The Global Warming Portal

If anyone has any comments regarding the Global Warming Portal, feel free to voice them on this discussion page. I take ALL criticism constructively and my only desire is to improve Portal Design. If you have any knowledgable contributions to offer WikiProject Global warming, please feel free to contribute or contact the project for discussion as appropriate Wiki User 68 (talk) 23:19, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rename Global warming

The title should be 'Global warming' with a small w. It is standard in wikipedia to use small letters in titles unless the letter is part of a formal name with the capital. I notice there i a Portal:Global warming that redirects to here, it should be the other way round. Dmcq (talk) 18:08, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, per WP:CAPS. Pjwst6 (talk) 01:57, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Precis on Global warming

Just a couple of points. 1) It might be helpful to refer to Athropogenic Global Warming, to distinguish it from natural, cyclical global warming periods. 2) It might also be helpful to illustrate the different timescale of pre and post industrial global warming trends. Where is Portal:Renewable energy in related portals section?

Portal:Renewable energy should be add in Related portals section. Just my two cents.

  1. ) Renewable energy commercialization is a trend in the 21st century. Renewable energy commercialization is one of the solution for many conventional fossil-fuel based energy development caused problems and concerns. In that perspective, Portal:Energy does not cover Portal:Renewable energy.
  2. ) Many large fossil fuel producers and consumers also are large renewable energy producers and consumers. e.g. USA, EU, China, and India, etc.

Warming Island Images

I noticed that images for Warming Island haven't been updated in a while, so I went over to landsat and took a screenshot of how Warming Island looks currently and embedded that into a frame with the original three images. Hopefully we can replace that to have the most current, up-to-date information regarding this island.

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   07:31, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Learning With Ameer: You'll be welcome to join projects such as WikiProject Portals and WikiProject Climate change. Just have a look there to see what's going on, or leave a message on their talk pages. Certes (talk) 11:55, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I am working on an article about the history of climate change. Learning With Ameer (talk) 12:02, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe add sea level rise to general articles?

Somewhat recently got the good article status and quite an important topic. Femke Nijsse (talk) 19:04, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Portal updated

This portal has been updated and expanded:

  • Overhauled portal with modernized wiki markup using transclusion from articles to display content, which provides readers with current, up-to-date information.
  • New articles have been added to the portal.
  • Additional updates, cleanup and layout changes have been performed. North America1000 19:02, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Articles

The following articles are presently being displayed in the portal using transclusion from articles. Consensus at VPP has approved using transclusion templates in portals, which provides users with up-to-date content that is verbatim to that in articles. The instrumental temperature record is a record of temperatures within Earth's climate based on direct measurement of air temperature and ocean temperature. Instrumental temperature records do not use indirect reconstructions using climate proxy data such as from tree rings and marine sediments. Instead, data is collected from thousands of meteorological stations, buoys and ships around the globe. Areas that are densely populated tend to have a high density of measurement points. In contrast, temperature observations are more spread out in sparsely populated areas such as polar regions and deserts, as well as in many regions of Africa and South America. In the past, thermometers were read manually to record temperatures. Nowadays, measurements are usually connected with electronic sensors which transmit data automatically. Surface temperature data is usually presented as anomalies rather than as absolute values. A temperature anomaly is presented compared to a reference value, also called baseline period or long-term average, usually a period of 30 years. For example, a commonly used baseline period is the time period from 1951 to 1980. (Full article...)

Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier (/ˈfʊri, -iər/; French: [fuʁje]; 21 March 1768 – 16 May 1830) was a French mathematician and physicist born in Auxerre and best known for initiating the investigation of Fourier series, which eventually developed into Fourier analysis and harmonic analysis, and their applications to problems of heat transfer and vibrations. The Fourier transform and Fourier's law of conduction are also named in his honour. Fourier is also generally credited with the discovery of the greenhouse effect. (Full article...)

Move to Climate change

@Efbrazil, Anthony Appleyard, and Northamerica1000: Following this morning's move, the portal has redlinks and its talk page has been left behind. I would clean up myself but I'm unsure which title we want to use to collect the various pages. If we choose "Climate change" then we should also edit mentions of the name in the title bar and elsewhere. (I'm assuming from reviewing it on archive sites that the deleted old Portal:Climate change was simply a redirect with no significant history. If not then we should consider merging its content instead.) Certes (talk) 10:32, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Was there any discussion about this, or was it a unilateral move? I don't understand why portal names have to be moved around if all of the work is not going to be completed, leaving readers with some broken pages and links. Also note to the right that the portal link at the module page has not been changed ({{portal|Global warming}}), still stating that it links to the Global warming portal, when it actually now links to this portal. North America1000 11:22, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be unilateral and unexpected. I've tried to patch up the portal as best I can. Most of what I've changed replaces "Global warming" by {{PAGENAME}} etc. so should work whatever the portal is called. Exceptions, which we should probably revert if the move is reversed, are these edits: 1 (partially), 2, 3, 4 where magic words aren't acceptable. Certes (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Northamerica1000: @Certes: Thanks for moving this forward, I realized it is complicated. The move is clean up after the article "global warming" was renamed to "climate change". It's a complicated move because of the many edits required, but should not be controversial now that the page has been renamed (the page renaming was controversial and has a long discussion associated). It's also fairly straight forward as all mentions of "Global warming" should simply be replaced with "Climate change" except in rare circumstances (previously climate change pointed to global warming, this simply reverses the priority of the terms). The talk page and all the rest should be part of the move. Let me know if I can help- I made this as an administrator request because I was following wikipedia guidance on portal renames, otherwise I would have tried it myself.
