Follow up on Point number 2.1.14 - BLP photographs

Previously was in touch with a Photographer of the daily Theekkathir . Asked him to contribute his photos to wiki commons .But he did some mass uploads which had some copyrighted images and also multiple camera issues .And it was subjected to mass deletion . After the ICC 2014 I met him again . This time around I am sitting with him and sorting out proper photos confirming that they were taken by him , renaming them and guiding him towards uploading them to commons . Can some one with experience guide me in this process on cautions to be taken? . Note : We would get more than 200 Photos of living politicians who have wiki articles . --Commons sibi (talk) 17:06, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • That is an excellent news. I may try to help if you want. Regards. --TitoDutta 14:33, 3 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • A great initiative Commons sibi! Let know if I could help in any way. Best wishes.--Vishnu (talk) 15:27, 3 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly, help is available. If you just need answers to specific questions, ask (or search) the Commons Help Desk. If you want help specifically from Indian Commonists, post on the India mailing list. I am happy to try to help as well, though I'm not too active on Commons (in my volunteer account). Thank you Dutta , Vishnu and Asaf (WMF) . My specific point is related to whether an OTRS needs to be logged explaining the procedure to wikimedians in the commons . The photographer has indeed used 4 cameras during his shootings . Have to explain it to them . --Commons sibi (talk) 11:02, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi, thanks for your question. Using 4 cameras is not an issue. If they have taken (/captured) those photographs, they may go ahead and upload those themselves. If someone else other than the photographer/copyright owner (example: you) uploads photographs, the person should send a permission-letter to OTRS team (I'll tell you about the process in details if needed). If your friend has not taken the photograph himself OR he is not the copyright owner (for example, collected from friend, relative etc.), the same OTRS-process needs to be followed. Let me know I need to further clarify it. Regards. --TitoDutta 11:31, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[Important] ICC 2014 follow-up and few other things

On 18 December 2014, during Swatantra 2014 event, at 10:40 pm, we met at the ground floor's lobby of Classic Avenue for a get-together/unofficial meeting.

The following people attended the unofficial meeting. denotes the person attended both ICC 2014 and Swatantra 2014 (this marking might be incomplete, help to fix).

Issues

There we discussed our works and performance on the proposed roadmap and the following issues/things were observed—

  1. Not too many works have started: Although one-two works have started, most of the works proposed in the roadmap are yet to be started.
  2. Missing or broken systematic communication channel and central noticeboard: a) A systematic communication channel and b) a central noticeboard are either missing or broken. In the (Swatantra 2014) meeting someone asked about restarting WikiPatrika (point 3.1.13 in the roadmap). The question received nothing but blank faces. This is happening every now and then. We En WP community members don't know what Te Wikipedia/Wikisource community members are doing. Urdu Wikipedia might have done some works on the roadmap, but the news has not clearly reached our this En WP desk still.
So there are two problems here: 1) (there are many Facebook groups, pages, profiles, mailing lists, Twitter accounts where things are discussed sometimes, but) there is not any central noticeboard or something like that where all members can go and tell about (/report) their works or (more importantly) ask progress related to any "Roadmap" task 2) we do not know how to communicate to each other. This channel needs to be improved. Plus sometimes it takes a long time to get a reply.

Proposals

18 December

The following suggestions were proposed on 18 Dec—

  1. This WP:RMI will be the central location to track and follow at least our ICC 2014 related works for now.
  2. There will be 1 or 2 chief and 2 or 3 associate conveners/page managers/communication managers here (preferably the associate conveners will be from other communities) who'll communicate with different communities (and those communities will contact these members too) and keep on updating the central database. Vishnu Vardhan proposed my name as a convenor, Netha Hussain and Psubhashish also showed interest to work here. Personally I feel if Manoj (Malayalam Wiki), Ravi-ji (WMIN), Vishnu-ji (CIS) help us, it'll be fantastic. Please write below in the "discussion" section if you think you can help us.

New proposal

This was not discussed during the meeting, but I am adding now.

  • Either WMF or WMIN please send me the list of attendees of ICC 2014, I'll create a /Participants here and will create a database like this.
Username Home-Wiki Current status Preferred communication channels
User:Titodutta En WP Active En WP talk page, Special:EmailUser/Titodutta, Facebook or Google chats are also fine for not very serious issues
User:Example Te WP Active Te WP talk page, not on Facebook

That's all for now.
Please write your comments in the "discussion" section below. --TitoDutta 10:53, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

  • I am interested in reporting news from Malayalam Wikimedia community. -- Netha (talk) 17:49, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks Ma'am. I'll note it. --TitoDutta 17:53, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The WikimediaIndia mailing list is already one such central noticeboard which is actively pushed to people (e-mail) rather than passively noticed (wiki pages, even via watchlists). It is however not generally or consistently used for project announcements, status updates, and requests for help. It seems very few people initiate threads on it. This can change! Asaf (WMF) (talk) 03:03, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • A proactive approach to gathering these news, as was done by the former WikiPatrika team, and as Tito seems willing to help with, is likely to yield better results. If communities are regularly asked about news and goings-on (not just active projects or successes, but also needs and challenges), the results can be a very good basis for all actors, including WMF, to engage with. Asaf (WMF) (talk) 03:03, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The ICC participants are listed here. Asaf (WMF) (talk) 03:03, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello and thanks for your replies and suggestions. The WikimediaIndia mailing list is already one such central noticeboard. . . That is a good point, On-Wiki documentation may have few advantages (ease to find, access and share, CC SA 3.0 licence of content, project-specific documentation, discussion and their categorization, much better collaborative editing option etc.) . . .was done by the former WikiPatrika team. . . — WikiPatrika should be restarted. Point 3.1.13 of our roadmap. . . .as Tito seems willing to help with. . . okay, it will be directly related to my works here, I am game. If communities are regularly asked about news and goings-on. . . sorry, but who'll ask? And, so many language groups, projects etc — it'll be very difficult to ask everyone regularly. If any single place is selected and popularized, everyone may come there. Of course we can contact communities regularly too if we have a strong team. Regards. --TitoDutta 05:18, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for starting this discussion. I am interested in overall coordination :-) AbhiSuryawanshi (talk) 11:26, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Shifting to Meta

  • Can we please shift discussion to Meta? Hosting it on enwp gives the impression that it is English-centric. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:40, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll oppose complete shifting/moving. Some of these topics are related to our En Wp, and these need to be discussed here. Initially I proposed to create it on Meta, unfortunately that has not been done still. --Tito Dutta (talk) 09:44, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

1 year passes by

Almost 1 year has passed by since the proposed roadmap was established . Is it possible that some one from WMF / WMIN /CIS /community help in explaining how we have progressed so far . Has preparing the roadmap helped us in converting plans to actions or is it yet another futile attempt whose intentions were good but the outcomes were not on expected lines .
