Tomoko Mukaiyama, Japanese-Dutch pianist, artist and director is known for her multimedia performances in which she embarks on a sensory adventure together with her audience. Different disciplines, their forms and styles, are used on an equal basis. Recurring themes in her work are gender inequality and the relationship with our natural environment, often elaborated from the possibilities and frictions of a local situation [1]. Her work is performed in mainstream art centers such as the Lincoln Center New York [2], the Paris Opera [3] and museums [4], but also via online platforms or on streets and squares, in private homes, in the dunes of Terschelling and at the fish market of Seto (JP).
Biography
Tomoko was born in Shingu in the prefecture Wakayama, Japan.[5]. Tomoko has lived in Amsterdam since the early 1990s, she is the widow of photographer and writer Philip Mechanicus, who died in 2005. Together they had a daughter, Kiriko[6].
Tomoko studied piano at the Musashino Music College in Tokyo, at the University of Indiana (Bloomington School of Music) and at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. She took private lessons in improvisation with pianist and composer Micha Mengelberg. Since 2020 she has been taking private lessons in electronic composition with the composer Yannis Kyriakides.
In the 1990s, Tomoko presented herself as a pianist in the Dutch and international ensemble and recital culture[7]. Through her playing, choice of repertoire, the dresses she wears and her interaction with the audience, it becomes clear that for her every concert is, always already, a multimedia expression for a multi-sensory, unrepeatable experience. Based on this idea, she inspires many composers and premieres their work (including Karen Tanaka, Alexander Raskatov [8], Frederic Rzewski, Louis Andriessen [9], Maxim Shalygin [10]).
Artistic development
As a pianist, Tomoko is developing into an artist and director and is steadily building her own oeuvre [11]. She examines structures and conventions of the recital and asks herself what they do and can do in the creative process (For you, 2005). She finds new possibilities to integrate spatiality within a concert through the use of objects, images and light. She abolishes the classical difference between composer, performer and audience; in each of her works their relationship is redefined. Tomoko thus creates a comprehensive and open artistic form that gives her the freedom to combine music, architecture, dance, film, visual arts, photography and fashion with social themes. She uses dramaturgical-musical techniques to bring together the social and artistic and to get a grip on the resonance between different disciplines and the role they play in creating the musical en narrative line of a performance (pianist [12], 2019; KUMANO [13], 2021; SADO [14], 2023).
To express her ideas about multimedia performance in all its diversity, Tomoko uses the concepts of installation-performance and music-cinema.
In an installation-performance, the spatial element becomes important. The performances are, as it were, designed ethical-aesthetic worlds. Here the audience is part of the scenography (the thematic, musical, visual and spatial elements that form a performance). Ethical questions (about our relationship with each other and with an environment) and aesthetic questions (about what we observe and what affects us) go together (wasted [15], 2009; Nocturne [16], 2011; figurante [17], 2023).
Music-cinema are multimedia performances via livestream. It is a form of performance in which the creation of music, sound, images and film are performed as much as possible in real time to preserve the tension and creative indeterminacy of the live performance (A live Vol. 1 [18], 2020; TWO – in transit Hara Museum [19], 2021).
Tomoko gives concerts, produces installation-performances, films and music-cinema streams. The openness of the artistic form of her work is affirmed in collaborations with very diverse artists, such as Marina Abramović [20], Merzbow, Jiří Kylián [21], Michael Gordon [22] and Toyo Ito [23]. Her deep involvement with gender inequality and women in the arts has led to the start of projects and debates in which she has an advisory role. In close consultation with professionals and scientists, she investigates artistic, (music-) technological and philosophical aspects of her work. Tomoko works with partners in the Netherlands, Japan, Mexico and Colombia.
Awards
In 1991 Tomoko won the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Award [24]and in 1993 she received the Muramatsu Prize for outstanding musical talent. In 2014 she received the Dioraphte dance prize for the production Shirokuro[25]. In 2017 she received the Japan Dance Forum Award [26] for the production La Mode and HOME.
Organisations
In 2007, the Tomoko Mukaiyama Foundation (TMF) was founded. Through the foundation, Tomoko produces multimedia performances independently or in collaborations. The foundation is supported by, among others, the Performing Arts Fund NL.
The Multus Foundation (MF) was founded in 2015 for performances in Japan. MF is supported by various Japanese government agencies.
In 2020, Culture All Nippon (CAN) was founded by Tomoko in collaboration with Hiroko Tsuboi-Friedman, UNESCO associate in the field of artistic expression and diversity. CAN is a network organization with the aim of promoting the arts in Japan by supporting artists and arts policy through organizing meetings, lectures and discussions[27]

- ^ The city of Shingu is located at the mouth of the Kumano River. Kumano is also the name of the surrounding area, known for its overwhelming nature, countless holy places, temples and pilgrimage routes from pre-modern Japan. It plays a major role in Tomoko's love for nature and ritual and is a source of inspiration for the 2021 performance of the same name.
