Name of a British honour for foreign civilians having helped British soldiers

Also asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#Name of a British honour for foreign civilians having helped British soldiers.

Hello,

I have seen in several French-language sources the mention of a Médaille de la reconnaissance britannique or anglaise (roughly translates as Medal of British recognition/gratitude/acknowledgment, nothing to do with scouting), awarded to foreign (esp. French and Belgian) civilians who risked their life while giving assistance to British soldiers isolated behind enemy lines.

This book (bottom of page and top of next page) gives the name of several WWI recipients, with circumstances leading to the award (I can translate abstracts if needed). Senator and Mayor of Poitiers fr:Jacques Masteau, according to his Senate website biography, was also "Médaillé de la Reconnaissance anglaise", although probably for WWII actions.

A picture of the medal is visible here, taken from a Belgian newspaper article stating that it was created by George V in 1922. It seems to be similar in purpose to the Medal of French Gratitude (French: "Médaille de la Reconnaissance française") created in 1917. This search returns the name of several other recipients.

I couldn't find which actual award this refers to. Any idea ? Place Clichy (talk) 15:33, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Answered here by Nthep : it is the Allied Subjects' Medal. Place Clichy (talk) 09:45, 22 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merging of Italian main pages?

Hello everyone. I recently stumbled into this project and wanted to contribute to Italian pages, yet, it seems that for a number of years now, there are two main articles, both describing orders and honours of Italy: Orders, decorations, and medals of Italy, which has the correct name but little content, and List of Italian orders of chivalry, which has great content but a non-harmonised name. A merge banner was put there a while ago but there seems to be no discussion nor watchers in both articles' talk pages, so this is why I write here. What do you think should be done? As it stands right now it is quite hard to know what to contribute to. Thank you for reading, ---roroke (talk) 10:59, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

After having seen that the merge banner has been placed in December 2017 and left uncontested since then, I decided to go ahead with the merger. The articled which has been merged was a featured list, though, and the destination a start-class article. Is there a chance it could be reassessed? Sorry, I don't really know how assessing works. ---roroke (talk) 05:44, 11 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Updated categories

There was evidently more to update than I first noticed when updating the name of this WikiProject in uniformity per WP:CONSISTENCY. Thanks to Fayenatic london for helping to carry it out! Chicbyaccident (talk) 10:34, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And as of today, the assessment stats are being updated by the bot – good. – Fayenatic London 22:24, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

George Cross Disambiguation

See Talk:Douglas Ford (GC)#Requested move 5 July 2018 and Talk:Walter Anderson (GC)#Requested move 11 July 2018. Should we disambiguate people only notable for winning certain high awards by those awards? This definitely affects Category:Recipients of the George Cross, Category:Recipients of the Victoria Cross and Category:Recipients of the Medal of Honor, all of which use this form of disambiguation. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:49, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Project Message board

Just a small observation of a newcomer in the project but over half of the main page of the project is filled by the message board. I personally find it pretty unappealing, both from visuals and actual functionality, as first impression of the project that you see when you scroll down (and down, and down, and even further down). Much of it is more like a years-old contributions or annoucement list and the parts where there is actual conversation is what could be discussed here on the talk page instead (and with a much smarter design and structure I might add). I´m not sure who is in charge of maintaining that page (@Fdutil:?) and of course it is a purely subjective point of view. But maybe it should be considered to either completely move that massage board from the main page into the talk page`s archive or to turn it into a trimmed and regularly updated kind of annoucement board. And as I´m on the talk's archive already, somehow the template above doesn´t show the pages and show a single redlink instead; apparently because medal is used both with and without capital letter within the page names. ...GELongstreet (talk) 19:40, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Another newcomer here, and I absolutely agree. It might be moved to a subpage. ---roroke (talk) 10:52, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Seems odd to me, too. Moreover, the inconsistent (and banned! ambiguous DD/MM/[YY]YY) date format. It's not exactly a talk page – any objection to my editing the dates for consistency? "DayNum MonthName Year" (i.e. 7 December 1941) seems most consistent with the topic area, which is largely military, though resulting in a ragged appearance unless turned into a table. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:13, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 Done See WT:WikiProject Orders, Decorations, and Medals/Archive 6#Message board archive. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 22:20, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. And suddenly the project page looks surprisingly like a project page. ...GELongstreet (talk) 22:26, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Post-nominals for honorary Officers/Members of the Order of the British Empire

