Help needed: American lobster

I have been gradually improving our article on the American lobster, and I've finished most of what I can do. The main outstanding task is to provide references for the fisheries section (or rewrite it with references). Can anyone here help? I am the Wikipedia Outreach Ambassador to ARKive, who have kindly agreed to donate an initial 200 article texts about endangered species from their project, to Wikipedia, under a CC-BY-SA license. Template that needs some work

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Fishing_location_topics - is anyone interested in separating USA states from other places? - surely there are other locations that could help create fishing location into separate continent or ocean/sea templates - with Australia as a part of a group of US states is really odd - either there is not much fishing article work being done anymore - or something is wrong... Waal... that was a template I wrote some years ago when I was trying to sort out the fishing articles. My expectation was that, over time, more articles about recreational fishing specific to different localities would appear. That hasn't happened so far, though I still expect it will, given enough time. They are obvious articles waiting to be written. So really its just a template which hasn't come into its own yet. I don't think it matters what happens to it at this stage. Australia could be removed, and it could be renamed something like "Recreational fishing in the United States. Or it could just be deleted. But I don't see much point in making either of those moves right now. It's not doing much harm, and it might prompt someone to write articles for it. Eventually enough articles will be written to clothe it more respectably, and it can be rationalised then. If it is to be kept, it should probably be rewritten as a footer template, not a side template. --Epipelagic (talk) 08:23, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Fishing vs fishing industry articles

Category:Fishing by country contains a mix of fishing and fishing industry articles. In the long term there should be articles that will fit Category:Fishing by country and a Category:Fishing industry by country. Meanwhile, the current set of articles should be checked to see it they are correctly titled as "Fishing in [Country]" or "Fishing industry in [Country]". -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 02:05, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Rainbow trout nominated for GA

I've been upgrading the Rainbow trout article for the last couple of weeks. Essentially it was very unbalanced with too much emphasis on steelhead, instead on the type species Oncorhynchus mykiss and associated subspecies. The Rainbow trout is a complex topic and I trust I've made sufficient changes to warrant Good Article status. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. Forceful editorial promotion of the euphemistic term "harvesting"

Several editors, particularly Elmidae (see his talk page), stubbornly insist on using the euphemistic term "harvesting" with regard to the Atlantic goliath grouper, keep deleting the more neutral term "fishing", disregard both linguistic and zoological arguments against "harvesting," and fail to offer any specific arguments against "fishing." Note that I supported my arguments with accurate source references (including publication data, page numbers, and links), whereupon Elmidae merely made a vague and unspecific claim that he could support his position by numerous publications if he wanted to do so, but he never cited any specific source.114.206.49.189 (talk) 16:40, 9 May 2020 (UTC) If linguistic analysis is used, the term "harvesting" can be clearly identified as an euphemism, rather than a scientific term, if the referred species is the Atlantic goliath grouper. See the following linguistic definition of negative euphemism: "Negative euphemisms deflate and diminish. They replace language that people prefer to avoid using. Examples include harvesting in place of killing, collateral damage instead of civilian casualties or deaths, relationship for sexual relationship, and intestinal fortitude in place of guts," in https://www.writingenglish.com/euphemism.htm . In Robert W. Holder's "Oxford Dictionary of Euphemisms" (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2008), the verb "harvest" is described as a mainly American euphemism and defined as "to kill for personal gratification." (p. 209). The use of negative euphemisms, particularly if these are less common in British or Australian English than in U.S. English, is at variance with Wikipedia's principle of neutrality. By this logic, one could similarly use the euphemistic term "sweat" (Schweiss) for the blood of a wounded game animal, as this term is commonly used in German hunting language ( http://wiredtohunt.com/2012/08/09/bowhunting-whitetails-the-eberhart-way-killing-deer-not-harvesting/ ). But since Wikipedia does refrain from calling blood "sweat," the term "fishing" should be similarly preferred over "harvesting" as far as it is used for the Atlantic goliath grouper, a species that was never kept in fish farms. See Wikipedia's own definition of euphemism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphemism . It clearly states that the purpose of this practice is avoidance, mitigation, understatement, substitution, metaphoric expression, circumlocution, etc., none of which is compatible with the principles of a Wikipedia entry. If one wants to argue in favor of "harvesting," one either needs to prove that a preference for euphemistic terms ('harvesting") over factual ones ("fishing") is compatible with Wikipedia's principles, or one needs to disprove that "harvesting" is an euphemistic term if applied to a wild population, or one needs to prove that the "Oxford Dictionary of Euphemisms" represents a minority and personal opinion in defining which words are euphemistic and which aren't. Wikipedia's own definition of "harvest" mentions the application of the term to fishing and hunting only with regard to Canada, whereas its glossary of fishing terms clearly specifies that the term "harvest" refers to a specific element of fishing: "the number or weight of fish caught and retained from a given area over a given period of time. Note that landings, catch, and harvest are different." As such, this is not a valid argument to dismiss the generic term "fishing" in favor of a euphemistic term whose use is geographically and semantically more limited than that of "fishing."114.206.49.189 (talk) 16:44, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

I think the issue here is that you are conflating two different definitions for harvest. The verb "harvest" is not being used in the sense of harvesting a crop, but in the sense of catching animals. @114.206.49.189: Correct me if I'm wrong, but your issue seems to be that "harvest" implies that the fish are being caught for resources, but they are actually being caught for sport. There are two issues with this. The first is that the second definition above (Merriam-Webster, American English) includes catching for sport in the definition of "harvest". The second is that I'm not sure the assertion that these fish are being caught for sport is accurate, you'd need a reliable source for that. (If you are not claiming they are being caught for sport, but just that they were never farmed, I fail to see why the term harvest is not applicable — for example, one might say "hunter-gatherers harvest wild plants, fish, and game".) userdude 20:05, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

If I may interpret. The user thinks that "harvest" is a euphemism chosen to disguise the fact that fish are killed - see this edit and a string of similar ones. Over a series of reverts they have since backpedalled from pushing gems like this one to putting up a rearguard action against the specific term "harvest", and chosen to hang the entire thing on the hook that goliath grouper were never farmed - which, as you are aware, is entirely beside the point, but as long as one can lawyer about it, hey great. - Argh, I shouldn't comment here anymore, I'm just getting worked up. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 20:19, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

It can be very easily proven that "harvesting" is an euphemistic term, rather than a neutral one. Since Elmidae claims expertise in ornithological matters, he may be kind to explain if it would be appropriate to use the verb "harvest" to the massive hunting of songbirds in France, Italy, and some other Mediterranean countries. Note the following similarities with the Atlantic goliath grouper: the affected species were regularly used for human consumption but they were never bred or kept in farms for this purpose, and they were hunted/fished also for purposes of sport. If Elmidae is of the opinion that it would be inappropriate to use the term "harvesting" for the killing of songbirds, he should explain why it would be more appropriate to use it for the Atlantic goliath grouper and why it should be preferred over the term "fishing"; otherwise, his preference for it is merely an arbitrary and subjective one.114.206.49.189 (talk) 04:46, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

"Fishing television series"

The article Fishing television series (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) states that "fishing television series" are TV shows about sport and recreational fishing, while Category:Fishing television series contains many TV shows about commercial fishing, as does {{Fishing television}} (since 2009, when TV shows were added [1]); There's a discrepancy here. Is "Fishing television series" just about sport and recreational fishing, or does it also include commercial fishing.
