4th paragraph needs clarification.

In the 4th paragraph it reads "Some breath-activated inhalers do not require manual activation, but will automatically sense the patient breathing in and deliver the dose.

What is meant by breath activated? Is it an add on or supplemental device like Turbo or what? A Dry Powder Inhaler needs to be set up or triggered in some mannor.

Not for sure what to do?

Added Information to this talk page. I discovered the self contained MDI, possibly being of what is stated, is sold in the UK. under the the Easi-Breathe brand.

MDIs work by expelling formulation from a canister using the energy generated by their pressurised liquid propellant evaporating, this shoots the drug out of the inhaler and generates a cloud that can be inhaled by the patient. DPIs work in a variety of different ways but generally they present a dry powder to the patient which is made into a cloud by the turbulent airflow when the patient inhales through the device. 2020 WikiProject Medicine: UCF College of Medicine

Hi there! I am a fourth year medical student at the UCF College of Medicine and have chosen this Wikipedia article for my WikiProjects assignment. This course is designed to allow medical students to help improve Wikipedia medicine articles. I am excited to get to contribute to this wonderful community.

I am interested in going into pediatrics and have chosen this topic specifically for its importance in regards to this population. My general goal for the next four weeks will be to expand this article to include some additional information regarding types of medications as well as proper use of inhalers. I also plan to use some of the most up to date medical guidelines to mention some of the most common conditions that are treated with inhaled medications, as well as the associated medications. I have outlined my complete plan below.

I am so excited to get to be involved in this project and look forward to any and all comments or questions regarding my work.

Outline:

Lead: This portion can be expanded, especially with the new information that I plan on adding. I will add sections talking more about common conditions, medications, and the importance of proper inhaler use. I also have noticed that some information introduced in the lead currently is not expanded upon in the article (will add sections in article for things mentioned in the lead). I also noticed that no sources are used in the lead. I would like to use sources for the information here.

Medical Uses: This will be a brand new section that I plan to add. This section will include the relevance of inhalers to medical therapy, as well as the common reasons that they are used in clinical and outpatient settings. This will also explain the benefits of inhaled medications vs. oral/systemic medications in this section. I also plan to mention some common medical conditions that require inhaler therapy.

Types: This section has a good start and I hope to expand on what has already been stated. There are other forms of inhalers that can be added to this section, including multiple types of MDIs and nebulizers. I expand this section to include these things. I also plan to mention spacers in this section, which are commonly used when using MDIs.

Medications: This sections will replace the propellant heading. Propellant will become a subset of this new heading. I plan to do some minor edits only to this section. I then plan on mentioning some commonly used inhaled medication and their clinical correlations to certain medical conditions.

Proper Use: This will be a new section. I would like to outline proper use of inhalers, especially MDIs, as they are commonly prescribed but also have a high rate of misuse. This section will outline the steps in how to properly administer inhaled medications in different age groups. I will also talk about best types of inhalers for different populations in this section

History: I believe that this section is well researched. I only plan on only making minor edits to this section if it seems necessary.

Images and sources: I plan on adding a few good images and I am also hoping to add a video to the proper use section, showing a good image of how to properly administer inhaled medications. I will provide new sources where it appears to be necessary as well as use some of the sources already provided.

Peer review of Wikimedicine Project

Hey Zach!

Great work editing the article on Inhalers! I particularly think the opening paragraph was great work on providing a concise introduction to what inhalers are, their use and advantages of usage. This is going to serve as a great way way for the lay population to do a "drive-by" of the topic and gather the most high yield points

I think the opening section on medical uses is very similar to the articles introduction but it does go into more detail and makes it unique on its own without being redundant. The sections on asthma and COPD are well written and touch on the highlights of the use of inhalers without going into specific treatment plans or leading the reader to a preferred treatment method. It is informative without being suggestive.

The section on types of inhalers was extremely beneficial to read and I'm glad you were able to expand in this area. In the section on soft mist inhalers, I found the wording "This requires coordination as in the MDI" and "This make this type of inhaler more forgiving" to be a little ambiguous and could use come clarification on the comparison being made to the MDI and why a SMI is more forgiving.

The section on proper use is the most beneficial addition to this page as you have added very clear details on how to correctly use each type of inhaler and even provided a video detailing the process. I think for a average wikipedian this will be extremely beneficial because they will be coming to the page for a brief overview of inhalers and how to use them. You clearly address both of these needs and highly commend your work in this area.

Overall I find your work to be outstanding and a great addition to a topic of high importance. I'm sure your work will be extremely beneficial for many users of this site.
