Uses
A burr hole is a procedure typically performed to treat a epidural hematoma.

Equipment
The first step is to gather the needed equipment.


Review imaging
Review the CT scan, verify the side to be operated on, and measure the thickness of the skull.

Landmark
Often this is 2 centimeters in front of and 2 centimeters above the ear cannel. Though other locations make be used. Remove the hair in this area.


Freezing
Inject freezing (lidocaine with epinephrine) into to area to decrease bleeding.

Cut
Make an about 4 centimeter long cut with a scalpel down to the bone.

Retractors
Use retractors to expose the bone.

Drill
Use the drill to make a hole through the skull down to the blood.


Epidural
Blood can be removed with irrigation.
