This page was listed on Mediawiki:Opentask (now Template:Opentask, but there's a lot wrong with it. For one thing, it deals exclusively with laser procedures, totally bystepping "regular" pseudophakia, operative correction of strabismus and invasive therapy for recidivating retinal detachment. I lack the knowledge to do this... JFW | T@lk 19:25, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Does anyone know what the frequency of occurance of these risks are? The Trolls of Navarone 19:57, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

eye surgery

I agree - there is a total absence of discussion of retinal-vitreal issues - disorders, procedures, etc.

Feel free to lend a hand with additions.AED 05:14, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Moving stuff to 'refractive surgery'

Much of the material on this page was duplicated on Refractive surgery. IMHO, discussing refractive *and* nonrefractive surgeries here would make the page unwieldy; refractive surgery, and each of the other techniques mentioned here, can easily fill a page of their own. So I moved-and-merged most of the refractive-specific stuff from this page to refractive surgery; unfortunately that's turned this page back into a stub for the time being, for which I apologise, but it seems preferable to having two diverging articles on refractive surgery.--Calair 23:52, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • I suggest keeping this page for a brief and general overview of various ophthalmic surgeries, then adding details of the various surgeries under their own pages or under Referactive Surgery, Glaucoma, Cataract, etc. AED 04:13, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps one of the most glaring things missing is procedures and preparations. I'm perplexed as to how eye surgery can ever be done at all, since blinking seems to be an unavoidable reflex no matter how zonked out a person is...

Eye Surgery Heirachy

I came to Wiki seeking details on what I beleived to be 'Laser eye surgery' (and now understand I was actually seeking the broader Refrective Surgery) In researching i found the existing heirachy not very clear.

With specific reference to refractive surgery I beleive the heirachy should be similar to this. 'Eye Surgery' > 'Refractive Surgery' > 'Pages for individual techniques' (ALK, Lasik, Lasek, PRK etc)

I think this should be more of a placeholder page for example:

Simplify the existing:

Types of eye surgeries

   * Cataract surgery to remove an opacified lens which can be replaced with a plastic intraocular lens implant
         o Intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE)
         o Extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE)
               + Manual extraction
               + Phacoemulsification
         o YAG laser capsulotomy is used to clear the back implant surface of the cloudy posterior capsule which surrounds the lens implant
   * Glaucoma surgery to allow escape of excess fluid from the eye to lower intraocular pressure
         o Goniotomy
         o Iridotomy...

to:

   * Cataract surgery to remove an opacified lens which can be replaced with a plastic intraocular lens implant
   * Glaucoma surgery to allow escape of excess fluid from the eye to lower intraocular pressure
   * Refractive surgery aims to correct errors of refraction in the eye, reducing or eliminating the need for corrective lenses
   * Corneal Surgery
   * Vitreo-Retinal Surgery
   * Strabismus Surgery
   * Oculoplastics

And putting the individual version on a deeper level. Alternativley maybe a better navigation contents summary nearer the top with expalainations of each type further down.

What do people think of heading more that sort of direction?

cost

Shouldn't there be something about the cost of Laser Eye Surgery? If not its history, at least today? Dan 22:35, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eye muscle surgery photo

This photo doesn't resemble any strabismus surgery I've even seen. If other agree, please delete and substitute for it!—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bticho (talkcontribs) 05:21, 7 October 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I think it was added by User:EyeMD; I'll bring your comments to his attention. -AED 05:49, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This pic is from my personal collection of strabismus surgery operative photographs, taken from my camera. Here the inferior rectus muscle is going to be isolated. If the details are not clear, I will change the photo. :-) EyeMD 17:57, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got a better look at it on a larger screen -- what was throwing me off was the corneal protector. It's not as odd as I thought, I was just looking at it wrong! Still, I'll put in one of my photos for comparison. Thanks!Bticho 01:16, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops - I got the image uploaded, but can't seem to get it linked to the page. Here's the URL for someone who can get the link right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Disinserting_the_muscle.JPG Thanks again!

