for the wrong purposes?

So if you take it for the right purposes no matter how much you take you won't hallucinate? Also, NPOV? Right and wrong are matters of opinion, particularly concerning the proper purpose of something. The article should say that excess dosages beyond X amount is likely to cause hallucinations.75.133.90.126 (talk) 08:19, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree to a point. There is both a legal and a medical consensus of what the right and wrong way to use a prescription drug is. But right and wrong DO imply opinion. Perhaps a better way to put it would be that it MAY cause hallucinations when abused. Abuse is a more technical term, and more descriptive. I dont think its necessary to go into exactly how it might be abused to cause hallucinations and in fact I dont know this. But it is the case that abuse does not necessarily imply large doses. Sometimes its simply how its taken. For instance, amphetamines and opiates ,medically, are usually taken orally. When abused however, they are often crushed and snorted. This causes them to be rapidly absorbed. 20mg of instant release amphetamine twice daily is typically used to treat ADHD. The effect when abused is rather different however. First, the abuser probably does not need the drug,so its going to have a much more dramatic and different effect. The patient that needs it has low levels of dopamine and norepinephrine which is boosted by the amphetamine. The otherwise normal abuser does not. In the ADHD patient, the drug serves to bring those up to more normal levels. Abusers however are often not content even with that. A 20mg dose of amphetamine usually has an onset within a half hour or so and lasts around 4-6 hours. Abusers will often crush the pills and inhale them. The onset is almost immediate. The maximum concentration in their blood is much higher, and the effects more intense.
