Modified Fischer Nomenclature

I modified the text to conform to the modified Fischer nomenclature of the ICA, introduced by Bouthillier et al 1996 (see references). This involved moving some of the text around and introducing some segments.

I also removed the following:

    • Uncal artery
    • Meningeal branch - helps supply blood to meninges

As these are not, in my opinion, supported by the references listed, truly named branches of the ICA. The meningeal branches, I think, are equivalent to the capsular branches and other small unamed branches of the ICA, the uncal artery is more correctly a branch the middle cerebral artery.Felgerkarb 20:13, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Clarification: There are named meningeal branches (i.e. middle meningeal artery, posterior meningeal artery, etc) that feed the meninges, but these are not branches of the internal carotid artery normally. The meningohypophyseal trunk can supply branches to the meninges, including the tentorial branches named in the text.Felgerkarb

Terminology for this article is outdated and covered in full on the respective article (ICA); this article should exist as a redirect only. LT910001 (talk) 06:10, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Information here is already covered in "Internal carotid artery", it is unnecessary and needlessly fragments the subject to have as a separate article. Merging will centralise information, and help readers by providing more context. Tom (LT) (talk) 03:53, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Chemoreceptors

Can someone add the existence of chemoreceptors nearby? --Enigma55 (talk) 21:07, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Clean-up after merges

The backlinks to the present article from itself, as under The segments of the internal carotid artery are as follows:, appear to serve no purpose now, other than being visually distinct. I suggest replacing the hyperlinks with bold or italic formatting. —DIV (137.111.13.4 (talk) 06:51, 15 November 2021 (UTC))[reply]
