Hurlwood is an unincorporated community in Lubbock County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 115 in 2000. It is located within the Lubbock metropolitan area.
History
The Hurlwood area grew up around a railroad switch in 1924. Its name is an amalgamation of the surnames of two settlers: Claude B. Hurlbut and W.M. Wood. A post office was established at Hurlwood in January 1926. In 1940, the settlement had two gins and two grocery stores, a grain elevator, a blacksmith shop, a garage, a poultry store, and a church serving 50 inhabitants. When World War II started, the Reese Air Force Base built an aviation training camp in Hurlwood. The population was reported as 185 in 1960, 105 in 1970, and 115 from 1980 through 2000.[2] The population increased to 152 in 2010.[3]
Geography
Hurlwood is located on Texas State Highway 114 on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, 12 mi (19 km) west of Lubbock in western Lubbock County, near the Hockley County line.[2]
Education
Hurlwood had its own school in 1928. This and three neighboring districts joined the Frenship Independent School District in 1935.[2]