I've noted that some pages about honorary Officers/Members of the Order of the British Empire have post-nominals (e.g. Gillian Anderson, Pierce Brosnan. Beppe Severgnini and so on). Is it correct to write Gillian Anderson, OBE, even if she is not a British subject?--Carnby (talk) 10:50, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Carnby, I just had an edit conflict raising the same point! MilborneOne (talk) 10:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good! ;-)--Carnby (talk) 10:55, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Carnby: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography § Formatting post-nominals says to append , OBE only in the lede and appropriate place in the Infobox. I don't see an exception related to country of citizenship. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:26, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's entirely correct to use the postnominal. But not a title such as "Sir" or "Dame", which is not used by honorary recipients. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:59, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

24 Aug 2008 There is a reference to the (British) Miltary Cross as a 'third-level' award. There is nowhere which seems to define what a first-, second-, third- ot other- level decoaration might be in each of the probably 300+ countries which make such miltary awards. Follow-up question - are there any countries without a military force OR who do not make military awards. Salisbury-99 (talk) 11:36, 24 August 2008 (UTC) About 25 or so years ago, some British writers began using ‘level’ to describe ‘rank’ or ‘degree’ of award subsets. Thus for operational gallantry awards for officers, the first ‘level’ was the VC, the second ‘level’ was the MC and the third ‘level’ was the MID. In the 1994 changes, officers and other ranks became eligible for all gallantry awards, the first ‘level’ was the VC, the second ‘level’ was the CGC, the MC was downgraded from second ‘level’ officer’s award to all ranks third ‘level’ and the MID was the fourth Level. There is no support for the use of the words ‘level’ or 'rank' or 'degree' in either the individual warrants for these awards or in the Order of Wear. It may have value in describing a subset but the Wikipedia chart for British ODMs lists the BEM as ‘level’ 3B. Since GBE, KBE and DBE, CBE, OBE, MBE are higher than the BEM I would have thought the BEM was sixth level. Anthony Staunton (talk) 14:55, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • These "levels" only apply to gallantry decorations. When it was awarded for non-combat gallantry, the BEM counted as a third-level decoration (after the GC and GM), as did the CBE, OBE and MBE (since which one you got was determined by your rank alone and not by the level of gallantry involved). All were later replaced by the QGM. Also, the MC was never a second-level decoration, since in practice (before the introduction of the CGC) the DSO could be awarded for gallantry (and frequently was, despite received wisdom to the contrary). -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:37, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • My answer was that it was a recent innovation not supported by either warrants or the Order of Wear. Saying it only applies to gallantry decorations eliminates the DSO which was for distinguished leadership in action to senior commanders. It is not a gallantry award although 20% of DSOs were awarded to junior officers for gallantry. Putting the DSO and MC as separate and distinct levels suggest a precision that never existed. Anthony Staunton (talk) 15:42, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • I quite agree it's not supported by anything official. However, it is certainly not true that the DSO was not in practice used as a gallantry award, as you say yourself. It was quite clearly used as the officers' equivalent of the DCM/CGM, therefore putting its award for gallantry at a level between the VC and the DSC/MC/DFC. -- Necrothesp (talk) 16:05, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
        • The DSO is a prime example of why there is no consensus on levels. I respect the view of those who equate the DSO for officers with the DCM/CGM for other ranks but that it is not my view. We do agree in answer to the original question that ‘it's not supported by anything official’. Anthony Staunton (talk) 01:05, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

