Martha Conway (born 1964) is an American author known for her Ohio-based historical fiction novels, including 2014 North American Book Award for Historical Fiction winner, Thieving Forest.[1] and New York Times Book Review Editor’s choice, The Underground River[2]. Her first novel, 12 Bliss Street, was nominated for an Edgar Award[3].

Biography

Conway was born in 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio[4], and is the sixth of seven sisters[3]. Her novels Underground River, Thieving Forest, and The Physician’s Daughter comprise a trilogy of historical dramas set in the Ohio area during significant moments in US History[5]. Conway’s short fiction has been published in The Quarterly, Epoch, Massachusetts Review, Carolina Quarterly, the Iowa Review, Folio, and others[3]. In 2017, she appeared on CBS to discuss her novel Underground River[6]. She currently resides in San Francisco[3], where she teaches creative writing at Stanford University Continuing Studies Program in Creative Writing[7]
