Suspect a terrible misinformation in the "Treatment" section.

Look, I am not medically trained in any way, so will simply report what happened and hopefully this might flush a subject matter expert to express an opinion. I question this business of: "The surgery can be performed arthroscopically and, consequently, on an outpatient basis. Patients often have to use crutches for a few days following surgery.".

Well, my wife had this medical condition (so yes, this makes this all OR, but please bear with me, I think that this is "important"). The MRI showed pretty well all of the issues discussed in this article, plus others: the bursitis itself, a couple of tendonopathies, a too-tight illio-tibial band, and a rough spur on the femur which the surgeon suspected was the root cause of all of the problems. He said that it would be a one hour procedure, with a 15 cm (6 inch) incision, and six weeks on crutches. I queried this, quoting the arthroscopic claim above, and he said something along the lines of: "Well yes, that's true as far as it goes, but that is only the case if it is a bursitis only and nothing else, which is usually not the case, and certainly not the case here". He said that in my wife's case, all of the things that he had to look at were way too big and much too far apart to be done arthroscopically.

So to repeat, can we have a subject matter expert look at this and see whether any changes are needed to the article (and/or to tell me that I know s*** about this (something I already know) and to go away). Old_Wombat (talk) 08:02, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

In fact, both of the external references support what the surgeon said, so this "few days on crutches" is looking more and more suspicious. Old_Wombat (talk) 08:06, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

You are not being clear. What exactly is your concern, that the crutch recommendation isn't specific enough or implying it is short? MartinezMD (talk) 14:54, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

I made a simple change. I don't think it was "terrible" misinformation as you put it, but the necessity for crutches is variable since it is pain and healing driven (which is different from person to person, as well as what procedure is done). I couldn't find any clear source on the recommendations, but I think it is fair in the way it now reads. MartinezMD (talk) 17:59, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
