Controversy?

Jumping through Wikilinks, I read at the Ira Hayes entry that Mundy apparently, at one point, was interpreted as saying that non-whites didn't make good Marines (that's not exactly what it says, but I think it's a somewhat acceptable approximation). If he made racist comments while he was occupying one of the country's top military post, it would seem that would be worthy of inclusion. If it's just something stupid he said back when he was a lieutenant, it's probably best left in the past. So, I'm curious. Anyone have more information on this? Yeah, Mundy was in the "60 Minutes" TV show back in the early 90's when he was the Commandant of the Marines (a FULL GENERAL at the time), and he said that minorities couldn't shoot, navigate or swim as well as their white counterparts. 60 Minutes did a piece on discrimination in the military at a time when Bruce Yamashita was suing the Marine Corp for discrimination. It was recorded all on TV. I guess you can say that Mundy is a guy that says what is on his mind: He calls it like he sees it. Apparently, Sen. Inouye and the old WWII veterans from the 442nd Regional Combat Team weren't too thrilled about what Mundy said on TV.

You can read all about it in the following internet webpages: http://www.house.gov/list/speech/as00_faleomavaega/sp_asia.html http://starbulletin.com/2003/04/20/news/story5.html

Also, Yamashita has a book out titled, Fighting Tradition: A Marine's Journey to Justice, which discusses his experiences as a marine. I haven't read the book yet, but plan to check it out from the library. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.217.131.99 (talkcontribs) 16:51, July 14, 2006 (UTC)

What I can't understand is if the non-whites were so incompetent as Mundy claims, then why did his generation of Marines get their butt's kicked by the Vietnamese and the Koreans during the Vietnamese and Korean conflicts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.140.229.221 (talkcontribs) 01:21, July 15, 2006 (UTC)
Maybe because, after WWII, just like after WWI, the U.S. stopped building up militarily and did not get much new gear or equipment, and did not get a lot of new soldiers and marines. Maybe because it wasn't "The Koreans" who were kicking their butts, it was the Korean, the Chinese, and the Russians together who were fighting against us in Korea. Do a little research before you make statements like this, that's what wikipedia is for. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.219.76.107 (talkcontribs) 02:31, December 12, 2006 (UTC)
Slavs were only envolved in an advising role. So the question still stands: why Americans, mainly white ones, get the shit out of their asses by Orientals. One tentative answer: they knew very well they were fighting a unfair and unnecessary war. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.19.175.82 (talkcontribs) 09:41, May 19, 2007 (UTC)

This isn't a place to debate what you think of his professional opinion. He spoke his opinion about why the Corps wasn't meeting its quota of minority officers under the Pentagon's 12-12-6 program, and he was saying the Corps couldn't find enough Black and Hispanic candidates who wanted to be an officer, and could also shoot and swim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:A:4B00:6C3:7C43:4B4B:1F7C:1084 (talk) 22:34, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Awards - infobox vs. Awards section

There is disagreement between what is listed in the infobox and the Awards section ribbon display. The external biography link doesn't work so I can't look up which is correct.

The infobox says he was awarded the Legion of Merit twice, once with a Combat/Valor "V" device. The Awards section has it as one award (without any devices). The awards section does have the Navy Commendation Medal awarded twice (at least one of which was awarded with a "V" device) - is that the source of the confusion?

Further, the infobox lists the Defense Superior Service Medal, but the awards section does not.

Which is correct? Gecko G (talk) 18:34, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Marine Corps University Foundation link does say:
"For his service, he holds seventeen U.S. and foreign personal decorations and ten unit and general service awards." a Total of 27 match's the Awards section
In the photograph, which is undated, his ribbons are (top row): Legion of Merit (with no devices), Bronze Star w/"V" device; second row: Purple Heart, Navy Commendation w/1 award star & "V" device; 3rd row: CAR, NPUC, NUC; 4th row: NDSM w/1 star, AFEM, VSM w/2 stars; bottom row: SSR, and the 3 Vietnamese awards. The 5 DSMs were all awarded to him at retirement so they are not in the photo. As I said the photo is undated, but the Legion of Merit has no devices. If there was a second awarding of the LoM it would have to of been the one for Valor as no "V" device is found on the one in the picture - and it would be very newsworthy for a 4-star general (which he already is in the picture) to do something worthy of a LoM w/"V" device.
The military times Hall of Valor database only lists one Legion of Merit awarding (http://projects.militarytimes.com/citations-medals-awards/recipient.php?recipientid=39662).
I did find [[1]], which seems to agree with the Awards section.
Taking all of the above together, I think it's safe to say that the infobox is wrong, so I've changed it.
