Prognosis | Good if confined to ovary[1] |
Frequency | Around 5% of serous ovarian cancers[1] |
Low grade serous carcinoma of the ovary (LGSCO) is a type of ovarian cancer that typically presents with pressure symptoms due to its mass effect.[1][2] It may present with ascites.[1] The average age of presentation is around 43 years, 10 years younger than the average age of high-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary (HGSCO).[1] There may be a previous history of a serous borderline tumor.[3] In 2020 the World Health Organization defined it as "a non-invasive, low-grade, proliferative serous epithelial neoplasm".[3]
LGSCO is pathologically distinct from HGSCO, and the cause is unknown.[1] It frequently occurs in both ovaries.[1] Risk factors include not having children and hormone replacement therapy.[2] Older age at first birth, oral contraceptive, and a greater number of children appear associated with a lower risk.[2] When confined to the ovary the outcome is very good.[1] It generally has a better survival rate than HGSCO, though not so good if diagnosed before age 35 years.[2]
Around 80% are diagnosed at an advanced stage.[2] They comprise of around 5% of serous ovarian cancers.[1]
