Project

Since this project has been inactive for a while, I hope that we can continue where the project left off. First off, we need more people to help improve articles so anybody who's interested should join. Many articles on skateboarding are currently stubs and are being vandalized frequently so we need people watching such pages. Also, many articles still don't exist and need to be created. Please provide suggestions here if you have ideas. Thanks. --Hdt83 Chat 01:58, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Standardized chapters for skateboarders

I believe we should come up with the list of sections each article should cover or at least create an appropriate infobox. When I edit articles about skateboarders on Slovene Wikipedia I add the list of sll the videos they had had parts in (skimfat.com) and the sponsorship histry (complete with dates when they got on and when they left). You can see an example here: sl:Mike Vallely --KoRnholio8 18:34, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

References

As far as my expirience goes, references for skateboarding are hard to find, but I manage a skate news site and come across some articles that could be used for referencing at least once per week. The problem is, I don't have the time to add them to exand articles, so I suggest we put a section on the project page "unused articles", where anyone could post links to them and then people would incorporate them into the articles.

I stumbled on an article about Stevie Williams today.--KoRnholio8 18:37, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Could we also use Epicly Later'd episodes as references?--KoRnholio8 07:10, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

I added the reference to the Stevie Williams article and removed the references tag but the page could still be improved. --Hdt83 Chat 05:07, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Sice there is little response (and therefore no objections), I will create a section called Unused references and put "my findings" there. Can anyone please tell me their opinion on using Epicly Later'd episodes as references?--KoRnholio8 08:36, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Jargon

Hi. I've been thinking about removing (or explaining) all the jargon from the pages for skateboard and skateboarding. I think these two pages would be the first to be read by someone wanting to learn about skating and so they should be written for newcomers rather than those who understand the trick names etc. This would also be in line with WP:MOSDEF

Any thoughts on this? Steve-g 14:25, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

WOW! Excellent work on the article. in a span of less than two days, its been rescued from AFD and has become a properly cited article with numerous references. Looks like a little more polishing and it can easily pass good article requirements. Thank you for your efforts! --Hdt83 Chat 08:11, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Skateboarding discussion from Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals

Description
Skateboarding is one of the most popular sports and considering this, it is surprising that most articles related to skateboarding are currently in bad shape. User:Liface had proposed a wikiproject for skateboarding a year ago but he is not that active here anymore. This project would cover all aspects of skateboarding from tricks to companies having to do with skateboards.

Hey people I waant to become an admin and I need people to support me, I'm a fellow skateboarder and I have made some contributions, some of which include (but are not limited to): Creation of Skateboarding sponsorship and additions to existing skateboarding related articles such as Flip tricks (skateboarding) and I intend on contributing to all other skateboard related article in due time. I also want to semi-protect our skateboarding pages from vandalism as I have viewed enough comments in the discussion/talk pages to believe that something must be done. I stand before you, ready to take on the role of a Skateboarding Administrator and will use my Administrative Powers to there fullest in the most responsible method possible. just click on this and add your support to the discussion section at the bottom of the page (not on the discussion/talk page). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Panyé El Skat-e-board-ér (talkcontribs) 18:15, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Shove-it

Please note that a "Pop" Shove-it must be included as an essential flip trick and that "Shove-its without the Pop" cannot be included at all - the reason being that "normal Shove-its" are seldom used in combinations/variations of "Flip tricks" and therefore have been removed. That having been said, I suggest that we create a Shove-its page where all information on shove-its can be viewed (instead of not having them at all). This page should include (but is not limited to): Shove-its, Pop Shove-its, Street Shove-its. And I am more than happy to support/assist the creation of such a page.

Shove-its Acclaimed For

I have just created the Shove-its article, but alas, I have just decided that it should be named Shove-it's. If you agree, then perhaps you could make the necessary adjustments (I don't know how to change/move articles to a different name).

Verifiable References, Sources and External Links

If people want References and Sources just quote one of the Category:Skateboarding video games, Category:Skateboarding magazines, Category:Skateboarding videos and/or Category:Skateboarding films found on wikipedia. If it's impractical due to technicalities then don't let them get away with it and revert back to a trick-tip-video such as: Tony Hawks Trick Tips Series and The First Step (claiming to be "the ultimate skateboarding trick tip series" - found at "the1ststep.com"). I know I only named two but I'm sure there's more out there. If all else fails try for a last resort at visiting youtube, I here they have unlimited videos on trick tips - WARNING don't waste your bandwidth on youtube, youtube is shitzzle...someone just came up with the idea of ripping everyone off and they have succeeded, join me in the march against youtube!

I think that we should add their stance, skateboard history (how long they have ridden a skateboard for), style, competitions entered, etc. to their articles and also make a page that catergorises them in some way.

GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! Skateboarding articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Skateboarding articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

The article Chris Pulman has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Long term orphan article for which I am unable to find a valid reference to remove the BLP tag

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:16, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Gravitis, Freebord, and Freeboard

Hey folks, I've been sucked into the articles at Gravitis, Freebord, and freeboard and I know absolutely nothing about them. Project revival

Howdy folks!

