Problem with Google Earth placemarker which references this article: The placemarker is actually centered over an ancient amphitheatre (possibly one of the oldest in Campania) next door to the Villa Vergiliana. The Cumae which the article refers to is actually to the north of this placemarker, on an acropolis.

This article is awful - there are so many mistakes and misunderstandings. Starting from the "sanctuary of the Sibyl" - it has been reinterpreted as part of the strategic system of the town! Anyways, I'm the head of the Cumae group in our Archaeology Dept. Project - Greek Colonization. We're going there in a couple of weeks, and I've read all the books that have to do with this city. I'll write a full, in-depth article this summer, after exams!--Keltica 19:56, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Translated page?

Everything below the history marker appears to have been translated from another language, badly. The style and format are garbled and distinctly European. From context clues and untranslated bits, it seems like this was cribbed from an Italian version of the article. This is particularly bad in the section concerning the Purifier, which stops making sense after about a sentence. I would suggest that the whole thing be either retranslated by an actual speaker or rewritten from scratch. Sense words not making. 129.237.90.15 (talk) 07:11, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate/underexplained wikilink?

Para 2 of Early History begins with:

"The Greeks were planted upon the earlier dwellings of indigenous, Iron Age peoples whom they supplanted; a memory of them was preserved as cave-dwellers named Cimmerians . . ."

"Cimmerians" in the Article is (as above) linked to the Wikipedia article of that name. However, my reading of it suggests to me (perhaps incorrectly) no connection between those invaders of Anatolia and the indigenes of Cumae. I suggest that if I'm wrong and there is a connection, it needs to be mentioned, with citations: conversely if there isn't, the name here should be de-linked and the mere coincidence explained as not implying such a connection. This seems to be a reference to the mythical Cimmerians briefly mentioned in the Cimmerians article as A "mythical" people also named Cimmerians are described in Book 11, 14 of Homer's Odyssey as living beyond the Oceanus, in a land of fog and darkness, at the edge of the world and the entrance of Hades. The Strabo reference cites Ephorus of Cyme as placing Cimmerians here, apparently because of the area's connections with the underworld. It would probably take shuffling the Cimmerians article text a bit to be able to make this link more specific to these Homeric Cimmerians. 192.4.0.12 (talk) 20:16, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
