The demon Tarakasura had wreaked havoc in the universe, and only the son of god Shiva could slay him, but Shiva had turned to yogic ways after the death of his first wife, Sati. Kama was thus instructed by the gods to make Shiva fall in love again. Kama went to Mount Kailash with Rati and Vasanta, and shot his love-arrows at Shiva. Wounded by Kama's arrows, Shiva becomes attracted to Parvati, the reincarnation of Sati, realizing that Kama had done this, burns Kama by a glance of his third eye.[1][2][3]

Rati, Being in total grief because of his death, She undergoes penance, She pleads with Parvati to reconcile, Parvati consoled Rati, Telling her that Kama will be reborn as Pradyumna, Parvati advises Rati, to be reborn as Mayavati and wait in Shambara's kitchen. Shiva blesses Rati with Kama's resurrection.[4][5]

Rati then takes the form of Sambara's cook, and In some other puranas, the form of Sambara's wife, Mayadevi. Rati in the form of Mayadevi, had never had intercourse with Shambara, Instead after Kama was gone, She took an illusionary form to seduce Shambara, Mayadevi had never had intercourse with Shambara or had never slept with him.[5]

Nurturing of Pradyumna and Battle with Shambara

According to the Srimad Bhagvatam 10th Canto, Chapter 55[6], and the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Chapter 6, 131 to 140, and the Vishnu Purana, Chapter XXVIII[7] Shiva Advises Rati to Reincarnate as Mayavati and wait, Shambara finds out that Pradyumna was born and kidnaps him in the form of Satyabhama, He then throws Pradyumna into the ocean assuming that he had died, but a huge fish swallows him, and later some fishermen catch the fish and gift it to Shambara, Shambara calls Mayavati to make it.[8]

Mayavati is given the fish, and slices it, but to her amazement she finds a baby, Mayavati decides to nurture the baby, She takes care of the child and raises him, she then teaches him the art of war and mahāmāyā vidyā, Mayavati later reveals to Pradyumna that she is Rati. Rati advises him to kill Shambara, Pradyumna goes to war with Shambara, and slays him.[1][6][7]