Intraocular vs. extraocular surgery

It seems obvious, but I'm wondering if the article should explicitly state what intraocular surgery and extraocular surgery are. -AED 03:56, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree - its a basic difference that needs to be made clear. EyeMD 05:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The page has become very unwieldy - as suggested previously, I support the moving out of particular surgical details to each of the sub-pages for glaucoma, strabismus, cataract, VR etc. EyeMD 05:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Moreover, many of the procedures listed on the page are historical only and are not being done in clinical practice nowadays. They have been superseded by safer and more effective procedures. Somebody more interested in the history of eye surgeries should write them down, coz having so many red links on the page makes it look as if the field is not covered. Overall, not many of them deserve a page of their own, as it would be at the most a paragraph of stub level, again needing a merge into eye surgery. EyeMD 05:25, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • There are a couple of ways to address the red links. One is to click on them, then create a redirect to the most appropriate article. Another is to move them to the most appropriate article. Or, we can create a proper alphabetical list in List of eye surgeries or something similar. -AED 19:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the first suggestion, its important to redirect, but making sure that it does not lead into circles, i.e. the redirect should not lead back to the page where the link was clicked. I am sure there is a wiki-term for that, but I don't know it yet. A proper alphabetical list of eye surgeries is likely a huge page - it would be a placeholder for eye surgeries. IMHO, it would lead to it being a page where it may become a very much referenced and linked to page, but with just the utility of being like a traffic policeman - "You go there, and you go there :-) I stay here!" Someone searching wikipedia for may become annoyed by frequent visits to that all encompassing page, with nothing more to show than a link to the actual surgery, which the search should have lead to directly. These are my thoughts. However, ultimately it is a good idea. EyeMD 18:07, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganisation of the content

I have reorganised the article and made quite a few changes - moved things around. Please submit your suggestions here, or better at the WP:Eye talk page :-) EyeMD 06:08, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eye surgery image - Middle Ages

Does anyone else think that the image of "Eye surgery in the Middle Ages" is silly? My first thoughts on seeing the image were "Are you kidding me?" I don't mean to be rude, but I just think that my reaction may not have been an isolated case. It seems like we could find something more...current. Arathon 00:41, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's an amusing picture and the kind of thing you would want to see in an encyclopedia if and only IF there is another more up to date picture somewhere later in the article. You would scroll to an HD picture with an average color temperature of 9300k and you'd say in your head "Yeah I figured it looked something like that..." Lets go back to the Middle Ages picture that was aforementioned. It should be aesthetically cropped in photoshop because there is a matte within a matte visual effect that is distracting from the subjects of the artwork. ```` with thanks, mmvsusaf.seanny.net — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.211.7.179 (talk) 17:33, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Opinions would be appreciated on whether this link: Refractive eye surgery video would be an appropriate addition to the article. Thanks. -- SiobhanHansa 21:29, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possible typo?

"Keratomilleusis is method of reshaping the cornea surface to change its optical power. A disc of cornea is shaved off, quickly frozen, lathe-ground, then returned to its original power."

original power does not make sense in this context. Perhaps the author meant place... as in the part of cornesa is reinserted into the eye. I may be wrong though.

Laser eye surgery in general

Having undergone laser surgery for retinal detachment I came to this article (and a few associated articles) expecting to find the answer to some questions - without success.

It would seem to me, commonsense that if a laser beam is directed at the eye to photocoagulate the retina (which is at the rear of the eye) the beam must pass through several structures - exothelium, lens, maybe iris, vitreous humour to name a few.

I would have thought repeated laser treatment of the retina could damage these other structures.

It would be appreciated if the article could explain this along with a more detailed treatment of the types of lasers as they apply to eye surgery. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oaec (talkcontribs) 07:30, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lidocaine? Quality of reference?

The only approved anesthetics for ophthalmic use, e.g. eye surgery, are Holocaine (Phenacaine) and Cocaine. Presumably Lidocaine is off-label? Reference is Merck Chemical Index, 1985. Shjacks45 (talk) 11:06, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
