In the 80's I responded to an advert for custom-fitted earmold headsets. The provider was in NYC. I sent for a molding kit which consisted of a two-part mixture which formed a plastic which was cured in the both ear canals. I sent the auditory meatus impressions back to NYC and for $80-100 (depending on the quality of sound transducers) they delivered a comfortable headset. It produced high-fidelity sound from any feed, e.g. walkperson radios, CD players, public service radios, etal. I used the headset for many years, requiring the replacement of several transducers. It worked very well when jogging, working out and working in high noise environments (riding busses or working medical support at motor race tracks). It would also work well when worn under a helmet (while riding motorcycles) or large hearing protectors while using high-noise power equipment. After my dog chewed up one mold, the set required replacement. I bought several generic replacements (soft rubber or crushable foam) but they were never were as comfortable as the custom molds. The NYC business is long gone.

It seems that the "audio professionals" AKA cartel, have made custom earmolds much less accessible and much more expensive for the consumer. I "Googled" earmolds and found many sites that told me to "contact my local hearing professional", they all cost many times my $80-100 my 1980's investment.--W8IMP (talk) 01:43, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I felt that this article might benefit from a section on ear scanning as it is an up and coming advancement to the original earmold. Lindseykoehn (talk) 22:49, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
