Talk:Cervical collar

From WikiProjectMed

The content covers most of the important aspects of the topic but I wanted to clarify on a few things (with the appropriate citations) : that C-collars support the neck by immobilizing it. Rigid cervical collars allow for about 30 degrees of freedom in flexion, extension and rotation. Clarify that the risk of increased intracranial pressure is from decreased venous return due to compression of the jugular veins. Include the use of the NEXUS Criteria and the Canadian C-Spine rules to clear a patient for cervical collar removal. Link the “Clearing a cervical collar” page. Clarify that the randomized clinical trials on C-collars are small scale. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sma2023 (talkcontribs) 05:38, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This page really should contain some history of the c-collar as it's use today is disputed because of sparse evidence.--83.249.214.175 (talk) 18:11, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

== Evaluate the drafted changes ==
Lead
The lead paragraph is formatted nicely, providing detail about all aspects of the article without being overly detailed. The only suggestion I would make here, would be to include more information about clearing a cervical collar in the body of the article. It is briefly mentioned in the lead that the use of NEXUS criteria and/or the Canadian C-spine rules to clear a cervical collar and determine the need for imaging. In the body it could be useful to briefly outline what these criteria are? Have they been evaluated for safety and efficacy?
Content
I think the content added to existing sections, greatly expanded the value and detail for somebody looking to study the topic especially in terms of the risks and complications of applying a cervical collar to liberally. I think though the most value added to this article was the addition of the history, other uses, and application and care sections. Everybody thinks of cervical collars from the perspective of trauma and concern for cervical spine injury but the fact that you found information about studies into different applications is very interesting especially in cervical radiculopathy and sleep apnea. And then the application and care section is important especially if somebody needs one for an extended period of time. It is important that a caregiver, healthcare worker, or patient knows how to adequately take care of the area making sure it is clean and the area intact. Overall, the content added greatly increased the value of the article, only suggestion would be to add a section about the NEXUS criteria and Canadian C-spine rules for clearing the collar and the need for imaging.
Tone and Balance
Everything added was neutral especially when considering the topic of whether or not they are effective in reaching the outcomes intended by their use. The risks and benefits of the cervical collar was outlined effectively, leaving room for reader interpretation and opinion on what should be done in certain situations. Future research can be followed and added as necessary if any more studies reveal whether or not the cervical collars do more harm or benefit to the patient.
Sources and References
All the content added is backed by sources that are referenced and all links work. Even when using small studies from primary sources in the 'other uses' section, this was mentioned in the article that these applications are less studied and research is limited and smaller scale. This introduces the topic but also signifies that there are knowledge gaps in these areas that need to be further explored and solidified.
Organization
Overall I thought all content was well organize, concise, grammatically correct, and well written. The only edit I might make is to rearrange the order of the sections and potentially place the 'application and care' section as the 2nd section below 'Types'.
Images and Media
I think there were already a handful of useful images on this page so there wasn't much room for improvement in this area anyway but I saw you added an image to the gallery, and I think the more examples the better.
Overall
This article is significantly more complete than it was previously, even branching out into topics other than cervical collar use for trauma and cervical spine injury. The only additional information I would add is detailing a little more about the NEXUS criteria and Canadian C-spine rules as it is mentioned in the Lead but not in the body of the article. Also potentially rearranging the sections to make the content flow a little better, but that is if we are really picking at straws to suggest edits. I think the flow is just fine the way it is. I think this article has been updated and improved greatly to impart more knowledge about cervical collars than was present previously. Hypnotoad2022 (talk) 06:07, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
