Who appointed the mediators

Who appointed the mediators? WP has an old and bad traditional in which a handful of editors have made policies and guidelines in a handful of days? E.g. much of WP:MOS. --Philcha (talk) 22:40, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jimbo did. The Mediation Committee is accepted today, I suspect, because it does not presume to enjoy a perpetual place in the Wikipedia dispute resolution hierarchy, but instead recognises that it will exist only as long as it continues to help the community. We are self-selecting only because our advantage over informal mediation is that the Committee's members, who mediate all of our cases, have an established ability to mediate competently. That is to say (without intending to downplay at all the invaluable role that the MedCab plays): we are not a "free-for-all", in that anybody cannot just mediate our cases; they have to have a solid track record in successfully mediating. Why do the mediators not want to discuss mediation policy with 'ordinary editors'?

I have asked some important questions about mediation policy on the policy talk page. Some mediators have shown interest but many have not joined in the discussion despite a personal request to do so. Off-wiki mediation

Thanks for your note. The draft policy update is in its first phase, and not all the sections that will be in the final draft have been written. Also, some sections that are currently included will not be present in later drafts. The off-wiki/confidential mediation provision will be included in the final draft, and we do not plan to substantially alter the corresponding section of the current draft - nor alter the content that was written in as a result of our discussion some months ago.
