Rite

Should "rite" be included in the first sentence? Newark (for example) says they are a Latin Rite church. Student7 15:53, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As most dioceses are in latin rite I would only mention it if it's not latin, but always put into the infobox. andy 16:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geotagging

What coordinate should be used for a diocese? It's the same problem as for other extended entities to find a single coordinate for an area. As I worked a lot on the administrative entities of Thailand I use the location of the administration office there, but what to use for a diocese? The cathedral maybe as the "central" place of worship? Having articles on a geographic entity with a coordinate to find it in e.g. Google Earth is very useful, and as GE includes Wikipedia articles in their display it also gives our articles some advertisement. andy 16:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This could be rather straightforward. The coordinate should be that of the cathedral church. ClaudeMuncey 22:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some suggestions

A great start and is much needed. Some ideas for discussion.

  1. Regarging the article title Roman Catholics diocese to be title Diocese of or Roman Catholic? See Talk:List_of_Roman_Catholic_dioceses#Proposal_for_generalised_guideline_on_naming_dioceses
  2. For the infobox, should established of diocese, coadjutor (arch)bishop, and auxiliary bishops to be inculded? These are from the other template Template:Infobox Roman Catholic diocese
  3. What is {{coor title dms|...}} - Coordinates of the diocese?

Finally again about time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ant ie (talkcontribs)

"My" infobox already includes the auxiliary bishops of there are any, and it wouldn't hurt to add a coadjutor or even the apostolic administrator for vacant dioceses. For the coordinates go one section above :-) andy 16:05, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Should we repace your infobox with the one on WikiProject Catholicism main page.ant_ie 20:18, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer a real merge of the two, so we finally have really only one. As there are other churches (e.g. anglican) which have dioceses as well, but that infobox is rather specific to the structure of catholic dioceses (is it? I have no idea about what a diocese infobox for an anglican diocese should/can contain, whether they can share one or better use a separate one), the Template:Infobox Roman Catholic diocese is the somewhat better name for "our" infobox. When I created it I was simply ignorant that there are more than just catholic dioceses. I have just pointed Gerald Farinas (talk · contribs) to this discussion here, hopefully he will join in. andy 17:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you look as the article titles for dioceses that are in England and Wales, they are all titled "Diocese of ...", except for those where an Anglican diocese exists with the same name. I would suggest that the title for an article about a diocese should use the same name the diocese uses to identify itself, with the possible exception of those having another religious group using that same name. See for example, Archdiocese of Liverpool, but Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth.--SynKobiety 01:33, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template for this sub-project?

What about a template for this sub-project on diocese's talk pages so editors can refer back to here? ant_ie 09:26, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea.Student7 11:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My main weakness is creating templates, so I would like some help. ant_ie 20:15, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well then, you will just weep for joy when you see this page!  :) After recovering from being overwhelmed try to get ahold of yourself in order to leave plaudits below!  :) Student7 00:31, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You. Thank You. Just the 2 links in the box will need to be fix before we begin using it. Thank you. ant_ie 15:40, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fix the links as best I could. ant_ie 18:31, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Archdioceses?

Are archdioceses covered as well? Except for being larger and being the seat of the Metropolitan, they aren't much different. But some of the introductory material should sound different. Student7 11:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, this outline should work for dioceses, archdioceses, apostolic vicariates and prefectures or even mission sui iures. And it should not be limited to the Roman Catholic, also those other churches which are under the Pope (e.g. the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church) should work with it - and maybe also protestant or anglican dioceses, but I don't know much about those. Of course the introductory sentence and the parameters for the infobox vary, but not that much. Feel free to add alternative introductions for these other diocese-like entities. Only the confusing thing - should the article on the archdiocese also include the things about the ecclesiastic province, which is heads? andy 11:26, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My thought is that it must currently include ecclesiastical province info while making it clear that is not the archdiocese. In a couple of years, the province should be broken out into a separate article with it's own history, etc. Right now, I think we all have so much on our plate, that it's too much to ask to break it out as a separate article today, which would be much more accurate.Student7 14:09, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Catalog of this article?

Shouldn't this article/Project be catalogued for easier reference? Student7 21:08, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes as its difficult to find at present, ant_ie 21:15, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

(Discussion about the diocesan infobox seems to have been suspended during the transition). I don't care for the latin name of the diocese. It sounds clunky in English. Like pig Latin or something. I would like to see it dropped, not only as a requirement but not even allow it! Student7 13:08, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Latin name is the offical name for Roman Catholic Dioceses use by the Holy See. For that reason it should remain.ant_ie 15:59, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seconded for exactly the same reason. andy 16:06, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