So in line with this guideline, I've contacted a few editors who are members of Wikiproject Skateboarding and (from their contributions) have been recently active on Wikipedia generally. Some have already responded which is great!

Given the state of various skateboarding-related articles, reviving this Wikiproject would seem to be a worthwhile endeavour. Having spend the last couple of days working on a few articles, my take on things could best be summarised thus:

1. Lots of skate company and individual skater (BLP) articles are full of "references" that are actually sales/product pages, web forums, press releases and things like Twitter, Facebook and Linkdin. None of these are really reliable sources. There are plenty of reliable sources for the skate "industry", though many magazines are not online and mainstream "sports news" sites (like ESPN) only cover skating peripherally.
2. Lots of skate-related articles suffer from serious WP:NOTHOWTO issues, especially the various skateboarding trick articles (for obvious reasons). Many of these seem to have been written by skaters, for skaters to "teach" new skaters how to do various things. This is a great idea but each of the articles in question needs to meet WP:GNG in their own right. There's plenty of coverage out there (off-line coverage is okay) - we just need to find it and add it to articles.
3. I've re-written a couple of articles over the last few days - specifically Skateboarding styles, Skateboarding sponsorship and International Association of Skateboard Companies. I also created DVS Shoes. I've discovered there's probably as much to do in the "re-writing" category as there is in the "new article creation" category. Feel free to add things to the new {{to do}} box on the Project page.
4. There's a serious need for some assessment and reassessment of related articles. There's a helpful box at the bottom of the Project page that shows how many related articles are in each importance/class categories. Feel free to assess and reassess as you see fit.

I'm keen to get the Project active again. Anyone who wants to help out is welcome to participate in any way they think will be helpful. It would be good to get some indication as to what other editors think is worth spending some time on. Cheers, Stalwart111 22:49, 6 December 2012 (UTC).

Oh, and just in case anyone happens to be interested, I've also suggested a re-design for the Project user-box. Please see Template talk:User SkateboardingWP. Cheers, Stalwart111 22:50, 6 December 2012 (UTC).

Flip tricks article

Hi all, I have just completed major reviews of the Flip tricks article: Flip tricks and the Nollie article: Nollie. They are not complete, and I have updated the tags appropriately, so it would be good if other more knowledgeable members could contribute.--Soulparadox (talk) 14:46, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Skate magazines

A bit of a shout-out to those who might have some old skateboarding magazines laying around. Skateboarding is obviously not well-covered in mainstream media. I very rarely see skateboarding covered on CNN, the BBC or FOX or in the New York Times. Skaters, tricks, parks and brands are regularly covered in skateboarding magazines but most of these are not online (if they were online, no-one would buy them off-line). As a result, some of our best sources / references are not available online and so citing them (and searching for them / through them) is made a lot more difficult.

So if anyone has old magazines they can trawl through for some good in-depth coverage of some major skateboarding-related articles, that would be great. I'll be going through the few I have to see what I can find. Cheers, Stalwart111 23:40, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

New skateboarder BLPs

Howdy,

Have just (in the last couple of days) written new articles for David González (Thrasher's Skateboarder OTY) and Tas Pappas (previously a one-line stub about an Australian skating icon).

The Pappas article was particularly difficult - given his history, there was a very real threat that serious BLP violations could be introduced. We'll have to watch this one very carefully. Ben Pappas now redirects there too.

Cheers all, Stalwart111 00:52, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Skateboarding At Wikimania 2014 (updated version)

Please note: This is an updated version of a previous post that I made.

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Chris Joslin Wiki

Chris Joslin skateboards for Plan B. I am looking to make a page for the newest pro on plan b Chris Joslin. He has been putting in a lot of work recently and has had a lot of coverage in 2015. I was planning on getting my information through interviews in magazines as well as videos. This wiki would have information about his life outside of skating included in it as well as information of his skateboarding career. I was also going to acquire information through his video parts as well as contests talking about him. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments about this? Measures

I think the required bolt lengths for standard skateboard and trucks should be mentioned somewhere on the Skateboard page. It's 7/8". So with a 1/8" riser pad you need 1" bolts. Longboards can be thicker, it's better to go for 1" and more. Best regards from Germany, --Dumbid (talk) 21:12, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Discussion at NSPORTS

Hello all. In an effort to finally resolve the never-ending and annoying GNG v SSG issue, I've proposed a revision of the NSPORTS introduction. You are all invited to take part in the discussion. Thank you. Jack | talk page 06:20, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

Could it be? A new infobox template? For us? -- YES.

Hello everyone, I'm new here. I have made an infobox for you guys to use on skateboarder's article pages, since I felt we were definitely overdue for one that is tailored to skateboarders' biography articles.

It's really easy to use if you're familiar with infoboxes. Here is an example of how it looks.

I am wondering what you guys think about it. Also, I am definitely open to suggestions and collaboration. If you're planning on making any major changes, please discuss them on this talk page or on the template's talk page first.--Jay D'Easy (talk) 00:27, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

List of pro skaters

I've just reopened a five-year-old unresolved discussion at Talk:List of pro skaters#Title revision. There seems to be a fair degree of consensus, so it may just need someone to be WP:BOLD. Narky Blert (talk) 11:35, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
