Isn't the point about developmental disorders that although adults may be diagnosed with them, they are likely to be conditions present since childhood? So that if one were to go for a diagnosis of a developmental disorder, it would help if one were accompanied by some one who knew one well as a child. Article Doesn't Explain What Makes A Disorder "developmental"

I felt that it described it fairly well. It includes disorders that disrupt development, such as speech, reading, etc, and it gives links to pages with examples. I agree with the comment above. The article has good information but I think you might want to do some more research to give it more depth and validity. To add to the above comment, I think one place that could use more depth in the article is the description of the Emergence of Developmental Disorders. The points and examples are good, but they could be elaborated on more to help give a better background on the subject, and explain the points being made more thoroughly. Also, a minor change could be to make the subcategories in ASD, ADD/ADHD, and Down Syndrome in the same order. Prygg (talk) 18:17, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that the autism spectrum disorders should be explained more in-depth. For example, Asperger's Syndrome and Bipolar disorder are not even mentioned in this section. These disorders are very common autism spectrum disorders that many suffer from, and many cases which simply go undiagnosed. I also do not like the use of the word "disease" in this article. Emotional and mental disorders are not diseases like the common cold which can be caught and cured in one felled swoop. These syndromes are far beyond that. But you guys have a good start! Student Editing Plan

The topic is already very broad, and our plan involves focusing on certain developmental disorders than are more common. We will also include a brief intro on developmental disorders in broad terms. One of the developmental disorders we will focus on is Autism since it is one of the three most common developmental disorders. We will focus on the signs of Autism and how a child with autism develops. We will also focus on ways to live with Autism and how the brain works with Autism. Another developmental disorder we will focus on is Down syndrome. Concerning Down syndrome we will focus on a little about the history, and how someone is diagnosed and how to cope with the symptoms. ADD/ADHD is another very common developmental disorder. I have read your intro and it does give a broad overview of the topic. Some of the sentence structures are fragments that should be combined to form more complete thoughts. I have edited a couple sentences in the first part of your page, but more editing in needed. One example of where to rephrase would be, "Social phobias, particularly, is 13 years." Based on the context of the previous sentence, I am guessing you mean the average age of diagnosis, but it should should still be grammatically correct. New section about theories on causes of developmental disorders?

I am new to Wikipedia and working on a project for my class. I found this page and wondered if there could be a section focused on different theories about the causes of developmental disorders? I believe it would be beneficial for the page to include this kind of information. I have looked around a little and have not found it anywhere else. If it is ok, I'd like to begin a new section for it on this page beginning with some theories about how traumatization and sterss in early childhood affects develpoment. Article should talk about Pervasive developmental disorder, Specific developmental disorder, differences between the two, and the sub-types.

New Editing Content Plan

Hello, I'm a new user taking a class on The Digital Society: Disability Studies. As part of my final project this semester, I have chosen to work on this Wiki page as a part of the WikiProject: Disabilities.

Before I begin to add sections, edit current copy, and provide reliable sources, please let me know if there are any concerns or specific action items I would need to focus on first. I will be writing and using terms in accordance with the updated 2016 disability style guide by the National Center on Disability and Journalism (http://ncdj.org/style-guide/), as well as Wikipedia's quality standards.

Here is how I plan to address this page in particular: 1) I think it would be a good idea for this entry to be written from Social Model point-of-view. 2) Currently the page is written from the medical model point-of-view, listing specific types of medical diagnoses and then providing only 2 (ASD and ADHD). However, these two sections are not consistent in their layout with ASD covering Diagnosis, In the brain, Symptoms and Treatment; while ADHD only covers Treatment Options, and Symptoms. 3) The rest of the diagnoses are not covered and only 4 are listed in the "See also" section. I think it would be best — as I work towards the social model of this page — that ASD and ADHD are listed in the "See also" section only — along with the missing diagnoses listed in the 1st paragraph — and let those specific Wiki pages deal with the medical model issues such as symptoms, treatment, etc. 4) Often, Wiki entries skew to a Western Medicine point-of-view. I will add a section on research that I am doing to include broader cultural specificity of Developmental Disorders. This new section will include information from Africa, Asia, and European cultures. This allows readers to learn additional information outside of a systemic bias toward Euro-American models .

Would the page moderators prefer I post my changes here before adding to the page itself? Or will it be OK to just begin updating and providing detailed explanations as I work? If I don't hear otherwise in a few days, I will begin to make changes directly to the entry and encourage further discussion on the talk page if there are any issues regarding the edits.