31 Mar 2010 My initial project to update Awards and decorations of the Russian Federation quickly got a bit our of hand with nearly 500 items being listed with pictures and institution dates (decrees or orders) and award prerequisites. Info was pouring in and I decided to limit this site to state awards only. All awards of the various ministries and departments are slowly being moved to their own pages. I have already moved the following to their own individual pages Awards and Emblems of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (incredible number of awards will require months to complete), Awards of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (still much missing data) and Awards of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia (99% complete). I will keep you updated on future changes. Fdutil (talk) 15:14, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
4 Jun 2010 Awards and decorations of the British military - Similar format and layout to the USA page. Done - see Military awards and decorations of the United Kingdom. Still some work required to obtain ribbon images and create pages for linked medals. I originally set it up based on the US layout, per the original request, but I don't like this layout as it makes it difficult to do update edits. I am going to change it to vertical in line and add some columns to allow for establishment date and eligibility period (currently this info is wrapping around which is untidy). Done (05/06/10) AusTerrapin (talk) 00:49, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
4 Jun 2010 I am proposing a modification to the project banner to provide for page categorisation similar to other project banners. See talk page for more details. AusTerrapin (talk) 01:04, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

21 Dec 2016 Queen's Gallantry Medal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Queen%27s_Gallantry_Medal The last line of this entry 'Former decorations of Australia' seems irrelevant to this entry. It opens up to 'Australian Honours Order of Precedence prior to 6 October 1992'. They are not former decorations of Australia but Imperial (British) orders and decoration in which Australia was a full participant until 5 October 1992. Many of the orders and decorations are still listed in the Australian Order of Wear although if awarded after 5 October 1992 they will be treated as foreign awards. Australia like Britain has an Order of Wear not an Order of Precedence. There is a category 'civil bravery decorations' which is a made up category which would be better named 'Bravery awards' or 'Imperial (British) bravery awards' since it includes the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct which is not a decoration. You would think that the Queen's Gallantry Medal should be in this list since no less than 40 were awarded as a result of Australian Government or Australian State Government recommendations but it does include the four Albert Medals, Gold and Bronze, sea and land and the Edward Medal which were all abolished in 1971. After the New Year I will delete 'Former decorations of Australia' but would appreciate any comments in the meantime. Anthony Staunton (talk) 13:19, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Once again, multiple article titles of Russian Federation ODMs were incorrectly changed to Russia (vice Russian Federation). These are multiple repeat change to multiple articles without consensus. The award criteria (establishment orders) appearing in all Russian Federation ODM articles are translated verbatim from the original documents from the Kremlin and the Russian Gazette, ALL cite Russian Federation, NOT Russia. This is a childish political statement akin calling the Soviet Union Russia or Soviets Russians. What happened to discussion and consensus on Wiki? I would also like to point out these changes were made by someone able to do so without leaving traces to the general editorial membership. By some incredible coincidence, a very short period of time after questioning a Wiki editor on why he had done such a thing to the main article on state awards of the Russian Federation. Please sort it out among yourselves, people with such access rights. Multi year researchers/contributors should not have to lower themselves to this unnecessary childish behaviour. • There has been an award of the UK DSC to the French town of Dunkirk for service in the Great War. This is mentioned in a few links such as http://en.ww2awards.com/award/3 This is corroborated by the appearance of the decoration in Dunkirk's full coat of arms. There is also an old newspaper article online about the award, which I cannot seem to find now. Would this qualify as a "collective" award? If so, should it be included as such in the DSC page?
25 May 2017 Baronetcies conferred upon British expatriates and non-British nationals
I posed two questions at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Baronet Is this a list of Baronetcies recommended by British colonies and dominions? If so the heading should be amended. Since all have the title 'Sir' it assumes all are British subjects. Since all are British subjects how can any be British expatriates or non-British nationals? Form of language

Referring to 1924 Prime Minister's Resignation Honours, but I'm told it is widespread, there is a form of words on that page: "The King has been pleased to direct the following be sworn of His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council:"

That seems to me to be archaic and unencyclopedic, and inconsistent with the other categories of awards, where doubtless the king was also completely effing delighted to creat barons, knights, etc, but we do not say so. The language is fine for a formal publication such as the London Gazette in 1924 or today. It just does not work in 2018 on wikipedia, where the expectation is that we'll provide a list without anachronistic rhetorical flourishes. Could we agree to dispense with it, please; or else explain why we choose to employ it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:31, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Southern Cross of Honor

Why is this listed as part of this on its talk page, it is not a recognized national (or even local government) award, but rather one awared privately (and with out any official recognition).Slatersteven (talk) 18:36, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Need help organizing official and unofficial Confederate decorations.

