Complications

Technically the insertion of a chest tube is creating a pneumothorax, but the suction will relieve that. Pneumothorax is not really a complication of chest tubes, and chest tubes are the treatment for pneumothorax. DocJohnny 18:18, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

One complication that can occur is clogging of the chest tube. When that occurs the blood or air that is intended to be drained accumulates in the chest. This can be life threating, or at the very least, can prolong the patients recovery. Chest tube stripping and tube milking can be carried out to address this, but its not always helpful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.228.183.121 (talk) 22:52, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

'Lack of patient co-operation'

In the contra-indications for this procedure, 'lack of patient cooperation' is listed, which I find peculiar. Whilst obviously the patient must consent, except in extremis where competence to give or refuse consent is not present, this applies to all medical and surgical procedures, and is not itself a contraindication, but a pre-requisite of any examination, investigation or procedure. To refer to lack of consent as a contraindication is entirely peculiar for medical literature and, as far as I'm aware, this doesn't appear to follow the style of Wikipedia medical articles.
