Temporary vs. permanent

It was my understanding that IVC filters are only temporary, as the filters themselves can become a focal point for DVT's. Is that wrong? --aishel 22:01, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article is okay; filters used to be permanent only. The "retrievable" ones are new... which has increased their use. As for being a focal point of DVT-- if the filter is well designed it shouldn't happen. Nephron  T|C 05:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have included additional details on this matter. Filters can cause edema, swelling of the legs, arms, feet, hands, focal emboli, and possible blockage of blood flow in the IVC if they trap a large emboli. While rare, it can happen. The side effect information added should answer those questions for you. zackrspv —Preceding undated comment added 13:20, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CPT

For CPT purposes, Is a vein/Artery thrombectomy always included with the placement of an IVC filter?

The CPT code description for the filter placement is "interruption of vena cava." It does not include the thrombectomy, and rarely does this procedure involves the thrombectomy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Krkurtiskim (talkcontribs) 00:15, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
