Liberty is an unincorporated community in Lubbock County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 10 in 2000. It is located within the Lubbock metropolitan area.
History
The Lawson, Hettler, and Cone families were among the first settlers in the Liberty area. The community had two businesses, a general store, and a co-op gin that processed more than 35,000 bales of cotton in the 1980s. Its population was 10 from 1990 through 2000.[2]
Geography
Liberty is located on Farm to Market Road 1294, 8 mi (13 km) northwest of Idalou and 12 mi (19 km) northeast of Lubbock in north-central Lubbock County.[2]
Education
The hamlet grew up around a school and was one of Lubbock County's 26 school districts by 1927. The county formed the New Deal Independent School District in 1935 by combining the Liberty school with others in Center, Monroe, Grovesville, and Caldwell. Like many other schools in the county, Liberty School served as a gathering point for community activities and church services.[2] Today, Liberty is served by the Idalou Independent School District.
