Mandate
CADTH is Canada’s drug and health technology agency. It was established by Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial governments in 1989 to be a trusted source of independent information and advice for the country’s publicly funded health care systems.
Role
Health administrators and policy experts rely on CADTH to help inform their decisions about the life cycle management of the drugs, devices, and services used to prevent, diagnose, and treat medical conditions.
CADTH Products and Services
Each year, CADTH responds to hundreds of evidence requests. In general, CADTH’s work can be grouped into the following evidence product categories:
- Horizon Scans: CADTH scans the horizon and alerts health care systems about new or emerging health technologies that could impact the delivery of care in Canada.
- Reference Lists: CADTH’s team of medical librarians searches the published and unpublished (i.e., grey) literature to identify the available evidence as well as any gaps in the scientific literature.
- Health Technology Reviews: CADTH provides decision-makers with independent assessments of drugs and other health technologies. Assessments consist of one, or a combination, of the following: an environmental scan, a rapid review, a clinical (or systematic) review, an economic review, or a review of patient perspectives. They may also include an assessment of the legal, ethical, social, implementation, environmental, and policy implications of a specific health technology. Recommendations on the appropriate use of health technologies are provided where applicable.
- Reimbursement Reviews: CADTH provides drug funding recommendations to Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial public drug programs. Recommendations are based on comprehensive assessments of the clinical and pharmacoeconomic evidence, as well as input from pharmaceutical companies, clinicians, and patient groups. Recommendations cover oncology drugs, non-oncology drugs, plasma protein products, and CAR-T and gene therapies. Where appropriate, CADTH recommends the appropriate place in therapy for drugs within a therapeutic class.
- Scientific Advice: CADTH offers pharmaceutical companies advice on their early drug development plans from a health technology assessment perspective. CADTH Scientific Advice helps industry optimize the time to market for new therapies.
CADTH Overview
Governance
CADTH is an independent, not-for-profit organization. Its 13-member Board of Directors is composed of an independent chair; a regional distribution of federal, provincial, and territorial representatives; and non-jurisdictional representatives from health systems, academia, and the public. Directors are elected by the Members of the Corporation, who are the Deputy Ministers of Health for participating federal, provincial, and territorial governments.
