's career and personal life that is missing. I think this page could include more subdivisions. The "Impact in Nursing" section could be divided into sections focusing specifically on her contributions to Johns Hopkins and her personal life, for example. Sources that could be used include the history section of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine website[1] and a short biography on Hampton [2] Devynbell114 (talk) 20:19, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am partnering with Devyn for this project on Hopkins Medicine. There is a lot of specific Johns Hopkins Medicine related information that could be included in this Wikipedia article, especially from some of the sources listed below. I also believe this page should include more information dealing with Isabel's early life, in order to see how much this influenced her career and ideology. This article could also use pictures of Isabel and the Hopkins Nursing Building. An information box on the side with a picture of her published book and relevant summaries/information could also be useful. Rserafi2 (talk)

Plans for This Article

The following improvements to the article will hopefully explain Hampton's life in greater detail, while offering a solid structure for the article that makes it more logical/simple to read. The first step will be to outline Hampton's early life, as well as her "pre-Hopkins" career. Much of her impact in nursing was made at Johns Hopkins, so it is critical to have a detailed section regarding this. The final section will outline the later years of her life, including any additional contributions to nursing/medicine, and her death. Adding photo/description boxes is the final step in the plan - one listing important dates with a portrait of Isabel, and a second with information about one of her publications. A solid, updated references page will also be added to the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.26.221 (talk) 17:26, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lead Paragraph

The following is a draft for a possible lead paragraph: Isabel Adams Hampton Robb (1860-1910) was heavily involved in the modernization of the nursing system in the United States. She was a nurse theorist, author, and instructor. Hampton's notable roles in the nursing field include serving as the first Superintendent of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, writing influential textbooks, and founding organizations now known as the National League for Nursing, the International Council of Nurses, and the American Nurses Association. Hampton also played a large role in advancing the social status of nursing through her work in developing a curriculum of more advanced training during her time at Johns Hopkins. The article thus far looks great! Some suggestions I have for improving it are mostly surrounding style, since I assume content will expand naturally as you work on the article. Ensure only the first word of the subheading is capitalized, this mistake is a simple fix and is present several times. Also in the text boxes, you may want to add links to applicable areas. Lastly, the organization of the article could be altered slightly to resemble that of standard Wikipedia articles, such as designating time periods for early and late life. Also separating career and merging it with her impact would be effective. Overall, great work so far, I look forward to seeing the final article! Sdoman1 (talk) 00:22, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like you are doing a great job with this article. I like how there is a section devoted to her work at Johns Hopkins. I would make some of the titles of the sections more specific and concise (include years). Also, for some of the sections, it might be more efficient with your space by combining some of the sections like the recognition and awards unless you plan on adding more accomplishments. Overall, it looks great and I'm sure it will get better as you continue to add more sources and information. KMFischer (talk) 04:32, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Overall: Great introduction and overall appearance of the article. My first suggestion is to keep the way she’s addressed consistent, so referring to her only as Robb or only as Hampton. Also, aesthetically, maybe move the book’s box to the left side?

Early Life and Career: First sentence is a little awkward, and could be rephrased better. I would also recommend adding more examples of her contributions, the reforms specifically.

Major Impacts on Nursing at Johns Hopkins: I would introduce the interview quote at the beginning of the section, so start off with when she got to Hopkins and then comment on her contributions through the position.

Later Life: Great structure and very informative, though maybe slightly too informative on things that aren’t relevant to why she is relevant.

Nursing Leadership: This should go before her Later Life.

Hi guys, A couple suggestions for improvement:

  • I would recommend combining the "Awards and honors" and the "Memorial Awards/Funds" into one section, since they are both pretty short sections.
  • You could add a few more hyperlinks. For instance, when you mention the "Nurses' Alumnae Association," you could link it to American Nurses Association

All together, I think your article looks great! Nice work. Ahong11 (talk) 18:32, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

PEER REVIEW

Hey guys- I think in the "works" section you could add a couple sentences describing each work (its most important points/why it was significant). I also think you guys should keep on citing. Other than that, good work!!! Rschwa99 (talk) 02:09, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work thus far. I tried moving the book infobox, but it will not move. I think its because infoboxes are meant to always be on the right in the lead section. Other recommendations:

  • The page seems career driven. Perhaps convert some information to a new "Biography" section.
  • Can the books in the "Works" section be linked?
  • I think the items under "Works" should have a description, or be moved to "Further reading".

Good job! Jdeales1 (talk) 03:41, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing job so far!

For the "awards and honors" section, either incorporate the one fact into another section, or add more to that section.

If you can, move the second picture box to the other side. In beta, if you click on it and go to advanced settings you should be able to select "left" (from left, right, or middle). Then you can drag it higher or lower.

Great job!

Hey guys great job so far. You guys added a lot of great information and the article looks awesome. The only thing I would suggest is taking the sections under career that talk about the books she wrote and moving them to the works section. That way it's more organized than having her publications spread throughout the article. Good luck with the finishing touches Cstauch1 (talk) 18:15, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your article looks great! I really like how you separated her career section into different time frames. It helps break it down and make it a bit more approachable. Some things that I might change are I would combine the awards section with the memorial awards.funds section because the awards section is very short. Also, I would just include her death in the "later life" section. It might be interesting to add links to the "works" section so people could either read the work or a summary of what it's about. Awesome job with all of the edits!! KMFischer (talk) 05:01, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Even more peer advice

You guys have done a great job with this! I would primarily recommend taking one more look at the introductory paragraph and seeing if there's anything you can add there, since it seems a bit short. That section also needs references. Aside from that, I'd recommend uniting the two sections on Awards, since one of them only has one so you could easily make that a single section. Aside from that, I think the format looks awesome and the information is more than enough to give a comprehensive view of who she was and the work she did. Great job! This article looks great! My only suggestion is to add external links in the Further Readings section if any of the works can be found online. Aflynn2 (talk) 17:50, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the article covers a lot of information about her life and the only two things to suggest would be referencing more in the early life and career section and combining some of the award and legacy sections at the bottom. Apatera517 (talk) 16:43, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looks great! I would suggest enlarging the picture or using a larger portrait of her. There is also a formatting issue of "medical career" in the info box. I would add a biography heading and have more sub headings in general, similar to other notable figures' pages. Sdoman1 (talk) 21:45, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Great articles! Here are some small suggestions:

  • The last bit in Early Life is great information, but seems like it should be cited
  • Florence Nightingale was an important nursing figure as well. When you mention her, you should preface it with a small clause mentioning who she is, just because the average reader might not recognize her without clicking her link.
  • In what ways did her book impact the field of nursing? Was it immediate? Was there objection to it?
  • Some sentences seem a bit choppy and short, and many can be blended together just so that it flows better when you read it.

All in all, it was hard to find suggestions to make, because this article is very well done. Love the infobox in the middle about her work! Aneekpatel (talk) 22:02, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It would help if you were to add her death to the later life section of the article as well as add some citations to some things in that section. Also adding a few links to further readings will give more credibility to the article as a whole. Besides that the article looks great and has a great picture to boot. Looks Great! The overall structure looks awesome with just one tip. Combing both awards sections would make more sense because both are small128.220.159.83 (talk) 03:52, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good work! One suggestion I have is to move the "Further impact on nursing section". It is currently under the "Career at Johns Hopkins" section, yet it fails to mention anything about Hopkins. I would move it into "later career" or make it its own section. Also, the legacy section fails to address the impact her book had on the medical field. I think these improvements would really take this article to the next level! Cduke15 (talk) 03:56, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