Medal Awards Authorized Presented Established
Confederate Medal of Honor >50 SCV SCV 1977
Confederate Roll of Honor 2,104 CSA CSA 1863
Davis Guard Medal 50 CSA Texas 1864
Southern Cross of Honor 78,761 UDC UDC 1899
New Market Cross of Honor 294 Virginia VMI 1904

Each article included in this table has a copy of the table in the article, set aside in a section titled "Other CSA honors". Its purpose is apparently to provide an overview of the various honors that have been bestowed on veterans of the American Civil War who fought for the Confederate States of America.

There are two problems that I see.

  1. In the Wikipedia scheme of things, this doesn't seem to fill any ordinary function. It has more information than a navigation template. I can't find anything similar in other similar articles. If it were in prose it would need to be sourced, it would tend to grow, and it might seem off-topic.
  2. Two of these awards were officially authorized by government officials, while the other three have been created by private organizations. Three were given to posthumously or to living persons, one was only given to those living, and one is strictly posthumous. Four of them are physical medals, while one is a roster. So they are different kinds of awards in several respects.

Some editors object to calling these "CSA Honors" since most of them have not been given by the CSA. See the discussion at Talk:Confederate Medal of Honor (Sons of Confederate Veterans)#‎CSA honours. What's the best way to handle this material? Should we just delete it? Mobi Ditch (talk) 04:03, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How about this instead, at the bottom of the page? Mobi Ditch (talk) 04:24, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This obituary notice says that Wiswessser received "Department of the Army Award of Merit - the highest U.S. Army honor that can be awarded to a civilian". Is that an earlier name for Department of the Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service? If so, could you please add that to the article and make a redirect? If not ... could you shed any light on Wiswesser's award? For the moment I've boldly piped the one to the other in William Wiswesser. Thanks. (I've also enquired at Talk:Department of the Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service). PamD 09:45, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly is this category tree supposed to contain? Is it (a) all orders that have ever been awarded to heads of state etc., or (b) only those orders that are exclusively granted to heads of state etc.? Could someone please add a description to the category page? I seem to recall that there has been past confusion in some CfD discussions. --Paul_012 (talk) 23:54, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I assume the latter, as the former could probably include pretty much every order ever created. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:58, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have been going through nobility articles removing deprecated sources such as royalark.net and have noticed the Honors and Awards sections are absolutely rife with terrible references. I have yet to come across one of these sections that doesn't contain citations to:

  1. A stand-alone image: pinterest, hostingpics.net, Getty, pinimg, Wikipedia Commons, zimbio, photobucket, farm2.staticflickr.com, flickr
    1. In these citations, editors are personally identifying (or taking the word of forums/blog contributors) insignias etc. being worn by the noble in question and using this as evidence that person received said honor, despite no such information being available in the actual source. This is clearly OR.
  2. Royalty forums: Foros Realeza, Royal Jewels of the World Message Board, The Royal Forums, Danish Royal Watchers, forums.thefashionspot.com,
  3. Blogs: tengkusyah.blogspot.be, Royal Ark, Noblesse et Royautés,
  4. Images hosted on blogs: blogspot, The Royal Forums, royalwatcher.tumblr.com

Diffs: Queen Anne of Romania; Albert II of Belgium; Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark; Muhammad V of Kelantan; sash; Farah Pahlavi

Many of the pages with these issues are BLPs, so using any self-published source is forbidden! Please, when you see this crap--especially on BLPs--remove it! JoelleJay (talk) 19:30, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reiterating this! It is indeed widespread with medals. RevelationDirect (talk) 16:32, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
