Errors regarding the Greenlandic IPA

Aluu tamaasa, I'm here to point out several errors on this page regarding the pronunciations on this page. For starters, in the Greenlandic alphabet (excluding the loan one), there are 3 vowels by default: /a, i, u/ However, here are some rules when it comes to Greenlandic vowels: The vowels /a, i, u/ are lowered to [ɑ, ɜ, ɔ], respectively, before uvular consonants /q, ʁ/; and that's it, nothing else!

Now on that page, there is a MAJOR error with the consonants section. In Greenlandic, whenever the consonants /ɣ, l, ʁ,/ are doubled/geminated, they become their voiceless counterparts, which are /x, ɬ, χ/. It would not make any sense for /ɣ/ to become /ç/, because the voiced counterpart of /ç/ is /ʝ/, and /ʝ/ does not exist in Greenlandic.

Other than that, the rest of the page is fine. So here are the changes to that page I am requesting: Replace /çː/ with /xː/, and remove the sections on /ʉ/ and /y/, because they do not exist in Greenlandic by default. The only case where those two vowels ever could exist, is if it was a loanword from Danish or another Scandinavian language. JSaffiooq (talk) 17:34, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article Greenlandic phonology does not entirely agree with you. It says in section "Vowels" /i/ is rounded to [y] before labial consonants. /u/ is fronted to [ʉ] between two coronal consonants, and in section "Morphophonology" Geminate /ɣ/ is pronounced [çː ~ xː], which I take to mean dialectal or individual variation. These are cited to scholarly sources (though the list of works cited doesn't appear to have been brought over from Greenlandic language - I may attend to that when I have a moment). The sources on the Greenlandic phonology page may suggest so, but there's one factor you haven't considered: government sources.
Oqaasileriffik is the official Greenlandic language secretariat, and on their IPA converter, text-to-speech program, and including their series of videos called "Oqaasilerisa", geminate /ɣ/ is [xː], and no [y] nor [ʉ] is mentioned anywhere on that website.
Yes, you are right. Every speaker is different.
However, I'm talking about the standard phonology here. Simply put, I just don't want people trying to learn the Greenlandic language to be misinformed.
If you want to put a note regarding, [y], [ʉ], and [çː], go ahead and do so.

I haven't considered anything but what's in our articles: I have no particular knowledge or indeed interest in the question. If you want to edit the Help page, go ahead. The purpose of that page is to assist anybody wanting to know how to transcribe Greenlandic into IPA, or to read IPA transcriptions of Greenlandic. Anybody that is trying to use it to learn the language is in the wrong place.
